Buy a Digital Copy of Destiny on PS3/360 and Get the PS4/Xone Version Included

150

Buy Destiny digitally on a PS3 or Xbox 360 and you will get the PS4 or Xbox One version included in the price before January 15th 2015. This has already been mentioned by silverrat23 in the forums but I think it deserves a mention as a deal too. Really worth considering buying digital for this one if you currently have a PS3 or 360 and intend on upgrading to a PS4 or Xbox One in the future, as this offer is not available for physical copies. Also, if you have both last and current gen consoles at home attached to the same PSN or Xbox Live account then you are essentially getting two copies of the game for the price of one, as you can continue to play the PS3/360 version after you upgrade to the PS4/XOne version. There are many better deals if you only really plan on playing Destiny on one console, but for those with a need for both this is probably your best value option. Personally, I'm looking forward to playing primarily on my PS4 while also playing online against friends with PS3s.
Full details and answers to frequently asked questions are at the link, or a few have been copied below:

Q. When I buy/redeem the Destiny Digital Base Game, Digital Guardian Edition, or Expansion Pass for PlayStation 3, how do I get the free PlayStation 4 version?

A: When you buy/redeem the Destiny Digital Base Game, Digital Guardian Edition, or Expansion Pass on or before January 15th, 2015, you can download the PlayStation 4 version from the PlayStation Store for free by doing the following:
Log into your PlayStation 4 using the same Sony Entertainment Network Account (PSN ID) used to buy/redeem the Destiny digital content on PlayStation 3.
Navigate to the Destiny content page or search for the corresponding item you purchased previously on PlayStation 3.
Add the item to your cart and complete the transaction.
Wait for the download to complete.
Note: Expansion Pass content (which includes Expansions I and II) will only be available for full download once released.

Q. When I download the free PlayStation 4 version(s), will I still be able to play it on PlayStation 3?

A: Yes. Your Sony Entertainment Network Account (PSN ID) will retain licenses for both consoles.

Q. When I buy the Destiny Limited Edition or Destiny Ghost Edition on PlayStation 3, how do I get the free PlayStation 4 version of the Expansion Pass?

A: Log into your PlayStation 3 and redeem the voucher for the Destiny Expansion Pass in the PlayStation Store on or before January 15, 2015.
Log into your PlayStation 4 any time after using the same Sony Entertainment Network Account (PSN ID) used to redeem the Destiny Expansion Pass on PlayStation 3.
Navigate to the Expansion Pass within the Destiny content page in the PlayStation Store.
Add the item to your cart and complete the transaction and wait for the download to complete.
Wait for the download to complete.
Note 1: Expansion Pass content (which includes Expansions I and II) will only be available for full download once released.
Note 2: A physical or digital PlayStation 4 version of the Destiny game will be required to play this content on PlayStation 4, sold separately

Q. Will your Guardian's, progress, stats, and gears carry over when you download and play the PS4 version?:

A: Yes. Whether you participate in this program or not, your Guardians, progress, stats, and gear are shared within a console family (PlayStation 3<->PlayStation 4) and will be waiting for you when you transition to next-gen.

Not buying it but that's great to see.

Also worth noting that this has not been announced to work in reverse. For example, if you buy the PS4/XOne version digitally there is no confirmation that you will get the PS3/360 version. If you have any interest in getting both copies then I would be purchasing the last-gen versions.

      yes and no.

no if u want to own a physical copy of ps4/xbone version.

    can ps3 peeps play with ps4 ?

    • +3

No, you can only play against players on the same console version. Your character stats are transferable between both versions though.

  • Does it work out cheaper to do this?

    • Destiny sells for the RRP of $99.95 on both online stores. This is a complete rip off in any other situation, but if you want both copies and are not getting them for $50 each somewhere else then this is the best value deal. That said, if you have a US Xbox Live or PSN account then you can get it cheaper on those online stores.

  • I assume you can't do this cross platform
(Buy 360 and redeem PS4 copy?)

    • +1

      Correct, that is not possible.

  • I did this last night, purchased the PS3 on the US store, did the pre-load thing as well. It will not allow me to get it on the PS4 at no charge yet, because it is a pre-order, Once it becomes a regular game to purchase, it will then show as free.

    • Have you put it on your PS4 yet and played it using an AU account? Have you had any problems doing this? I usually purchase games on my US account and then play them in my AU account but I'm unsure about how this one will work seeing it needs PS+ to be able to play…

      • Yes, I did this, this is how all my games are, purchased through US store, played with Aus account, there has never been any problems.

Actually, if you read the description I did mention that you posted it in the forums.

Thanks! I needed to go to Specsavers to notice that! :-)

  • The price for a physical copy of Destiny PS3 seems to be $69

The digital price for PS3 is $99

    Goddamn Aussie tax

    • Activision, the publisher, sets the retail. Retailers choose what they want to sell it for, Sony will always sell the digital copy for whatever the RRP is on release.

  • Thanks OP. Looks like I'll be getting the 360 version online now instead of heading down to target on Tuesday. Bargain!

  • very smart , wouldnt be surprised if this starts happening a lot more. In most cases Im sure by the time ps3 owners get a ps4 they would be bored of the game and wouldnt buy it. Good way to get more coins up front and not have to pay retailers.

  • Just to update those who are waiting to download their free PS4/XOne version; Bungie has stated it should be available by 6pm Wednesday PDT, which I think works out to be about 11am Thursday for us. It's a shame this was not ready to go for launch…
