Changes to The Skype Subscription in Australia

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I noticed some changes in the Skype subscription and a bit of research showed the following.

There is/going to be some changes in the Skype subscription, which could be the reason for the recent 50% off sale (link).
What is the new Skype Premium subscriptions offer

Old Subscription - Call mobiles and landlines over 50 countries and the annual fees as follows,
* 300 min - A$38.49
* 600 min - A$67.49
* Unlimited - A$116.49

There are going to be two new subscriptions:
Normal Premium subscription, which only includes Australian land lines - Call mobiles and landlines over 50 countries and the annual fees as follows,
* 300 min - A$42.99
* 600 min - A$67.99
* Unlimited - A$99.99

Another Premium, which includes Australian land lines and mobiles . This can be accessed via (this link). Then, select "Check Destinations" -> Type "Australia" and select from the drop down list -> click "Update Premium to include Australia (landlines and mobiles)". Call mobiles and landlines over 75 countries and the annual fees as follows,
* 300 min - A$46.99
* 600 min - A$71.99
* Unlimited - A$209.99

I am not sure when these changes are going to come into effect, at this stage both can be accessed.

If you are going to get subscription that will provide unlimited calls to Australian land lines and mobiles, then the old subscription is better, otherwise (300 min or 600 min subscriptions) worth considering the new subscription which includes 75 countries including India.

    What is SKYPE? …..

  • Good post, thx!

  • Nice find mate!

  • Good post… Thanks for this! :)

  • Surprising, as their cost for terminating calls to Aussie mobiles has plummeted over the last three years. This doesn't make much sense.

    • Is this not the first time they added mobile?

  • Thanks Op. Looks like the old subscription only allows landline calls in Aust. I was going to purchase for both calls in aust to landline and mobile.

    Seems like the old subscription doesn't have Australian landlines anymore on it either.

      OK. I decided to be a guinea pig and subscribe to the link for the old plan. Seems that I can get calls to Australian mobiles included.

      • Are you talking about the old unlimited plan? if so pls let us know if local mobile calls are included. thanks

        • +1

          Yep! I clicked on the first link https://secure.skype.com/catalog/buy/premium/ui?zone=false last night and subscribed. I tested it this evening by calling my mobile number for 2 minutes and it is included in my time.

          @morphio: That's great news. I'm going to give it a go as well. Have redeemed the codes and purchased the old premium plan for $116.49. Will report back tomorrow how it goes.

        • @hsf: any luck with it?

          Please let me know if, in the alternate, Microsoft let you swap with -6.50-cheaper Australian mobile 600 min/$109.99 sub.

          If AU = no Mobile, it's waste IMO

        • @daver: yes it worked for me too. In the call history it shows as $0.00 amount - tried it on a 1:05 mobile call.

          Good luck with your account.

        • @hsf: for some reason it is showing as $119.99. is this the same plan?

        • @dealsniper: dw found the link on the original $58 thread that links to the $116. can also confirm that mobiles are included. thanks op!

  • oh no, I finally managed to get $125 worth of cards 2day. have already scratched 2 and saw this post :(

  • Well based on my previous experience, I have been on the even older (now discontinued) plan where only Australian landline was included for like around 160 dollars. That subscription was automatically renewed for like 2 years until I realized earlier this year that the new subscription (with mobiles for 116) are available.

    Even the old subscription is no longer available for purchase, under "my account" it still showed that Skype will make recurring charges to my card to renew the old subscription. I just renewed my subscription in September and I hope it will be the same scenario where my current subscription will keep rolling over until I cancel. If Skype will cancel that and force the new subscription onto us it'd be really cheap of them to do so.

  • had a chat with skype. Cant do anything about the changes. says to wait for later offers :(

  • Thanks op for pointing out the new plans. Went for the new 600 min option. all works well but cant seem to get on the go option to work from home phone yet.

  • does it mean 600min. for the year ?

    • +1

      spoke online with skype customer service - reply was
      When you purchase Skype 600min Premium - you will get 600 minutes monthly.

  • I wouldn't see myself using up greater than a couple hundred hours [16.7h pm] p.a worth of flatrate mobiles. However, it would be interesting to know if that is even viable. Supposing it would work for some interim period, but will Microsoft revert your package down to 39 mobile-country excludes AUs/published offer. IRT/premium/ui?zone=false A$116.49

    Have in writing /take any screenshots ? /
    they 'll just revert it at their discretion.

  • wheres the currently available skype discount? is it only the 30% gift card for now? thanks!

    • You can get 50% off cards from Woolworths/cole and big w

      • oops, i think it ended yesterday, 50% off haha

        • You can still try Bigw their catalogue ends today or Australia post ends 2 nov.

  • The 50% offer was available 11 months ago. I think this is just a move by Microsoft to increase profitability.

  • Hate skype so much , they suck. , they cut 7 of our staffs business accounts. They had been using them for 1 year did nothing different then got disabled one by one. Helpdesk were no help as the wouldn't tell us what we did wrong, just told us to read the entire document. I did and I can't find any clause that we broke. Even after formatting and installing a new account it also got locked !!! HElpdesk said you have to use another computer. …Anyone have any ideas on this and as to why they are locked.

    Oh and btw I discovered that if you go OS and buy plans , the plans offered are based on the country you are in at the time. Interesting if you have an VPN ? Cut over to the country of your choice but a cheapest plan wait a day, then cut back to AU. anyone tried or will they cut me off again ? Grrrr
