Shortage of Eggs in Perth?

I was at my local Asian grocer today, which is as big as an average IGA/Aldi store.

I've been going there for more than 2 years and have always been able to buy fresh WA laid eggs. Usually $2.99 for a 600g dozen or $3.29 for a 700g dozen.

Today when I went there, they were selling a dozen of 700g eggs for $2.50, but they were from Gippsland, Victoria. They also had an expiry date of 21st November, which means they aren't that fresh and have obviously been freighted and stored. The only WA laid eggs I could find were free range and almost double the price.

Does anyone know if there's genuinely a shortage of WA eggs, or is this particular supermarket just being stingy and sourcing the cheapest eggs they can find whilst at the same time not supporting local egg producers?

  • Don't know where you are in Perth - we're in the hills & always go to the egg farm in Maida Vale - cost is $7.00 for (30) fresh farm eggs, been going there for years - never had a problem. We never buy from a supermarket.

    • Whats the address or can you pm me? cheers

    • Interested too. Whereabouts in Maida Vale? Only found egg farms in Swan valley and Palmyra in Google. Thanks.

It is called Crosilva Poultry Farm. 255, Midland Road, Hazelmere. ( although we've always thought it was Maida Vale). Should you come from Kalamunda Road - turn left into Midland Road & it's apx. 1 km. on the left hand side - will have a sign outside situated by their gate.Enjoy.

        • This place is so gonna get ozbargained. :)

@lenlynn: It's open from 8.00am - 2.00pm Mon-Fri. & ( I believe but don't neg. me on it ) 8.00am- 12 noon on Sat.You'll never shop for eggs anywhere else again. Would recommend that you take your own cartons to put them in though as should you buy 30 they come in a large wobbly tray which you have to drive home carefully with before taking them in the house !

What do you mean by 'local', they're still Australian eggs.

What do you mean by 'local'

      Somewhere less than 3600km away?

      • They'll never understand over there…

Stingy is refusing to pay an extra 8c an egg for free range.

      You're on Ozbargain.

And free range is not always "free range".

Thanks, I'd never have known either "fact" without your advice

Very few are free range. Most are purchased in bulk @ $1 doz from regular producers placed in free range cartons and sold at ridiculous prices.
Check ACCC for info on the few that have been prosecuted for this.

The sad fact is that most states require millions of eggs per day.
Little Mary finds it difficult to skip through the open paddocks with her basket and collect that many every day. Free range supporters see it as being that way…

The free range fans that say they can taste the difference are eating regular eggs 95% of the time.

BTW… The pics shown on tv depicting cruelty are not from Australian producers. Aust producers are inspected by the RSPCA. It is a scam to make a massive profit and people fall for it.

Free range fans should visit a regular commercial producer and see the facts for themselves and stop being sucked in by the con artists behind this scam.

The commercial producer hens that I have seen coming out of the farms after their 18 mth production cycle are healthier than most backyard hens.

I've read some nonsense in my time but yours is hard to beat I'll give you that. Deja vu, or was it a different poster who was put in his place on another Ozb forum on eggs? Either way your opinion reflects your total lack of knowledge of egg farming practices in this country. Egg substitution is standard practice? Free range eggs are laid in paddocks? Australian battery hens are well looked after and haven't been video'd? You could hardly be MORE wrong if you were born yesterday. Sure there are shonks as we saw in WA not long ago - just as there are fools who will swallow any opinion on the internet - but there are plenty of legit free range and barn egg producers in this country. A lot of work still needs to be done to fix the industry's practices but ultimately it's only lack of political guts which has stopped the phasing out of battery egg production in Australia.

Anyone who wants to acquaint themsleves with facts and get a true picture of egg farming in this country need only spend 15 minutes googling and reading some reliable commentary.

Yes, as I suspected Xwyolap, you rolled out the same garbage here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/reply/164673/2296070

  • cool

  • is this particular supermarket just being stingy a typical business and sourcing the cheapest eggs they can find

Yep. I'd say it is similar to milk, bread, fruit, veg you find at other supermarkets which come from miles away.

    not supporting local egg producers

They are still supporting them but they aren't going to make a loss whilst doing so.
