Best Monitor for Eyes (24" - 27")

Hi guys, recently my eyes have been very strained with the macbook air screen. So I'm looking for a larger monitor that's the best for eyes. I've read that antiglare and matte finish screens are better for the eyes…although not entirely sure.

I work at home, and I'm on the screen for 8-10 hours a day. I'm looking to spend around $600 or less. Any recommendations, e.g what brand/model/price/deals would be greatly appreciated.

Dell U2412M is a cheap 24' IPS monitor that has really stood the test of time. It's matte, and has excellent colours. I would advise going to the website and speaking with a sales rep, and asking for the best price - historically they have been $279, and I wouldn't advise paying a dollar over that amount.

With regards to your eye strain, make sure you take 30 second breaks every 30 mins and look at something in the distance to relax your eyes.

    • ^ If i can give this guy 100+ I would. Dell Ultrashapr 24" is the way to go. I love mine :-). Although I paid 700+ over 5 years ago :-(

    • I did a live chat and the rep said he can't beat any price that's already discounted.

Eg the U2412M http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&c… is $359 down from $449 so he couldn't discount it further.

If you havent already picked something up, Austin Computers in Perth has it for $309 including free shipping (according to the side banners). Not quite the $279 but cheaper than Dell direct.

        • Thanks. Interestingly dell have reduced their RRP to $419 and it's on sale there for $335

Yes, OP, 'antiglare', and especially, matte, do cause less eyestrain. I personally have always tried to resist the initial allure of glossy screens - not always easy.

Low blue-light levels emitted from monitors (and LED's, inherently) are also being recognised as an important factor to consider when it comes to eyestrain (and sleep-pattern disturbance).
Already factored into some of my purchases and certainly will influence the purchase of my next monitor.

Have a look on the BenQ website. They have a range that feature a specific 'low blue light' mode.

I believe that some other manufacturers are also in the process of jumping onboard.

  • Thanks for your recommendation! I checked online at Dell and saw the price for the Dell Ultrasharp is selling for $320. What ways can I get a discount on the price? Cheers

Have you tried using the program "f.lux"? justgetflux.com

  • Thanks for the recommendation of flux. Never used it before, but I'll give it a try. Does that really work well? I'll give it a try. Cheers

Flux adjusts the color temperature of your display depending on the time of day.

      Daytime— cooler temp, bluer hues
Night time — warmer temp, orange hues

It does alleviate the strain of looking at a monitor at night, but it won't magically turn a crappy monitor into a good one.

I'd definitely get the Ultrasharp, these are great monitors.

  • How did you get it to $279 from $369??

    Is that with shipping/ins.?

    Curious?

    Cheers

  • Actually, for most people high resolution screens can actually INCREASE eyestrain, due to the reduced size of icons, text, labels, toolbars, etc. (even on a 30" monitor everything is smaller), much of which can not be resized in all programs, esp web and legacy software. High res monitors are great for people without enough desk space for a multiple screen setup, but compromise on ergonomics. Admittedly Mac OSX is better at this than Windows, (win10 will improve this somewhat), but you will be better of with a screen that has a high refresh rate, and better colour temp (factor in the ambient light and reflections around the screen). Here are some screens that qualify:

    • Nobody is recommending 4k monitors here. The Ultrasharp is a 1920 X 1200 (16:10) display, which is excellent for any purpose (except gaming, games seem to prefer 16:9)

      • Agreed — I use a pair of U3014's at work and they aren't great for general purpose use because of the above reasons, but they are brilliant for graphics work due to a wide, accurate colour gamut.
4k+ monitors sound good on paper, but until there is real OS support for them, they are just a nice gimmick for gamers.
I appreciate that the OP is planning to use the monitor on Apple, so display scaling is less of an issue, but it's far from perfect, whether in OSX or Parallels. For anyone with astigmatism or myopia a higher resolution screen at low refresh (60Hz or less) will only cause more problems, while a larger screen with higher refresh (120Hz+) is guaranteed to reduce eye strain.

  • Dell U2415 is the successor of U2412M.

    Review: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2415.htm

"The U2415 made a very nice update to the U2412M as well. There's more modern connectivity options including HDMI offered, the new slim bezel design, USB 3.0 support, factory calibration and touch sensitive buttons on the new model. Dell have also moved to the light AG coating instead of the grainy old coating on the U2412M, and also used a flicker free backlight this time which is great news. Default setup is better on the U2415 thanks to the factory calibration, and Dell have also improved response times and eliminated the noticeable overshoot seen on the older model. All in all this is a better screen than the U2412M and if you're looking for a 16:10 aspect ratio 24" model this is a great all-round performer."

I ordered Dell U2415 direct from Dell yesterday via phone for $390.15 after 15% corporate discount. GST = $35.47.

  • Thanks but I already bought the U2412M…wish the U2415 came out sooner, would have been nice to get the updated one
