  • Around how many Kgs of meat can it dry at one time?

    • +2

You can dry up to 3kg's at a time, you can do more but it will take longer to dry. I wouldn't max it past 4kg's

What does this do that a regular food dehydrator for $40 doesn't?

    • the aldi one isn't as sexy :-)

I got one from homeart for $30, and it makes great biltong.

    • Looks like you can't hang the meat as easily, this one has rods at the top. probably easy to modify the aldi one though. I have one similar i use to make jerky in strips.

looking at this one, you might have a problem with the meat dripping onto the heating element below the trays (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqYgevYwl28)
It's also very small, so you'll have to slice your meat very thin.
The Biltong king has a fan which is the main source to dehydrate the meat/fruit/veg, it's a slower process thus allowing the nutrients to dry rather than cook.

  • glass or Perspex sides?

    • Perspex

  • Not a bargain unless the bargain is free shipping. These things are a rip off, cheap plastic. Worth about $40 max. Drying some chilli from my plant took 3-4 weeks in this thing. Outside of it took 2 weeks.

I had a 30 dollar one from homeart but upgraded to a 9 tray Excalibur. ..

    Delicious times

    • Did you get it locally or from Amazon? I’ve been thinking myself about Excalibur for ages.

    • wow, they are expensive!

Made my own with a storage container and exhaust fan. $35 parts and 1 hour labour. Easy done.

      ^ This.

Just make sure you put fly-screen over the air vents unless you want squirmy biltong (because: maggots)

I did a heap of research a few years back from buying a kit to making my own. In the end I used my oven with the door slightly open and fan forced at 50 degrees. My meat is done in around 9hrs. Just be sure to rotate the meat every 3to4 hrs. Recipes take trial and error and for those willing to experiment. In the end it is up to what you like. Just like home brewing… To which I DON'T user the oven!

OP this looks like an OK product for the price and for people who want to make jerky/biltong in a no fuss manner. Hope they sell well.

Thanks mate, I have explored many homemade versions as many people have. For simplicity, easy of use, easy to clean and longevity, these are great units. I've had a customer who converted a fridge and used a bathroom extraction fan and he swears by it :-)

I strive to be this eccentric! Maybe one day I shall master this.

Side note: JV is already there.

  • How are these in high humidity areas like Qld in summer time.
If I put two KG of beef in it sliced thin (I like thin slices) when would it be ready to put in a zip lock bag?
I assume beef jerky, biltong etc are the same thing?

    Is that chopper thing included?

    • +1

We are on the Gold Coast so have the humidity too. The light bulb negates the humidity, the thinner you slice it, the quicker it will dry so you should be fine. If you are slicing the meat under 2cm thick then it should be ready in 2-3 days or 3-4 days for very dry.

Nah mate, the chopper is not included :-(

      • I was just about to ask if you were on the Gold Coast when I saw your phone number (I'm on the coast too). Do you have a shop front I can visit?

        • If you could please contact us on our webpage we can get talking, cheers

      Them's fightin' words Mister!

Well back in the day jerky was made in a similar way to biltong, but that has all changed now with food bodies wanting food to be cooked and also people wanting their meat ASAP.
Jerky is either baked and / or smoked now days, but back in the day it was air dried.

        • I used to buy beef jerky and the beach markets in Surfers, haven't seen the guy there for a while now.
I like jerky kind of dry. Isn't biltong more wet and raw meat kind of flavour - or am I completely wrong. I had Geronimo jerky from Bris and thought it to be OK.

And I thought it was all air dried. (you can tell I am no expert)

        • @PVA:

My understanding is biltong is air dried. Jerky is fan forced.

          Or something.

Dont listen to me im drunk with no jerky to sustain me
