Melbourne Myki Top up - AmEx Shop Small Promo

Figured I'd start this thread to see if anybody managed to find anywhere which works.
Myki isn't as mature as Sydney Opal so there many not be as many places which offer top ups via Amex.

  • On this same topic of Myki top ups, is there anyway we can get a discount? There's not many places that do paywave, perhaps pre-paid debit cards bought with 5% paywave?

Just pay with paypass/paywave for 5% off any any 7/11

  • Doesnt 7-11 accept both Amex and paypass?

I know I used to top up myki with Amex 18months ago… and I'm sure I've used paypass there too.

    • Yes 7-11 does accept Amex, topped up a few weeks ago using Amex. Just not sure if they are part of the shop small offer though.

      • They not

Myki isn't as mature as Sydney Opal

    Mr Wiki states

The Opal card was officially launched as a trial in December 2012

After field testing, the Melbourne metropolitan roll-out of myki began on 29 December 2009

But you are probably still right.
    And another state election.
    Sigh

  • search using post code and look for newsagency ( can be part of shopsmall@amex) as well

    • Thanks for sharing…did you get the cash back instantly?

    • "$20 452 Little Collins St (Daily news) $20 Top up, $10 cash back"

This one claimed their POS terminal was no longer working with Amex.

      • They told me last wednesday that they recently changed POS terminal and Amex will work within a few more days…. damn them they must have caught on

Okay found one that works - finally!

Melbourne Convenience Store - 327 Elizabeth Street (between Little Lonsdale and La Trobe).

Added $20 Myki no problem tonight and no surcharge. Going back tomorrow with another card.

          Got the confirmation email.

        • I went in on the 17th and they said it sometimes worked, sometimes not. I tried, it seemed to work, I got the myki credit… but no confirmation email from Amex and no charge has ever appeared on my card for the transaction at all. Odd.

        • @gadgetguy:
Thank you. I just went to 327 Elizabeth St and there were no issues at all. $20 myki, no surcharge, no reluctance (unlike Swanston St Lotto), email received. If they can guarantee that they can use paypass (for ING 2%), I would definitely return and give them more business.

i also used Swanston St Lotto, 227 Collins st (Shop 3) - $20 Myki money, $10 cash back.

You can search keywords like "lotto" or newsagency" etc

    • 3% surcharge applied on mine

      • He actually forgot to apply the 3% surcharge. He asked if i was buying anythinhg else to "make up" the surcharge. So i gave him 60c in change.

        • 4% on mine

        • @elyobo:

          Bastards! Now it's 5%! $21!

The guy in front of me had two Amex cards too. Amex emails received straight away.

          Guy shopkeeper was nice though

    • Went to the Swanston St Lotto.
The chinese guy there was pretty rude.

I wanted to do 2x $20 transactions, the guy goes "You can only do one, I don't have enough time to do 2, It is a busy day, come back later"…

Funny thing was, there was nobody even behind me or in the shop… it must have been super busy!….

      • haha yeah totally. Chinese guy was going off at me for just 1 transaction.
He wasn't happy at all for some unknown reason

      • Same thing happened to me. Wasn't happy at all.

        • The lady (i think is the old man's wife) is better, she doesn't give you the stink eye.

Supanews @Chadstone accept amex no surcharge.

    • thanks, i tried there last night. Got the email confirmation.

  • Went to the Swanston St Lotto, paid extra 80c for 20$ MYKI money.
    waiting for 10$ refund

    • Yeah, I got a 4% surcharge there too. Bet that old guy is wondering why the hell everyone is coming in buying myki with amex all of a sudden :D

    • Went back to Swanston St Lotto, this time the man charged me $1 per $20 top up…. Topped up $100. He wasn't as grumpy this time round thou, but I won't be going back there. I will try the Elisabeth St convenience store today.

      • I think he's being a positively economic man and has realised the demand for AMEX has shot up, so why not increase the surcharge?

  • Harbourtown Pharmacy also works. No surcharge.

    • where is that ?

      can't find it here http://harbourtownmelbourne.com.au/directory.html

      unless it's not @Harbour Town ?

      • Its in Docklands.

The official name on the receipt is Victoria Harbour Pharmacy and News, 66 Merchant Street.

        Its right opposite Woolworths.

        • oic. Thanks for the info!

  • Southgate News and Lotto, no surcharge, got email confirmation. It happens to be right by my work, but if you're having trouble finding it it's right top, up the back, near the entrance to the Herald (HWT) building in Southgate mall.

  • All of mine are confirmed working. Also got a couple of pleasant surprises buying rounds of beer!

  • I can confirm that Daily News On Little Collins no longer accepts Amex

  • Confirm worked on Elizabeth St convenience store! No surcharge.
