REPOST - [Vodafone] Free Pocket WiFi 4G (Huawei R215) or USB 4G Modem (K5150) on Additional Services

Mod: We unpublished the original deal as there was an issue with the OP posting on behalf of Vodafone. Please continue to discuss the deal here.

I'll try and sum up what the deal was without overquoting too much:

So basically, if you are an existing Vodafone customer, you are getting a free 4G Pocket Wifi device for signing up Month to Month/12 Mth/24 Mth Mobile Broadband contract with Vodafone.

Here is a trick - if you sign up the month to month plan, you can actually cancel your mobile broadband service anytime you want(though minimum one month fee applies) and keep your 4G device.

Vodafone month to month mobile broadband services - $10(1GB)/mth, $20(2.5GB)/mth…
However, the $10/mth is excluded from this offer, so your minimum spending should be $20

I'm 99% sure that you can unlock this 4G pocket wifi device for free on Vodafone website
https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-serv…

So you guys can use whatever sim card from other network providers(Telstra, Optus or etc) after unlocking the device.

On top of that, some stores offer an additional 10% discount which means you are going to pay $18 instead of $20.
You are not an existing Vodafone customer? You can just sign up a $20 month to month mobile phone voice service and cancel it with the mobile broadband service in the next month. In this case, the minimum spending should $38($20 + $18). This offer ends on 30/09 *

*Note:

There's no "$20 month to month mobile phone service". It increased in price to $25 back in July.

What could be done in order to still achieve the total price of $38 (and hopefully not complicate the post too much) is sign up to 2 x $20 MBB plans. The first without a device at all (SIM Only) so that you're an existing customer, the 2nd to get the free modem and 10% off.

Alternatively you could just change $20 to $25 but that would just be a waste of $5 and against the spirit of being an OzBargainer ;)

Strongly recommend everyone to walk into store or contact Vodafone directly

Anyone know if you cancel the $20m2m plan if a $10 m2m plan can then remain ;)

    • Pretty sure you can change m2m as required..

  • why is the minimum spend $38?

    • On top of that, some stores offer an additional 10% discount which means you are going to pay $18 instead of $20.
You are not an existing Vodafone customer? You can just sign up a $20 month to month mobile phone service >and cancel it with the mobile broadband service in the next month. In this case, the minimum spending >should $38($20 + $18).

      • thanks. i will probably signup to a $2 month to month postpaid plan that I have access to and then sign-up for that deal

      • I just called Vodafone today and they said that I could just sign up to the $20 month to month Wifi service and get the modem for free, no mention of additional plans required.

  • Yeah I had a few dramas trying to get this deal.
If you're not an existing customer, I'd go in-store and sign up for both that way.
If you're existing you can do it online.

I tried to do it online, being a new customer and have no end of issues.
Hopefully I can get this sorted out in a few days.

Interestingly, as I am now a Voda customer, if I go through with this deal,
I still get charged a $99 once off fee. Can someone please confirm if this
    offer is still available?

  • +1

Received mine today - came unlocked
using Telstra SIM - just had to change APN settings
    192.168.0.1 > Mobile Broadband > Connection > Account type > Custom
    IPV4/IPV6 APN = telstra.internet
IP4/IPV6 Number = 1234 ( possible any random number might work)
    all other settings left blank.
    SAVE > DONE

    • would you know what the settings would be for Optus SIM?

    • thanks mate, followed your instructions and now im all good, thank you

    • Thanks - I just put a telstra sim and couldn't connect to the internet. I found your instructions after a google search and they worked a treat. I am sure that I have done this in the past but couldn't remember what to do

  • oh yeah, feel it baby ==> 25.58Mb/s download
Full strength 5 bars of signal in the house and im supposedly in the cyan region (good outdoors, limited indoors)
    Speedtest screenshot http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/959090880

    • 12GBph &feel it=>12mins also.. . based off a common offering @2.5gb pm.
38 ms looks fairly nice though.

Fortunate enough to get some 35gigs yesterday, Kmart 71.25 ie after -%50, -5%
      5 x 4G Sim/ recharges @optus (2 dollar 75 days, $150 worth in data, infinite calls +usual junk).

Benchmark ing by a more useful metric, perhaps pragmatically- capacity.monthly,
I got to an interesting result:-
      OPTUSNE $71= 35GB/75d(14000/324) =speed 43 kbps
      VODAFNE $60= 8GB/60d ( 4000/324 )= speed 12 kbps
      TELSTRA $50= 4GB/60d ( 2000/324 )= speed 6.2kbps['committed capacity btw].

  • Thanks OP! I got mine from the big vodafone shop in Perth CBD hay street. Documentation says $99 charge on modem but shop guy says there will be a credit of $99 dollar so i'm crossing my fingers too. Did not get the 10% discount but i'm not fussed.

Tested with a dodosim out of the box and it worked fine so it came unlocked ( as did with two of my vodafone R208 on prepaid). Seems like you can't save custom profiles though, so it needs to be manually entered each time you swap a sim card to a different provider. however using the vodafone sim the profile is automatically configured, probably cause the sim stores the correct APN.

also 4G 2.5G for $20 a month is not bad! i might use it for a few months.

  • Bought the device a few hours ago , I tried unlocking the device via the Vodafone unlock page, but error message showed up indicating that the imei is not recognized. Can anyone confirm this device comes unlocked?

    • I tried the same however it shows as 'NOT LOCKED'. I'm guessing it probably isn't but will call VF tomorrow to confirm.

    • I have a R215 and it came unlocked. I tried that with my prepaid vodafone R208 and got the same message. It was already unlocked so thats probably why you're getting the same error.

  • Hi. I got the device on Monday the 8th of Sep (I had paid $18 for a month-to-month contract) and can confirm that the service is currently working. I asked the salesperson at the time as to how the billing cycle would work and she told me that it would match with my current billing cycle and I would be charged pro-rata until the end of my current billing period and then I would be charged $18 for the next billing period. Now my billing cycle ends on 16th so if I were to cancel the service by say 15th, would I get charged $18*8/30=$4.8 (for the usage between 8th to 15th) or would I be charged the full $18 and I can use it till 10th of next month? Could anyone please help me with this? Thanks in advance.

FYI Called up Voda today to cancel as of the end of the month for which I had paid 20$ for… and they said they will credit the unused portion back pro rata.

So, as an existing customer this modem essentially cost about $5….

  • Not an existing Voda customer, tempted to sign up just for the 4g modem. Do they run credit checks for these post paid month to month plans?

    • Yes - credit check is done.

      • is credit check done on existing customers for additional plan?

  • +1

Received device on 10th cancelled on 12th. Billing cycle ended on 15th costed me approx $1.59 :)

    • I thought the m2m plan was for a min of 1 month $20?

      • Implying theyd cut the month and refunded the difference (on at least one of two Voda post paid accounts). Good that VF got in early with the discounted HW; I expect $40 prepaid modems will be common in a few months + without the chicanery w'contracts.<hopefully+700Mhz then done properly..:-)

  • Can anybody confirm please that you have cancelled the plan before the commencement of following billing cycle and you have indeed received the $99 credit in the invoice relating to the current billing period.

  • Are the prepaid customers eligible for this offer.

  • I can't seem to find the $10(1GB)/mth m2m plan anywhere on Vodafone website. Help anyone?

    • It's not available anymore.

  • Is someone able to post the mobile broadband settings for Telstra on this device. I have entered Telstra.internet in the APN but it is also asking me for the IPv4/6 number. Thanks

    • i use it with telstra too but I don't have my device now. Does *99# worK?

      • Hi wdwd123,

Thanks for the tip, I tried the above number but it did not work until I changed securytiy type to CHAP, instructions here as wellhttps://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158100

  • Does anyone know if this offer is still going? Thanks.

  • Not sure if it's only me, but I jumped onto the deal when it was posted the first time, 1 Nov, then cancelled it on the 28 Nov. Then the bill came and I was charged the full $99 for the modem, Vodafone stating that's because I ended the service before the first month finished. Needless to say I'm less than impressed, so I'm in the process of the disputing the charge now. Just a heads up for anyone thing of cancelling early.
