Bookworld vs Amazon Who Wins - We Already Know ...

As an experiment I tried but failed - no real surprise …

So about a week ago I saw a book I wanted at Bookworld for $54 AUD. At Amazon including shipping it would have cost me $48 ( I had it in my shipping cart). Cool I can use the Bookworld price guarantee:

At Bookworld we know how to beat the big kids at their own game, by offering you the most competitive prices.

In fact we’re so confident that we can beat them, we’ve even given it a name - it’s called the Bookworld Price Guarantee, and it guarantees we’ll beat Amazon by 10%, every time.

We might not be the world's largest internet company or have fancy drones delivering your books (yet), but we can offer you the most competitive prices in Australia.

Which means you’ll have more money to spend on the books you love (nudge nudge), at Australia’s biggest bookstore (that's us!).

(B***S***)

I kind of knew this wouldn't work, and sure enough it didn't. A few days after placing my order and submitting my claim I received an email declining my claim stating my book price was $38 USD on Amazon (It was $29 USD) and postage was $12.50 USD (It was $12.50 AUD). What the???

So I wrote to Bookworld with Booko.com.au prices asking where they got their so called prices from. They replied the next day stating they don't use Booko for these claims(hey I supplied it as evidence but whatever) but they felt bad for me and gave a 20% discount voucher for my next order. That's not the point!

So I sent Bookworld an image from camelcamelcamel.com which shows on the day I bought the book the Amazon price was $29 USD and since the books release (late Sept) it has never been priced higher than $34.50 USD so where the heck did $38 USD come from? (not to mention the bogus shipping cost they made up). I am yet to hear from them ….

So much for:

The computation was based only the information you provided including the Amazon price which was accurate at the time when we checked the link. We base all our computations only at the time the item was purchased and not after.

Hey I knew the offer was dodge to begin with - Buy from us then make your claim - yeah right, like you really going to honour that unless you value my custom - I guess they don't value it …

So if anyone has had any luck I would be interested to hear, otherwise a few words of warning for anyone thinking this so called Bookworld offer might be a way to save a few bucks …

Doesn't look like Bookworld can beat the big kids, but they can beat a little kid like me :( Oh the humanity

  • Have you tried https://booko.com.au/ ?

  • Oh yeah - Booko is fantastic. I actually used it to realise Amazon was the cheapest but Bookworld only $6 more expensive. I thought it worth the risk and try and see how their price match policy goes - it goes not to good as it happens but no real surprise … I was prepared to loose $6 to see how it goes so I guess I'm not a true OzBargainer …

    • Whoops just saw you mentioned booko in your post…

I think it needs a TL;DR, a bit too long for my attention spam :)

  • Yeah - sorry for the long winded post. Its nothing compared to the 2 emails I sent Bookworld. If I am not going to get the $10 they owe me I'll see how I go wasting $10 worth (or more) of their time, maybe ACCC next and see if Bookworld are happy to deal with them? :)

  • Return the book and buy it cheaper from amazon. Look for there returns policy. Although they may have some catch in that policy too.

    • For $6 I doubt returning and waiting is worth it (not that it has arrived yet mind).
No my biggest disapointment is their unwillingness to honour their policy and to that end seemingly making up facts so they don't have to honour it. No real surprise but not a good customer experience.

  • Today Bookworld has honour "the deal" after I resent my camelcamelcamel price comparison email again last night. At the end of the day they refunded me $6.12 which is pretty much the price difference but at least they came to the party eventually … I doubt I will try and use their offer in the future though - it's simply too much effort.

  • Hello there people, is there any current promo code for book world that you don't mind sharing? I'm looking to buy, but if no code, I would go to amazon! Thanks in advance, oldrocko
