Oh sonuva… If I haven't been buying all sorts of stuff lately maybe I could've justified this :( Still tempted though.

I'm building a new video editing PC at the beginning of June. To buy the U2412M for $279.00 now, or wait to see if it gets cheaper by then? Seems that there's a "sale" on this monitor every couple of weeks at the same price.

  • +1

Sale says : Maximum of 2 units per customer.

But if you try to order 2, the checkout says "One Unit Per Customer (Ends Wed, April 25)"

So need to speak to a Dell Rep, and they can fix the order up.

    • Perhaps try ordering through the Dell SMB rather than the Home & Home Office site - I remember ordering one U2142M during the last sale and getting someone else to order another, but when she clicked through she saw a limit of two rather than one.

I don't know for sure, but I think that might have been the key difference.

  • Hallelujah! I had just sold off my U2412M because it was too small and was waiting for the U2711 to come back on sale! :)

  • I've been waiting for this deal.. but i've since discovered and pulled the trigger on 2x Catleap monitors - no regrets :)

    • I presume they are the ones from Korea.
Have you got them yet - if so what are they like? I'm thinking of getting one myself, they all use the LG panel apparently.

      • They're excellent - no problems so far, but you need to pull out the back cover to access the vesa mounts. Apparently they use the same LG S-IPS WQHD panel as the Dell U2711 but without the anti-glare coating.

At ~$350 each they're extremely good value imo.

        • Cheers for the info - the price is amazing considering what you get locally.

  • Hm. Good price, but I'd probably go with 5xDavi's for $1800 or so before I'd go with 5xU2711's at $3145.

If you're only buying one though maybe it's worth the extra $ for piece of mind… from memory dell has a zero dead/bright pixel warranty on these? I mentioned Davi's since they are anti glare and there's an ebay seller offering "perfect pixel guarantee" but I doubt the quality of that guarantee.

  • Wow, was talking to a mate last night about whether I should go 2x 24" or 1x U2711, but I decided to go for 2x 24" due to the price of the U2711. Then bang, Ozbargain this morning, this deal, now I've purchased the 27" :D

    • Really depends on your workflow whether 2x or 1x is better.

I was dual-screening with the Dell U2412M but found it a pain in the neck (literally) as I was looking at one monitor and typing up on another. That's why I've decided 1 big monitor is better for me.

But I know others whose workflow involves working on 1 monitor and having background apps (e.g. Outlook or Bloomberg) on another who love dual-screening. That's 'cause they use the second monitor as a container for apps that they infrequently look at.

I bought last Friday the U2412 for $279. All I had to do is chat online and ask if they could do me a deal on the U2412 for $279 (as the deal has been on and off few times throughout the start of the year). They were happy to do the price, sent an invoice and ordered it.

    • True that. Dell reps are usually happy to bend the norm to make the sales.
Sales people actually doing work!! Who woulda thunk it!

  • Hi Guys, I'm a bit noob when it comes to these monitors. Putting price and screen estate aside, is the 24" ultrasharp the same panel as the 27: ultrasharp?

    • +1

      Short answer: No.

The U2412 uses a 6 bit e-ips panel, whereas the U2711 uses an 8 bit h-ips panel. If you look back to the earlier threads, or the various threads on Whirlpool you will find a lengthy discussion of the merits of the two monitors.

      • thanks MadMax.

For competitive online gaming, FPS, would you be putting yourself at a disadvantage with the average 30ms input lag? I remember a time when I was considering a 22/24" (3 years ago) with 4-8ms which was considered to be an obscene lag for this very purpose.

    • +1

Which monitor are you looking at? The 3 models there have 5,6 and 8ms response times. I personally have the 27" monitor and it's awesome. 2560x1440 is fantastic.

      • I'm not 100% clear but I have heard this before and my understanding is that the difference here is that your PC/GFX card sends the buffer image/frame to the monitor which has it's own internals for controlling brightness, sharpness settings, input to display etc it's this delay of processing hes referencing -before- it is then passed to the actual physical LCD panel [that then has it's own (for example) 8ms response to display/switch or refresh the image].

So monitors (basically all but especially TV's) that provide enhancements to the in-putted image colour, sharpness, rescaling etc that add extra 'input lag' or onboard processing overhead IN ADDITION to the actual LCD refresh rates.

    • The U2312M performs very well in respect to input lag. It's 1080p, so good for consoles and 16:9 movies, and is on sale from time to time from $180 delivered.

      • Just use an old 15" CRT monitor. Get 0 lag and they pwn :P

Would a girl prefer 3 inch or 8 inch even if it's 10ms slower :P

  • i like to get one but i still got my 2709 running!

  • Sigh, I keep holding off on a monitor upgrade because I want a magical 120hz 1440p monitor.

Anyone know if the quality of the panel and higher resolution is worth it for gaming?

    • if you want a high resolution monitor for gaming
You gotta make sure you got a high end VGA

  • Is there still a dell EPP for uni students?

    • yes but it does not stack, it overwrites the current discount - making it $764.15

      • What is the Dell EPP deal for uni students? Is there any more information available?

  • A lot of people complain about the Anti-Glare Coating on the UltraSharp models, which I was considering purchasing for a while. Can anyone confirm whether its that big of a deal? They are damned good monitors, that aside.

    • +1

I'm on a U2312 which has the same anti-glare coating as the other models, and I can only really notice it if I'm trying to. I'd say go for it.

    • +1

I have the U2412M's and haven't had any problems with the anti-glare coating. It works great and doesn't get in the way.

  • is the u2412m good for xbox 360? cheers

  • How big of a difference is the 30" from the 27"?

  • link doesnt work

    • does now! woo

    • does now! woo

  • Anyone have any experience with the ST2420L? Looking for a cheaper monitor at around this price point, any thoughts on it?

    • ST2420L (and the 23" ST2320L too) are rubbish. From my experience with them:

The colour accuracy is rubbish (even after extensive calibration you can get nowhere near accurate)
The viewing angles (both horizontal and vertical) are terrible
      The glossy bezel is distracting
The touch buttons are annoying (no backlight on the buttons so it's hard to find them in the dark)
The touch buttons sometimes stop responding and you have to unplug the monitor to get them working again
The stand is useless and can't even rotate.

IMO, the ST2420L's are poor value even on special. I bought 2 of the ST2420L monitors and sold them 1 week later, replacing them with the U2412M Ultrasharps mentioned in this post. The Ultrasharps are definitely worth the money :)

  • Thanks to the OP!

Just picked up a U2711. Lets hope this works on my i5-2500 set up.
