People Who DON'T Buy Combos at a Fast-Food Chain

The other day when I was at KFC, lining up to purchase 9 for $9.95, a man wanted to buy 5 pieces of chicken and a large chips.

The cashier punched in the order and asked for around $18.00 for 5 pieces of chicken and a large chips. The man handed over the cash without a second thought.

I was gob-smacked because instead of ordering items separately, he could have gotten either;
a) 9 for 9.95 + Large Chips ($13.00+)
b) Paid an extra $1.95 and got the streetwise combo (more chicken, more chips, dips, nuggets etc…)
c) Gone for a 3 piece feed, upsize for large chips, buy an extra chicken and save $2.00

But it's not just THIS incident alone that has caused me to ponder the question of 'What's More Important?' I have a colleague who would rather pay $11 for 3 pieces of chicken and a drink instead of paying the same for a 3 piece feed because he "doesn't want the rest".

Are a majority of people like this stranger or my colleague? Have you seen any similar situations?

What's More Important? to you when a couple of dollar's are at stake.

Although I would always buy the more for less option I can see the theory behind not behind food just to throw in the bin. There is so much food wasted I guess it makes sense.

  • While I agree you should only buy what you want to eat, it makes no sense to pay more for less product, and not take advantage of combo deals when they might get you close to (or above) the quantity and type of foods/drinks you were after in the first place.

That said, it's their money I guess.

I dislike so many of the combos that include mashed potato and gravy because I can't stand that slop and feel like I'm paying for it anyway - even though it is basically chucked in for free with the other stuff.
    Maybe that's part of it.

Ask for a swap to something like chips or just gravy.

    • Ask to swap to coleslaw.

  • I usually save money and try get something that I want.

For KFC I usually spend over $5 but not too much so I can't use the feedback thing which gives a free chips and drink.

    (Mainly I get 6 wicked wings = $5.95)

Before I knew about the $5 minimum spend, I asked for a large chips and ended up adding a random sauce for $1.00 :(

  • Why would you ever get less for more? I just save the rest for later on in the day. I'll just microwave the remaining pieces when I get home for a quick pre-dinner or something.

  • Woolworths occasionally has offers whereby two items bought together are cheaper than one.

I was at the checkout once when the cashier mentioned to the chap in front of me that the item that was scanning at $5.50 was on special for 2-for-$4 and would he like to grab a second one. He curtly responded with, "No thank you, I only need one!" I couldn't believe it.

    • I guess Woolworths was trying to get rid of stock and whenever someone bought only one they would tell them and most people would just buy a extra one.
Some stuff you only need one as a lot of the time anything on special will expired very soon.

      • It wasn't short dated, was just one of their random weekly specials

Id go the cheaper route but ask them to exclude the unwanted items..

    • I like this idea, you buy a pack and just say I don't want this and that
