GST on Grey Imports > $1000

I would like to purchase a camera lens from eGlobal that is more than $1,000.

If I am correct, I would have to pay GST, how does this actually work? I've also heard these retailers sometimes fudge the price so I don't have to pay GST. Anybody know much about this?

I would contact eGlobal, but I'd like to have some background knowledge first so I don't look like an idiot they can push around.

Cheers :)

  • "sometimes fudge the price so I don't have to pay GST."

Some do, you'll need to contact them, some like DWI forward it to their Aus holding warehouse (as a stock transfer) and then ship it to you.

If you need to pay GST, the shipping company will hold it in place of customs, and contact you for GST payment for package release.

    • A "stock transfer" is exempt from tax? I've never heard of that. Can you link me to a source?

  • Second for DWI. They assured me via chat they would reimburse any Gst when I asked about buying a $1000+ macbook.
I didn't end up buying, but I am interested in how they do that.

  • Ask seller to mail receipt/paperwork separately from the camera lens and to put a fictitious value on the customs declaration, say $800. 99% of the time the seller will accommodate you to get the deal.
