  • always wondered if say you join these tours, could you actually stay on a bit more than the length of the tour?? ie. say stay another 3 weeks after the tour??

    • You can, but you have to contact the actual tour company to arrange it. Note that they will charge you for any changes made though!

      • cool, thanks. wanted to know about that for ages, never bothered asking… ;)

        • We did an 8 day tour last year through one of these things. We had a couple join up as we were leaving Beijing, a couple leave us after Xian, and a few that stayed on in Shanghai that were extending their stay or travelling on to other cities!

I would check that this is not a "shopping" tour where you spend 2-3 hours at museums, landmarks, etc and the rest of the time being a captive audience to sales people.

The following activities are likely to be sales focused:
    * Experience the traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony while sampling China’s locally-favored brews at a Tea House
    * Continue to learn about Jade, China’s most precious and celebrated stone, and its manufacturing process at the largest Jade factory in Beijing.
    * Later experience and enjoy the Orient Foot Massage to learning and experience traditional Chinese medicine treatment that our nerve zones or reflex points go from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all vital organs on the way
    * Later visit Silk Factory Outlet to Learn about silk, the very trade item which
started the famous Silk Road, and its delicate manufacturing process.

If you go on tours that have multiple cities, your room within the hotel will be influenced by the amount you spend.

If you go on tours that have multiple cities, your room within the hotel will be influenced by the amount you spend.

I have to disagree with that. Yes, we went on the shopping tours of the Jade factory, Silk factory, etc. But I'm a skeptical tightass, and as I knew we'd be going to Shanghai, I barely spent anything in these places. I must say how incredibly surprised I was at the quality of hotels and hotel rooms provided. Some of the nicest, well equipped rooms I've ever stayed in!

Edit: I've travelled a fair bit, and yeah, you could easily spend a few weeks/months exploring, but we just wanted a no fuss, don't have to think about, let them get us there type tour… And that's exactly what this sort of thing is. You get all the highlights that you've read about in books done in a week or so!

The hotels we stayed at were all of good quality and I would happily stay at most of them again. My point was that people who spent more at the shops were given larger rooms on higher floors.

The location of all the shops were in isolated business parks which meant you were stuck looking at overpriced jade / silk and couldn't even wander through other shops or sites. The worst experience was the last day of the tour where we had to walk through a $2 shop where you had to literally walk past everything. Personally, I would prefer more time to wander around with less time spent in overpriced stores.

It is very comparable to the captive Gold Coast tours that were sold to Japanese about a decade ago and banned by the government.

You can book similar tours for $100-200 and make your own travel arrangements (e.g. add a few days in Hong Kong).

        • At these prices? With accommodation and guide/s? You have to do a bit of work to put something like this together.
Think for what I'm the feeling right now (lazy and don't have much time) this is an easy way toget a break from the daily grind. Only problem is scheduling that and convincing the one who has veto power.

        • @leon: Visit travel agents in your local Chinatown and you should be able to find similar tours for $100-$200 and then book separate flights. These tours make money from what you spend on the tour.

An example is Nexus who currently have a Chinese Sampler tour - 11 days for $1399 and 8 day tours priced as little as $99 (but you have to speak Mandarin or know someone who does).

Just read the actual deal a little closer. I must honestly say though, If you're going to spend this much, you're better off spending a little more and get a tour that gives you a lot more!
Pretty sure it was with Nexus, and I'll find out how much ours cost, but it was a couple of days longer and also included Xian (Terracotta Warriors) and Shanghai!
Although I'd love to see more of China, I know I've at least seen the major (tourist) parts!

  • The main concern for me and my family is that I heard the air pollution is very bad there to the point ppl over there wear masks all the time and it turn all brown…

Is it actually as bad as some ppl made me to believe?

    • There are better and worse times of the year to travel. At it's worst it is very bad.

  • I did this same tour, but with Nexus, just last month, with one of these deals. It's full on, each day, but you didn't have to participate in everything, if you didn't want to (maybe it was just our guides?) but it was good and that's coming from someone who does not usually do tours (it was my second, in my life!).
Good value for money, great hotels, buses, restaurants etc. You're not forced to buy anything, you don't want. Air pollution? No where near as bad as it was made out to be and I was there in the middle of their summer! China is crazy, busy and well worth a visit!
