Are There Any New 2-3TB Hard Drives to Avoid Buying Right Now?

Hey all, about to retire my 2Tb internal HDD and replace with a new unit.

What are people choosing for a balance of price vs reliability for storage (movies/music etc, nothing critical) at the moment? I'm thinking a WD Green based on price alone - but it's been a while since I bought a new HDD and was wondering if there any I should avoid.

If you don't need an increase in storage space, keep your current 2TB HDD and get another 2TB HDD and do a RAID 1.

There aren't any particularly unreliable drive manufacturers as such. Some people here hate Seagate and will say they are the most unreliable…etc. But there hasn't been any sort of scientific study to prove this. No, Backblaze blog isn't a scientific study.

It really just comes down to luck and your usage pattern. If you're unlucky, you might end up with a dud, if you do lots of read and writes, you'll wear out your drive faster.

Don't forget that hard drive failures are kind of parabolic (convex), it goes down initially, as the dud drives will all fail and then the failure rates are quite low until you start reaching the end of its life cycle.

"No, Backblaze blog isn't a scientific study"

True, but it's pretty damning evidence nonetheless… Most people already feel Seagate are unreliable, and that article only reinforces it.

Interestingly, the article states the company still prefers Seagates as they're very cheap. They just gotta make sure they bin 'em after 1 year! haha

Whilst this isn't scientific either, it gives a well rounded view of the other side of the story, much better than I can explain it:

Yeah, except you can make a vague 'study' about anything and provide 'damning' evidence.

For the reference, I don't even use Seagate drives, I use WD. But that's just because I've bought two WDs that were cheap to start off with and I've just been buying them since to get matching drives. I just don't think there's any hard evidence to support any of the HDD manufacturers over the other.

        • Great reads both, thanks!

        • externals not too sure about now

arent they all 1yr warranty? and while i like seagate expansions they dont seem to last long in their original OEM casing

i have 4 expansions in a microserver and they are fine there

but i been looking into 3tb drives and this is what i found…

wdc green is 5,400rpm, slow and useless in a nas, i wouldnt buy them

seagate barracuda is 7,200, fast but only 2yr warranty

          toshiba is 7,200 but 3 yrs… i bought 4 toshibas

seagate would be a good 2nd choice but with 1 yr less warranty??? hmmm
