Red energy all the way…You can use referral from wiki and get $50 vouchers..PM me if you need my referral

  • +29

You will for sure need a cheap energy company to keep your taser charged in Dandenong.

  • +3

@thorton… Any reasons why you say this….Is it a Bad Suburb is it….

    • +20

Yes, it is a very bad suburb. Especially moving from Caufield. Don't worry, if you are with Red Energy, you can afford an electric fence on your property.

      • +5

I work there and have to admit I'm glad I don't live there. They've spent quite a lot trying to fix the place up like re-doing the main street and such but it's the people…you just can't fix them.

I don't know the whole area that well though so there might be some OK pockets.

        • +15

I think the only OK pockets are the ones that haven't been picked yet.

        • +5

There are more than ok pockets for sure. But council is in the process of screwing those places up. Depends on your status council would even bend the rules and ammend the plan of zones that it has already published on their web site. I've seen the different treatment from council to different people few times before.
They'we done one favor for me though. They rejected the subdivision request of the previous owner of the land where I live now. He wanted to subdivide it and build 2 townhouses on the block with 30 m street frontage. Council rejected it as the estate has only detached big houses. So the previous owner sold the land in a hurry and I could buy for reasonably less price tag. However couple years later council approved the plan for crappy un sustainable high density apartment building withing the same estate and among the same houses. That was even worst spot as it was in a bend at a court location. Council later changed the published zone plan as well. There are people who know how to work the system very well.

I too lived in Caulfield North before and now living here for over 3 years. For me no difference except the people who are whinging about the area but never lived here. I don't think you'll have any trouble.

      • "Don't worry, if you are with Red Energy, you can afford an electric fence on your property"
        LOL

I have been living in Dandenong North for 16 years now. My house hasn't been robbed before or anything, if that's what you're wondering lol. The neighbourhood seems nice and all. There is just one area that usually consists of all the trouble, called Menzies Avenue, but other than that, the stereotype usually lies around central Dandenong, rather than Dandenong North. The point of this comment isn't to tell you that this suburb is a great suburb or anything, i'm just trying to calm you down a bit since there are a few comments mentioning that Dandy North isn't a good place to live. Therefore, I think it's liveable here, although I can admit that the people here, who mostly consist of lower or working class, who seem to have bad attitudes, which i notice often since i have to catch a bus to and from Dandenong Station every day.

  • +11

Gas and electricity pricing probably shouldn't be your highest concern. I'd be more worried and home and personal security. Wouldn't live in Dandenong these days if it was free. No matter what the council does to make the place appealing, it's getting worse too. Buy a can of pepper spray.

    • +2

Exactly what are you basing this on? Lived here for a decade and haven't felt threatened once, and I would say the community here is great. Or is this anecdotal evidence and misinformation?

  • +6

I stopped at "Just Moving Home from Caufield to Dandenong North" and asked WHY?

    • +12

What's wrong with Dandenong North? So many of you geographic snobs can't see past the Dandenong tag to see sense…it's a perfectly okay area with no less trouble makers than anywhere else. Just come a little away from the traditional hotspots of Springvale, Noble Park and Dandenong and you have some very desirable real estate. Maybe the OP is moving there for a more family friendly house…

      • +6

My wife was just telling me there are some areas in Dandenong North that aren't bad.

And as I said in my earlier post I can only comment on the central area near where I work (that aren't good IMHO). Good luck to you mkar18.

The CBD is a hole. A melting pot of villany.

South is a hole also with heaps of gaudy McMansions

North- Rosewood downs is classy. Menzies is not.

          West is the worst.

          East is ok.

        • @rodripa:

+1. Further north closer to Mulgrave, is actually desirable.. Almost moved their myself.. especially good if your walking distance to the park with Dandy Creek. Interesting to see how it degrades the further south you go..

        cough bullshit cough cough

        • +4

I live in that area and I don't think you do so cough cough bullshit someplace else and stop spreading untruths…

        • -4

          @Tal_Shiar:

I can guarantee you that the inner east of Melbourne has a lot less trouble makers. Just look at crime statistics. Do you really think Dandenong is safer than somewhere like Camberwell or Toorak?

        • @thorton82: compare apple with apples, not with oranges

        • +2

          @Tal_Shiar:

So compare one bad suburb with another? OK, Dandenong is probably on par with Frankston. You are the one who said 'anywhere else'.

In response to the OP, Dandenong is much, much more unsafe than Caufield for example.

        • +2

You seem to live a sheltered life, do you judge things in life from what other people tell you or do you experience things for yourself? What does it matter where people live? I responded to the foolish comments like yours taking potshots at where people live, all the OP needs to do is shop around for the best deal, maybe even haggle for a better price with his current provider. Again you compared Dandenong to Caulfield, the OP isn't moving to Dandenong, he is moving to Dandenong North, a very subtle difference, these two are not the same…

        • +3

          @Tal_Shiar:

          Relax buddy, its not personal.

        • +3

          @thorton82:

Ha Camberwell and Toorak, doubt OzB people live in those surburbs, then again, they might with all the savings…

        • @gokhanh:

Plenty of ozbargainers live in nice suburbs.

        • i live in cambwerwell!

        • @thorton82:

Hope they're not the same ones who feel compelled to point out which suburbs are not good…

      • +2

Some parts of North Dandy are actually quite nice. Think Rosewood downs- some houses there command 700K+ and they get it.

Menzies avenue part of Dandy North on the other hand….. think Doveton, but less hilly.

Best advice is to do your own research at http://www.yourchoice.vic.gov.au/.

I recently moved and signed up for the following based on my research:

Powershop.com.au for electricity - Good rates, regular discount packs, $75 signon bonus, no contract
Lumo.com.au for Gas - Good rates when taking into account pay on time 15% discount. 2 year no risk plan. They will price match a competitor or let you out if you find cheaper rates with others.

Powershop will give you $75 on signup if referred - PM me if you need a referral (referee also gets $75).

    • LOL

  • Pm me for referrals to powershop. $75 credit.

The rent is cheap in Dandenong for a reason. I think the only place that's worse is Frankston.Maybe try to look for a place in Hampton Park. Its the next suburb but its quite safe. Easy access to train (pakenham line). Rent is decent. Very multicultural too but in a good way.The people are friendly.

Just don't mind the terrorists ;)

I used to live in Caulfield North when I first migrated to Australia for first few years. That was after living for many years in a posh area in Georgia, USA. I didn't find any issues except the thing that people are less considerate about the others especially people who were renting and are not that tidy. (I too was renting but wouldn't do the same - due to the way I was raised in my childhood) Then I built a house in Springvale and live there for few years now. My neighbors are mainly asian migrants and all very friendly with me. Very nice neighbors. I have forgotten to lock my front door and one left the garage door opened and stayed the weekend at a friend place, not a single thing was lost when I came back. My builder had left many of his expensive tool during the cause of construction of my house when I visited in weekends. He told me that it was normal for them to loose few tools by the time they finished a house but at my place they didn't loose a single thing. So I was happy.
In current place, the only issue I found a year back was that one house right in front mine was rented and the tenants started parking all over the court. At neighbors doors, nature strips etc and then throw garbage in the road, leave the bins over flawn and let the rubbish blown to the surrounding properties and road, etc. This can happen anywhere. One of my friend had a worst neighbor after spending over a million to acquire a property in Glen waverly. All the property advocate friends I had at the time when I bought were proven wrong later. So my suggestion to you is not to listen to those who advice you without any first hand experience in living in the area. Still pick the best place you can afford for the money you have access to. You can not live your life if you listen to every body elses opinion and following them.

    • I use Lumo Energy for Electricity and used to have Red Enrgy for Gas. Recently moved gas as well into Lumo but Red is marginally cheaper. In my case it make sense to have both in one place as I have a solar system.
Try to negotiate a good discount on the electricity usage and you'll be fine. All the best.

      • How many solar systems are there?!

  • +2

powershop is the way to go for electricity.
i see how much i use everday,
and also heat maps per half hour blocks everyday.

  • If recommend staying away from lumo. Their customer "care" is one of the worst, and their "retention" team is a joke.

  • I'm an ozbargainer living in hawthorn, we do exist :)

    • Cambewell…we must be the only ones..lol
before that was Canterbury, Hawthorn east and Balwyn ;) Not every 'cheap' person live in 'lower class' suburbs

      • +1

We live in Parkdale and quite a few people on here, that I now of, lives in Brighton and Sandringham. What does where you live have to do with being an ozbargainer?

        • ithats what i was trying to imply..sorry if u got offended. i did not mean it :)

        • +1

          @ahly92: not at all offended..and I didn't neg you.

  • its time for you to look for surveillance camera packages at ozbargain

  • +1

Seriously guys… Haven't logged in for ages to comment (seriously) but just had to do it before the Suburb snobs got in ;) too late for that methinks.

I know, we're just cheapskates or "frugal" with our money so if it doesn't have anything to do with a bargain i'm assuming that we "meh…" it and move on to looking for eneloop deals again.

Mkar18 you're fine mate. I live in SE Mlbn (past 15yrs) & we've had no issues so far, in fact I recommend living out here. I feel more threatened late at night in Mlbn CBD to be honest.

And rather than ranting, here are the facts. For us ignorant ones (and sadly they vote too)…. this was in our papers 2 days ago. 2 DAYS!! Perhaps we need to read more.

Interactive Map of Residential Burglary Rates by Postcode (2013/14)
    http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/our-mostburgled-suburbs-ci…

    Dandy/Bangholme gets 13.8 burglaries per 1000 homes
    Malvern East/Darling/Caulfield gets…. 14.9 burglaries per 1000 homes

I'd recommend you all to click on that link & check it out (incase your suburb is not as safe as you think).

Hope we all benefit from my rant.
    Toodles

    • PS. Red Energy gets my vote (ensure you get someone to refer you to get that voucher!)
