They are just like the ones sold in discount stores. Even Daiso will have luggage padlocks. They serve only as visual deterrents and will not safeguard your bag., so don't spend too much on them.

Most soft type luggage bags can be slashed open with a sharp object by simply splitting the bag open at the zipper. Even the hard ones can still be opened, it just takes more skill and time to do so.

For anything valuable — laptops, phones, money, jewellery, put these into your carry on! and not in your luggage bag.

Use black colored cable ties instead, they are a cheap way of securing your luggage bag. Again, it's mostly a visual deterrent but at least you won't have any tiny keys that easily goes missing when you travel.

Grab a TSA approved lock, that way if you travel through the USA, you wont end up with a Cut Open bag 'In the name of National Security!'

BTW I dont think travel insurance cover that as a deliberate act.

    • I never had a problem with normal locks - the TSA dudes just pre-screened my bags while I was around. Of course you might occasionally get a prick who will just do it to spite you.

Edit: But then again I can determine the TSA lock combination code by probing the lock with a piece of paper.

  • useless.
