Pocket Wi-Fi, Thoughts?

Hi all,

I have some oversea guests next month and is looking at a portable wifi solution.

I have done some research and Telstra 4G My Pocket Wi-Fi Plus @ $79 + 3GB of data to use in Australia within 30 days seems like a good deal to me.

I think I can re-use the device with Amaysim data pack ($99.90 for 10GB within 365 days) later by changing the SIM card.

What do you guys think of my strategy? Tips welcomed.

  • How many are they using the wifi thingo? If its just 1-2 might come out cheaper to buy a local sim and use the data of that, or if youve got a lot of data and will be with your guests most of the time then you can share your data with them. 2 people but I also need to setup an Internet TV in the hotel room for them when I'm not around. So I have to consider a data pack as it is cheaper than hotel wifi.

  • Check that the Telstra one does not remain locked to Telstra SIMs after the 30 days - Amaysim is in the Optus camp so may not work in the Pocket Wi-Fi after the 30 days. The ALDI data SIM is Telstra and OK valuealso.

    • That is great info, will check ALDI SIM out. Thanks debo.

  • Woolworths has the Telstra USB + Wifi dongle for $19.50 this week.

    Telstra 3G USB+WI-FI

    • 1GB I 30 days expiry to use within Australia
    • Connect up to 5 Wi-Fi devices.

I would imagine you could plug it into any usb wall port charger if no one is using a laptop (however I am not completely sure of this). It would be locked to Telstra as well but this guy: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167230 can unlock it for $12. I bought one this morning but haven't tried it / or tried the unlock yet.

Its only 3g but thats all you will get from amaysim anyway.

  • why not start with the Target deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167125
    Elite MF60 Wi-Fi Prepaid Modem + 1GB Data $15 starts tomorrow.

I don't know how easy that one is to unlock but would like to know since I'm planning on grabbing one.

    • I just unlocked the mf70 via dc unlocker, it was $10 and fairly easy.
