My Wishlist of 2015

Hello Oz Bargainers,

I thought I would like to share my wishlist which is mostly based on my frustration of day to day situation.

1)Better Traffic - Its getting worse even with the multi million dollar upgrades of highway, I just can't understand for a toll highway which you pay believing that you with get a faster, better, smoother access which this is not the case in Sydney especially certain hours. Sometimes you believe the cause its accident but strangely as the traffic starts moving you realize that its just the car lining up due to something (I still can't understand there is no traffic lights)
- slow drivers on the fastlane (hate it)
- bicycle riders on peak time (usually non highway)
- Trucks with open goods on the back (which sometimes you see things on the highway and you stay a distance which you might worry a sudden break or humb will cause the goods flying at ya.

2)Schools with care: I have kids so its worrisome when you see your kids who go to school and come back tanned like they went to the beach.
- little sun smart or guide for the kids
- seen teacher wearing shades, hat and standing in the shade while a class of students (young kids) in the field (seriously?) If you know that too much sun is bad for the skin (skin cancer) you would do it to the kids? sorry to say but really brainless people.
- UV in australia can be very high at certain days which i only get it on BOM which I am sure a lot of adults would have shades on, and maybe a 50% ratio of people not aware of it (I have sensitive eyes as it really hurts my eyes without shades outside) but young kids running around the field not aware or understand about it? Thats like putting fresh water fish in the sea.

3)Cleanliness - I myself is not a super clean person however there is an extent when you sort of see things.
- throwing things out of a car> could be from a gangster looking, loud pounding music, sportscar lookalike muffler adjusted driver to a luxury german, sportscar that you can usually admire. These people just throw things our of their car - I have seen beer bottles in front of my house (sorry to hear that your rubbish bin at home is too clean to throw), maccas out of the car sometimes in front of my house, tissues, plastic bags, can drinks. I usually comment this only happens in low income areas with little of care but I take it all back I been seeing not only the young, couple, rich, freely throwing stuff right in front of my car. Sigh my mum was right to say that Sydney use to look much better 20 years ago and its true its becoming a filthy looking place with people dumping, spitting without care at all. Its hard to change a person's habit as its like a DNA built in when its embedded but dun let your kids repeat your mistake as they will be living in a dump hole in a not so distant future.
- We should have a recycling day where everyone takes part in cleaning your neighbourhood

4) MAGLEV Train! (500km per hour, thats less than 3 hrs to gold coast) - I recently drove 12 hrs to gold coast for a holiday, it was great scenery was fantastic, drivers communicating with blinkers was awesome (lol I sort of save 10s of drivers with my continuous blinkers warning), all of this is great but not so if you are driving by yourself. It would be nice to have a speedy train to travel in a few hours which you can still capture the beauty of the scenery. Just in case why not plane? I sort of dislike flying and heights. As long as the contract is not outsourced to the chinese , no offense but for the better and safety of the people.

5)Theme Parks - where is the coming soon Sydney theme parks (besides the yearly easter show which I am still puzzled why people will pay high prices for entry and pay again later on for show bags, rides, food and etc.
- I really prefer to have a dreamworld, seaworld, movieworld, anime world or game world , sega world , ghibli world which is own by disneyland, disneyland in sydney guess that wont be happening anytime soon.

6)Residential Safety - I can understand it happens in any part of the world, but wouldn't it be great to live in once upon a time in sydney which your front door can be left open, kids wondering around the front yard, going to work without a worry or sleeping in peace at night. When there is high illegal migration, unemployment, poor education,
- I sometimes wonder what does these people do during the workdays if they do not have a job and they are wondering around in their car (which i do see alot and sometimes can be worrisome for people with the mentality of short cut in earning fast cash) e.g. Recently at night I could actually hear the slowing down of the vehicles as if they are slowing down to look at your property.
- Great to have a community boom gate that stops car coming through your area e.g. 12am to 6am?

Its a simply logic if there is no job = no money = desperation = vices = jail time (if caught)

7) NBN - Please start in my area soon * thanks to the 1st comment :)

8) VIDEOGAMES - I have too many……Dear sony, nintendo microsoft since you are the major console maker. Let me help you with a marketing tip, why the hell would you put an online game pricing more expensive than your retailers have price them on the physical disc? Majority of gamers would like to have them on Disc due to collection, packaging, unable to download the game due to internet restrictions such as quota, speed and etc, but alot out there I really mean a huge majority gamers like me are running out of space and thinking probably its best just to have an account and with games that you can access on any console. Selling it cheaper like steam will make you more money than trying to sell it at full retail of a disc copy, in fact a Mario $49.99 will sell more copies than you can ever dream of vs a $89.99 nintendo wii u disc.
- A better fighting game for PS4 and Xbox One anytime soon?

Its a matter of time when there is no need of discs or consoles and it can run on any television/computer with an emulator. Maybe with a virtual headset, glove and hybrid game pad that talks back to you….hmm maybe I should be in the video game industry.

9) Australia for Australians.
Australia is huge, let them come…..
Let me explain this one, I think its quite obvious that most Australians should know that Australian property, company is mostly not own by Australians?
E.g most of this property boom is great for the real estate, government taxes and etc, majority are own by the rich chinese (not the 1 million dollar house but the multi million dollar houses), farms, livestock, dairy products are getting own by more foreign companies.
Heard of people saying its just too expensive to live in Sydney anymore I am moving north….guess what thats just a temp solution cause its a matter of time when they buy the North coast area so the outback in Ayers Rock to move to next? Scores of farms being bought by the chinese (I believe its distributed to the chinese government, rich elite) so they have a separate food stock from the ones they are feeding the rest of the majority population in their country (isn't that awesome for a communist country in disguise) but that is not the main discussion.

Its a matter of time when you see that majority of products is not made in Australia (e.g try biscuits and look at where they are made from) My choices are getting less and less everytime I look at the food shelf…it is again a matter of time when a majority of the products are made off shore, imported offshore, lifestock and dairy farm not enough to supply to local community hence price hike and more issues to come.

I used to joke with my wife that we might need to buy an extra property for our kids as it will be too expensive when they grow up and hopefully graduate in 20 years….I don't think its even possible for us to buy any more property with the rate its going up. Well the plus point is they get to live with us when they turn adults, I am a traditional family person :)

and
I believe there is not enough opportunity for brilliant australians to have their product marketed by Australians (lack of venture capitalist) so where do they go? US.

I have more but I will stick with my 9

What is your wishlist :)

Fix the youth unemployment issues — roughly a third of university graduates can't find a full time job. Abbott gov: Plug the 457 visa loophole. Stop businesses from importing workers from overseas.

Also, Malcolm Turnbull: FTTP over FTTN, please. Fiber cable is not expensive.

  • As a youth, employment is importan , but more important is housing cost.

I've saved up for a deposit for a house for a while now, being financial responsible, I didn't want to go wih just 5% down, opting to save up to 20% and not need mortgage insurance.

In this time of saving, housing has gone up by so much, the amount extra saved, won't cover the increase in price.

    • That's due to the increased demand, foreign investors particularly Chinese are looking to put their money here to mitigate the economic and political risk of having it tied up in the People's Republic.

Demonstrating the buying power of cashed-up Chinese investors, Wang says Australia is popular because property prices are perceived as "cheap" compared to what is available in the big cities in China.

Australia also has lower home loan deposit requirements compared to China, where banks often require around one-quarter of the property's value upfront, amid tightening lending conditions

I think a lot of your list is wishful thinking or unrealistic, requiring a lot of grassroots change over long periods of time. This is what I think of the things you've listed:

1)Better Traffic - Its getting worse even with the multi million dollar upgrades of highway, I just can't understand for a toll highway which you pay believing that you with get a faster, better, smoother access which this is not the case in Sydney especially certain hours. Sometimes you believe the cause its accident but strangely as the traffic starts moving you realize that its just the car lining up due to something (I still can't understand there is no traffic lights)

This isn't unreasonable, but Sydney and Melbourne are reaching peak capacity. You might not be aware that Sydney and Melbourne are some of the largest, most densely populated cities in the world. If you ever go to the US, you'd realise that most of the cities there are smaller than Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney is around the size of LA, the second largest city in the US, Melbourne, of course, not too much smaller than Sydney.

The government wants us to believe that the issue is roads and transport because they are lazy, but it's not. The issue is overcrowding. When you have people living within a 50-60km radius or even greater, all heading into the city for work in the morning, no matter what the mode of transport is, whether it is public transport or cars, there is going to be siginificant overcrowding.

The only solution to this is to significantly overhaul the transport system, i.e. similar to New York or London, or the alternative is to adopt a satellite approach where offices start popping up in suburban ares rather than having everyone flock to the CBD. The transport architecture of Melbourne and Sydney is a "star" system, not too different to lazy Californian cities with much less population than Melb/Syd.

3)Cleanliness - I myself is not a super clean person however there is an extent when you sort of see things.

That's a cultural problem because even though we have littering laws in Australia, they are hardly enforced and people don't get in trouble for littering or causing a mess. If you go to Singapore, you'll see what happens when littering laws are actually enforced.

    4) Bullet Train, 5)Theme Parks

Not going to happen in Australia due to the very large land mass. Perhaps a fast rail from Melbourne to Sydney and back is viable, but nowhere else in Australia would have the passenger capacity to sustain this sort of network. Many people cite examples from Asia, e.g. Tokyo and the like, without realising that cities there are much more dense than in Australia.

Similar to the Theme Parks argument, Theme Parks are massive capital investments for companies who are only going to build them at holiday destinations. Whilst a lot of people do head to Sydney for holidays, they're not the typical Theme Park crowd. Either way, Gold Coast has plenty, only a 1.5 hour flight or so from Sydney, you can head up for a few days and head back easily.

How high is the illegal migration, or are you just repeating what Abbott says without actually looking into the issue yourself. I think this very much depends on the area though, there are many areas in Australia where you can sleep in peace at night…etc.

    9) Australia for Australians.

Whilst I agree that there might be some emotional argument for this whole "Australia for Australians" debate, I think you need to have a think about the greater issue of foreign investments and the pros and cons it has for Australian industry. The simple truth is, it seems like you're confusing several topics here and not quite grasping the issues which are at play. First of all, the issue of commercial investment, property investment and manufacturing are all different issues which have different rationales and arguments.

    I'll address this point first:

Its a matter of time when you see that majority of products is not made in Australia (e.g try biscuits and look at where they are made from) My choices are getting less and less everytime I look at the food shelf…it is again a matter of time when a majority of the products are made off shore, imported offshore, lifestock and dairy farm not enough to supply to local community hence price hike and more issues to come.

This has nothing to do with investment, Chinese people buying property in Australia or the lack of venture capitalists in Australia. The problem at play here is the insanely high labor costs in Australia. Believe it or not, Australia has one of the highest production costs in the world - this comes from a variety of factors including expensive labor, expensive land and expensive utility costs - e.g. electricity. The reason why labor is moving offshore is because it's simply cheaper. It's hardly a bad deal for you either, you're paying less for your generic biscuits because production is moved offshore. Perhaps there is some emotional attachment to Australian manufacturing, but the sooner Australians wake up and realise that Australia needs to move to an information economy, the better. The car industry was subsidised by the government for years…etc. Australia simply cannot compete with China and other countries in manufacturing.

Now, I'll address the issue of Chinese investment in Australia:

You're forgetting the issue that for every loser, there's often a winner. With the increase in Chinese interest in Australia, you are correct, property prices are increasing, but people often have a short memory, look at the time series plot of property prices going up over the short term past and it's a very natural exponential increase (as it should be). So Chinese investment doesn't actually have the disastrous effects you seem to claim. How many properties are owned by Chinese investors? Not many. Take a walk down your street, how many of those houses are owned by the Chinese? Not many.

Of course, you have to realise that for every loser (those trying to enter the property market), there are winners as well. If you own a house, your house would have had a nice increase in value due to increased investment. Yet, I don't see you considering that as a positive at all, that's because it's easy to overlook the benefits of others' actions, but easy to complain when they don't suit our needs. That's not how we should approach analysing complex issues such as foreign investment.

I believe there is not enough opportunity for brilliant australians to have their product marketed by Australians (lack of venture capitalist) so where do they go? US.

What do you mean by marketed? The issue here is lack of investment in Australia and you were just complaining about excessive investment just a couple of minutes ago. In order to have Australian ideas count in the real world, there needs to be foreign investment in Australia or those people would all escape to the US, which has a much stronger venture capitalist scene.

This is the genuine problem with most Australians - too many are resistant to foreign investment, thinking "ohhh, the Chinese are going to take over the world" and then on the same note, complain about how Australia is suffering from a lack of investment. The money has to come from somewhere and a lot of people don't realise that every time they go on the internet and buy something, they contribute to the massive current account deficit, which can only be fixed by foreign investment in Australia.
