Vacuum Recommendations for Pet Hair

Hi All,

We've recently moved into a house with carpet and bamboo floor boards and I need a new vacuum cleaner :)

We have 4 hairy fur kids who shed a lot of hair… it's so fine that my vacuum isn't picking it up on the carpet (I have a 6 year old Wertheim with a power head that has seen better days that replaced a 10 year old Dyson).

Can anyone recommend a good, reliable vacuum - I'd prefer bagless - that is good on both hard floors and carpet and is excellent on pet hair please? Budget < $1000.

Thanks guys :D

  • Can't go past a Dyson!! I just got a DC54 with the turbine head and that's amazing for picking up all the tiniest bits and pieces, including my hair and the dogs (haha) and works well on both carpet and hard floors. Bagless & extremely powerful. I got the DC54 Animal Pro (RRP $1099) on sale recently from Myer and saved a few hundred bucks. The only difference between the different DC54 models is the attachments that come with the vacuum. If you've got pet hair make sure you get a model that comes with the turbine head. The mini turbine that came with mine is handy for the sofa and car too. Set up a search alert for 'dyson' on here and get emails whenever people see them on sale :)

  • I think Dyson will be great for you. I have few friends who bought Dyson and they swear by it.
I, myself don't have one but I actually consider in buying one soon

  • We bought a Dyson a year ago, my wife became one of these Dyson evangelists raving about it. One year on she hates the thing, endless reliability issues and sick of having to get hair out of the power head which clogs up really quickly with her and my daughters long hair. We also have a Miele we got for $200 (ozbargain ftw) and that is all we use now, great suction and bags are quite cheap.

  • We bought a Vax Air3 Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner after the OzBargain heads-up (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/147764).

Our pug cross sheds every day, and twice on weekends, and this thing is really up to the job.

The first run over the carpets with this thing was scary in how much we picked up!

We would pay full price if we needed another, and could not find a deal - strong words from an OzBargainer :-)

  • Thanks guys, I had been leaning towards to Dyson however I just couldn't commit, I think I'll get one if the Vax doesn't feel good tomorrow. The new Vax model at $399 looks good ChrisLevo; I'm wondering if you can vacuum the couch with your model?

  • Sure can, and do.

It has a detachable hose and cleaning attachment.
