For $597, you can get a dozen reds that will be better than Grange.

After reading an article about wine in general and grange in particular I thought that $500 can be spent elsewhere. You never know if you get a good bottle or not.

  • Had a bottle of Grange when it was a reasonable price last century (celebrating a win on the neddies with a mate) and I can tell you it was an absolute cracker. We even drank the dregs. A memorable experience even for plebs like us. From what I've read I doubt very much what Sergey says is true unless it has not been stored properly (same goes for any wine) but I agree withn JVs sentiment, if not his statement. The diff between a good $30 bottle eg Henschke Henry 7 and Grange isn't an order of magnitude for my uncultured palate. Cellaring/ageing also helps significantly for the right wine. We had a cheap ($10) Penfolds which had been stored under the house for 8 years or so and it was as good as a $90 Tyrells red I recently bought on OzB (for under $30 iirc). If the OzB one matures as well it's going to be something in 4 or 5 years time assuming it lasts that long.
