Jetstar "cabin bag crackdown"

Interesting..

The days of passengers bending Jetstar's carry-on baggage rules are about to come to an end with the airline cracking down on customers taking bags that are too large on board planes.

A Jetstar spokesperson has confirmed the airline will introduce cabin baggage officers to crack down on passengers who try sneak on oversized or heavy carry-on luggage on board, instead of paying extra fees to check-in them in.

The officers will enforced the airline's carry-on size and weight limits at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and the Gold Coast airports on a trial basis.

Currently, Jetstar passengers without a checked bag can check-in online or at an airport kiosk. The boarding area is usually the first place they interact with a Jetstar staff member.

The airline will have officers positioned at some airport gates to ensure all passengers do not breach the maximum allowable size and weight limits for carry-on baggage. Passengers deemed to be taking on baggage that is too large and/or too heavy will likely face a higher baggage fee than what they would have paid at the time of booking.

All Airlines should crack down on Cabin Baggage. Especially on obviously oversize/overweight. As long as they are a little flexible by an inch or 2, and by say half a kilo, then 99% will benefit and will be happier about the crack down.

The rules are the rules. When I went to Thailand last year I flew on Virgin, Scoot, Air Asia, Jetstar and Qantas. I was going with just carry on and made sure I had a bag with a size and weight that met the requirements of all airlines (the crappiest was Virgin). With a little bit of brain power and the ability to prepare 10 minutes before your leaving their airport it's not that hard to do.

As a rule I always travel with a portable luggage scale. That way I know my luggage is always under weight.

I agree, and I always carry scales too. But efficiously applying the rules could make a shambles of boarding. But the rules should certainly be enforced to some degree.

        • That would be "officiously", I presume…

Damn my NZ eccent! Yes 'Officiously' would be efficacious :))

    wearable luggage… http://www.jaktogo.com/

    • +3

Can you imagine using these haha and going through customs

      • just take your jacket/bag off.

        • +3

But what if I'm not wearing anything underneath?

    • +2

That is one hilarious product lol.

      On the website:

      Clever people buy a Jaktogo

Sane people never, ever, wear Jaktogo.

    • SCOTTeVEST looks more wearable.

      • But seems to have customer service issues related to quality if you look at a number of posts in the link (and the head of the company seems to be rather nasty, if one of the posts is to be believed)

Also the shipping costs to Australia seem to be extortionate - between US$50 to US$70 for the cheapest available prices to ship a single jacket to various city addresses in Australia that I tried.

    • I would be dead if I invested in this product. The experience is usually hot and uncomfortable as it is.

    • Is there an Ozbargain deal on that? Actually strike that with my last name they'll probably assume I'm up to no good, shoot first and ask questions later.

  • I agree on this policy. I went on a Jetstar flight from MEL to SYD and was delayed for 30 min as there were too many bags in the overhead compartment.

  • About TIME !

On my last JQ flight (year ago) I saw these cool of Asians get onto a flight with these very large carry on bag (probably fit a 200kg man in it). Good, start cracking down on the rorters' and make them pay x2 the normal overweight fees.

  • Anyone flown Sprit Airlines in the US?

Boy are they tight on what you take on!

  • +1

Good. Nothing worse than some bozzo trying to squish a wheeled on minivan into the overhead locker. And then trying to get the damn thing out again at the other end.

    • +1

…and they're sually the first out of their seat after touch down, collapsing into others as plane turns corner into terminal gooseneck

      • +1

Ah yes, the distinctive sound of the click of the seat-belt as soon as the wheels are on the ground.

  • Job well done. Those folks bringing all the heavy stuffs on-board to avoid paying extra $ actually cause all the delays that I've seen. :/

They should also crack down on fat people. ie 50% of the Aus population. I support a combined weight policy. Fatsos neg away lol

  • What abut my Krispy Kreme doughuts? I guess they don't count towards the luggage allowance.

    • The money goes to America, so there will be no problem with them.

    • +2

Wear them, one on each finger = no probs!!

  • +2

why does fat people get to bring extra kilos?

  • About time, should be able to get my bags onboard without being squashed into the overhead

  • This is a good thing. I can't stand it when people bring a massive bag that takes up the entire locker and then me with a normal sized bag has to put it at my feet when at 6"3 I already struggle to fit in the seats -.-

The only issue is I wish all the airlines would come up with a universal "maximum accepted size of carry on baggage" so that the baggage makers can all adhere to one size.

Most people would only have one decent carry on bag that they take on both domestic and international flights, and it is a pain in the ass that it is ok on one carrier but not ok on the next.

  • I've seen many huge backpacks jammed into lockers then they leave the straps hanging out for the FA's to fold in, some bods are just so dam lazy.

I've heard that Jetstar check-in staff get a cut of the excess baggage fees they charge to customers, so I would have thought they would already be fairly strict with weights back at check-in.

  • mrs altomic is on a flight back from sydney on sunday. only carry on bag. i measured the bag and its 2 cms wider than their guide. but only weighs 7kgs. let's see what happens.

    • I'm interested in this, too. My flight is next Thursday and my bag is 1 cm wider (handle) and 1 cm longer (wheels) than the max allowed. But it is only 16 cm deep (max is 23). Never had any problems. I would find it ridiculous if they don't let me through. Please let us know if she had any problems.
