    Thanks TA.

  • What format are they in?

    • MP3

    • +1

MP3 LAME Variable BitRate preset V3

  • +4

Bitrate is only 151-171kbps, so not great quality! You're better off listening on YouTube even (At least you'll have full tracks)

    • +4

File properties show tracks vary from 168 to 320kbps, so if you're going to comment, please state facts. Thanks.

Edit: thanks for the neg, whoever you are :)

        Track 3: 124
        Track 4: 136
        Track 5: 150
        Track 6: 172
        Track 7: 171
        Track 8: 182
        Track 9: 163
        Track 10: 146
        Track 11: 174
        Track 12: 166
        Track 13: 165
        Track 14: 165

At any rate, I can physically hear the difference in quality as compared to some of my other classical tracks. They are most certainly inferior, but still acceptable for listening.

          @-.-:
I'm on my iPad now, but they're certainly not the bit rates I got when I checked on a Vista (yes Vista) laptop. There was at least one file at 320 (track 13 I think) and quite a few in the 200s. I'll screenshot them tomorrow if I have time. Take care.

          @tightarse:
They are all in LAME VBR V3 which is generally superior to 192k CBR
V3 is generally considered indistinguishable from uncompressed audio, except in very rare cases of compression artifacts.

        • @mycosys:

That means that the above comments about them sounding inferior is probably due to the recording equipment from 1967 or a poor transfer from said recording to CD?

        • +3

          @-.-:

          but still acceptable for listening.

Really? Well at least we can still listen to it as opposed…to all the other things you do with MP3 files…

        • +2

lol and "I can physically hear" as opposed to those sounds from within his head ;)

        • +1

          @Agret:
Spot on - it could be anywhere in the sound path, but is not the encoder or it's settings.
Could be the mics, the cables, the mixing desk, the recording system. analog storage media degrading over time, playback gear, DAC equipment or a bunch of other sources of noise and non-linearity in the analog sound path but once it was converted it was treated well.
There is much to be said for analog recordings but it is a hell of a lot harder to do well than DDD recordings, and so many more places to introduce distortion.

      • lol the file is only 89 mb, I don't even need to look at the metadata nor listen to the music to see if it's bad quality.

some people here are saying that VBR means it's better than a constant rate, but that's not the case when it dips down to 60kbps which it does.

        • +1

if there is silence or a few simple frequencies it can dip a hell of a lot lower than that and still have exemplary quality. That is the point of VBR, some passages require very high bitrates to encode faithfully, some require next to nothing.
If LAME 3.98 VBR V3 preset is dropping to 60 kbps it is because that is all it needs to record all the audible frequencies in a passage, it does not reflect any drop in quality. But what would I know, I have only been working sound for 25 years, only a trained audio/TV/PC electrotechnician.

        • Electrotechnician?

        • @thevofa:
Would electronic engineering associate/technician be any more meaningful to you?

    • +2

Sorry -.- ,but you are full of it

      Have some actual information.
      http://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=LAME
Only people who know NOTHING about audio and in particular audio compression would comment on average bitrates taken from windows explorer without knowing anything more about the encoder settings.
Try this next time eh http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

my computer detected malware in your download link.

        • +1

Then you need a new antivirus as both those links are positively famous.

My mum enjoys classical music so I'll add this to her collection.

To those worried about bitrates and formats, don't be - the actual recordings seem to be low quality - some tracks have background hiss, lack of clarity etc, and this is not due to the encoding but the source material which probably wasn't recorded digitally to begin with.

It's free, doesn't cost you a cent, so crank it up and annoy the neighbors :)
