      • I copied the 1080p files to the internal HDD and played them that way. They aren't playing properly though. I'm going to try a different hdmi cable now to see if it makes any difference

      • If the entire network is 802.11n it should stream 1080p over wireless without any buffering/frame dropping issues. The usual culprit is the router, is that n compatible? ;)

Somebody get StewBalls a new pen

    • here is one for you guys ;) http://www.screendoodle.com/index.htm, http://www.screendoodle.com/featured.htm (note: never used them before :)

      • Forget the pen, fetch me a sharp blade! ;)

A long weekend knowing my two players are in the back of some postie's van & I can't play with at least one just could be seppuku-worthy! :o

I have connected my 1TB WD Element to the Player and it picked up straight away. Tested some movies and my DIVX movies seems to play alrite. I downloaded some HD/Full HD clips from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/… and it played beatifully. Browsing through the internal HDD is quick. External HDD via USB is a bit slower. Hope you guys get yours new toy soon.

btw, the HDD is a WD one. 32MB cache. So I am happy. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=613

Thanks for the feedback. Now I must 'Stew' over not getting mine until next week.

  • Having tested the unit a bit further, I think I might be having issues with the hdmi cables. I might (stupidly?) go out and buy a new hdmi cable that's 1.3b certified. The cables I have are all 3 years old.
I couldn't get the unit to play some 1080P/60fps video footage. Maybe 30fps is the maximum it can do at 1080P?
The AW-N290 Wireless N USB Adapter is also pretty handy. I'm glad I bought it.

    • How did you go with the new cable? I think 1080P@60 is probably choking it.
That's higher than bluray specs. 1080i@60 or 1080P@30 should be okay.

      • The 2nd hdmi cable that I had lying around couldn't handle it either. I think you're right about 1080p/60 not being supported. I plugged my Sanyo Exacti HD handycam into my tv via hdmi and it played the footage just fine.

May I ask where did u buy the Astone wireless usb adapter?
I'm thinking of getting one too but not sure if i should only get the Astone one or any other generic one.

  • skycomp are selling this unit (with 808G) for $212 + $16 postage.

  • Mine arrived today. It looks alright - haven't been successful in connecting it to the wireless network yet though. It is a bit annoying setting it up if you need to change the wireless settings, as if you 'edit' the settings you need to re-enter everything.

    • I don't have the wireless card to test. However you should log a case with astone/forum and and ask them to incorporate this feature into the new firmware which hopefully being released very soon.

  • Got mine this morning..
Nice player. Not as big as I thought would be but very good.
Will update this arvo after I have setup and tested

  • I should be getting my by the time I go home tonight. Now it would be great if everybody here can find a non-Astone wireless adapter and try which ones do work or not.

I will be trying a generic brand tonight to see if it works.

    • It does not work with an "Open 303W" wireless adapter. You can tell if it works or not as it will pop up with a message saying "Wireless Plugin" (or something like that)

      • Also doesnt work with Netgear WG111

  • Got Mine today… I will test out a Belkin USB N1 Wireless Adaptor.

    • Belkin USB N1 Wireless Adaptor Did not worked. Get message straight away the device is not supported.

      • I ordered a astone wireless n from nscom.com.au

Check out my post on some research I have done on this device. Hope this heaps.

    • odd…..I could have sworn there was a response from astone to your post yesterday……not there now

      • You're right, there was a fairly lengthy reply by "Astone", but that has now been replaced by a much shorter one from "Admin"! ;)

  • Mine turned up on Tuesday, haven't had too much of a chance to play but I'm pretty happy at this point, local HDD play handled everything I threw at it without a hitch (incl mkv, mov & rmvb), and USB HDD is a snap!

The interface is probably a tiny bit more convoluted than I'd have hoped, but not much more so than my Mediagate 450HD that it's replacing, but on the plus side it's way faster!

I'm hoping to get it up on the network as a NAS in the next few days, so I'll test the streaming then both to and from the device. I've just ordered a wireless dongle from Crazy Stu as well, so there's more shenanigans in the pipeline in the near future too!

All in all though, I'm pretty happy with the purchase at this point! :)

    • The interface is a lot nicer looking with the 1.7beta2 firmware - but still the same basic structure. Looks more professional.
I couldn't get streaming to work over a wired network - the machine would just restart itself on every file I tried to play. Funnily enough it seems to work ok over wireless - though I had trouble connecting to the network with encryption turned on. Currently its sitting next to my router and streams ok over a g network, but it did a terrible job when it was at the opposite end of the house. I guess it would be better over n - but that would mean a new router which I didn't want to do until the final n spec came out. I might get another set of powerline pairs and run the wired network to it that way instead.

      • Cool, thanks, I'm downloading the fw update now….slowly! Dodgy file host! ;)

I'd be under the house or in the roof space with a roll of Cat5 if I were you dude, cheaper than powerline pairs! :)

        • I was going to do that once - even got a patch panel so I could do it all properly - but I got a set of powerline pairs so I could run the network out to the shed for my hubby (wireless didn't give a good enough signal and network cable was logistically difficult). Wireless covers most of the rest of the house pretty well for normal use, so I never got round to it. Kind of difficult to run the cable in my house anyway - router is upstairs front room - where I would like to put the device is downstairs back room. Powerline pair is a lot easier. Realistically - I'll probably just copy all the files locally anyway - which works ok on the wireless.

          • @laridae: Wow, any more like you at home? :) You set up a network for your hubby, all I get presented with by my GF is sundry items of high & low tech in various states of disrepair that apparently need to be fixed yesterday or sooner! It sure sounds like you don't need any real help in this area, but my other suggestion would be to try another router as an extender/AP/bridge! ;)

I just got my wireless dongle from Mentally Ill Stuart. I've now got all my shares off the PC streaming flawlessly over it; I haven't tried any 1080p though, I don't have any coz my TV only does 1080i, but 720p works a treat! I might download a couple of 1080p vids to test for curiousity's sake though! Next test will be the Samba shares streaming off the Astone to the network! ;)

  • How do you play ripped DVDs on the HD? The manual says it can play VOBs but it has trouble playing the full DVD. Anyone get this feature to work? Cheers

    • All my dvd rips are in iso format, which play perfectly, and the vobs I tested were discrete so maybe that's your issue, you might need the ifo to link it all together; but I'll throw a few ifo/vobs later & try them, you got me curious now, I'll try to report back on it! ;)

[edit] Update, video_ts folders created & tested with ifo/vob structure and working perfectly, both local and streamed over wireless!

Make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest version (v.1.7 Beta2). It was released on October 8th. Although a beta, the new user interface is a lot better than the one that shipped with v1.6 and is well worth the install.

The only downside is that I will have to manually add the controls to my logitech universal remote because the device has not been added to the product database. Has anyone already done this? If so, is it better than the standard remote?

    Update:
Works well with the logitech remotes. I have programmed all the buttons and have been using it for a few hours. Make sure you change the button delays for the device to 200ms or less, otherwise the lag is annoying.
