Good prices. Each model offers a difference in available features that's quite a large jump depending on how much of a technical photographer you are. For some, the mk1 is more than sufficient whilst for others, they'll need the mk3.

But at the end of the day, remember that the RX100 commands such a high price because it offers so much in a compact design and there is so little competition out there.

  • Any model will take great photos, the Carl zeiss optics are first rate.

The MK 3 has a viewfinder and a faster lens on the long end by sacrificing some zoom but I would take that if possible. If stretched for budget go the MK 1.

  • I really would like to get with viewfinder function on RX100, but MK3 is out of my budget and hard to fine one optional viewfinder for MK1 :-(

I got the original RX100 when they were just released, paid around $630 for a grey import. Even at that price it is a great camera, at this price it is a steal.

It's the kind of camera that can take great photos on 'auto' settings, but also allows people who know a bit about photography to muck around with the various settings that you'd typically find on a DSLR.

I know a number of photographers who have one of these as their 'portable backup' camera, when they don't want to lug around their monster camera/battery pack/assortment of lens.

  • the jump from 1 to 2 is worth

    • is worth $180?

    • Yes to me it's worth it. Exmor-R sensor vs only Exmor for an extra sensitivity and also ability to attach an external EVF.

  • Great find…

Forgot this now - can we claim trs for things from kogan?

    • No TRS.

I bought an RX100m2 earlier this year for underwater photography (plus an underwater housing). It is an awesome camera both underwater and on land. Easy to switch between manual, semi-manual and automatic settings. The autofocus is amazingly fast. Plus it can take RAW photos.

Forget DSLR, this compact camera can go everywhere and it fits in your pocket.

    • rinco, Can I ask which housing you are using for the Rx100m2?? Going to Hawaii and would love to use housing for under water photography!

  • I would personally go for mk3 because of the lens as you'll get better low light pics (handheld) across the zoom range if money is not an issue. That is quite an expensive lens if you were to buy that seperate for a dslr.

Otherwise even the basic model is quite decent for the price. F 1.8 at wide angle is still very useful for low light hand held photography.

  • This camera is magnificent. Highly rate it. Fantastic for anyone who wants SLR quality (very close to) in a compact.
