I was looking at the price initially and thinking meh, but then I realised there was an 808GB HDD preinstalled! This is the same price as the cheapest on Staticice without any HDD! ;)

Update: Sadly, the 1 day is up so the deal's been replaced now, thanks to all for the positive votes & contributions in the comments; and congratulations to those who also grabbed the bargain! Cheers! :)

A WD 808GB runs at about $84, so that is a good saving.

Nice to see "1 sale a day" move away from the $2 shop stuff they have been listing of late.

    • StewBalls, that can be included in the description. Comments about why it is a bargain are much more useful and interesting than copied info.

      • Feel free to pare the pasted specifications and edit/remove the above comment as you see fit Huey, I trust your judgement. ;)

        • Well, you don't have much choice in the matter even if you didn't ;)

The Deal Posting Guidelines have been revised recently and will continue to be refined.

From my perspective, the key is any personal explanation of why it's one of the best bargains worth sharing with others. This often, but not necessarily, involves price comparison, and is also enhanced by sharing any firsthand experience with the product/service as well as broader discussion.

Copied info isn't bad but it generally tells me nothing about why I'm looking at a bargain, and unfortunately it does imply that the poster wasn't sufficiently inspired to take a few seconds to write one sentence or paragraph.

Here's one example of an excellent post and discussion - Kodak 10MP Digital Camera - $149 @ ALDI (Lithium Ion battery, HD video recording). Full of useful information and commentary without being too long, and concise specifications that are most relevant with a link to further detail. One of the best posts on OzBargain.

  • does this do lower res than 1080p or ONLY 1080p?

cheers.. have an old TV want to replace the Xbox1 XBMC.

    • +2

it will do to the highest res your tv can support.
Just use the Component or Composite outputs depending on how old your tv is

  • Does this unit support BitTorrent when the computer is off?

    • Sorry, it doesn't appear to, otherwise I reckon they'd make a big thing out of that kind of feature in the specs! ;)

      • The reason i ask is that coincidentally Zazz also have a network-able media player that supports BitTorrent when the main computer is off. ive just joined, therefore i'm not allowed to submit a deal within 24hrs of registration otherwise id post it. The Astone seems like a much better unit and price anyway bar the bit torrent thing, which zazz havent fully explained so it might not be all its cracked up to be.
Im not copying pasting a link, cause to me thats as good as a submission - i dont want to get in trouble.

        • Yep, I saw the one on Zazz as well, seems like a direct competitor for the Astone AP-100 (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/16881) that was on COTD a couple of days ago, very similar spec playback wise except it doesn't do h.264 which is kind of a biggie to me! ;)

A Bittorrent client would be kinda cool, if it's well implemented; but I do like the control I have with uTorrent. I'm not sure an embedded client would be so well featured! ;)

        • I wouldn't bother with Torrents on a media tank, just use your computer??. Plus the one on zazz doesn't feature built in HDD. You need to plug USB drives in or use network afaik.

the only thing putting me off this is there is no real reviews/etc anywhere online about it, no picture of the remote or anything.

  • Does anyone know if this unit's got a gigabit ethernet port? 1080p over 100mb/s is painful…

    • Surely it would be. Gigabit is the standard nowadays.

Do you have a gigabit router/switch though? cause you aren't going to get gigabit speeds without one.

1080P over 100mb/s is fine anyway, all my stuff streams fine around my network.

  • i wonder what brand is the hdd? 808Gb seems like an unusual size (or maybe i'm just un-informed)

    • 808,888 is common drive size for Astone as its a lucky number for the Chinese.

  • Is 1saleaday trustworthy at all? I heard of the stories regarding their C250 MP3 players. This sounds too good to be true.

  • Looks good.. if i didn't already have a PS3

  • Although the title called 808G but does it 'really' include a 808 GB harddisk inside?

    • 808.8gb. Seagate and WD make the drive afaik. it's on 9289.com.au also.

I guess it's juts for the Chinese.

    • Also what is the brand of HD?

OT but why do they made 808.8GB? Why not round number like 800? Unless it target for Chinese market which like the number 8 - the lucky number.

      • i think its the Western Digital WD8088AADS. Probably originally for the Chinese market which eventually found its way here - it happens :)

  • +1

Damn, that is a top shelf deal. As said, half the price is the HDD, and the empty media player would normally be about the same or more than the price by itself. Saving at least a hundred bucks, probably more.

I believe the AP-300 is even a relatively new model, so it's not even clearance stock. Nice.

  • anyone knows if this decodes .MKV files?

  • Do we know if the wireless dongle is included?. Not sure if it is from the wording - Astone Media Gear AP-300 is compatible with Astone AW-N290 USB 802.11n wireless Dongle. Just plug this dougle into USB port of AP-300 to enable the wireless function. It's also not listed in the package contents.

PS Others have this for the same price on static ice

  • Anyone bought one yet?

The ones on staticice dont have the hard drive included.

  • I'm interested but concerned about the lack of clear indication if a HDD is included. In the specs it says "up to 2 tb support" but no where it says a hard drive is included. This bit "808GB Networked Storage - share/copy/delete files across local network via remote control " is not clear enough to me.

    Cheers
    M.

    • I called them and confirmed that the 808Gb HDD is installed. :)

You can ring them with any questions about the product 03 9572 3977

    • +1

I'm guessing it includes 808gb HDD, but takes a drive up to 2TB in size.

  • I just bought one. I'll be connecting my Pioneer external USB DVD drive to it (for when I have a DVD that I haven't ripped yet), and an external hard drive, as well as networking it.

  • DTS, DTS-HD Downmix is a big plus. Otherwise, if you don't have a receiver you get no audio for files with DTS audio.

What does the remote look like? I want a full size one.

  • does this deal include the USB wireless dongle?
If it does, i'll definitely get one!

    • Doesn't say so in the package contents, and I can't see why it would. It isn't listed.

  • +1

    No wireless dongle included.

Includes 808Gb HDD. I just rang them up to confirm.

There is more info from the Astone website:

    http://www.astone.com.au/index.php?productID=24

Not sure what the remote looks like but if the Astone AP-100 is anything to go by, then it should be the same as here:

    http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?p=10857845

You can compare other media players here, there is also Astone AP-320D with a faster processor, but also more expensive:

    http://www.stancom.net.au/pvr/

    • awww… damn!
does this unit compatible with any usb dongle or does it only compatible with Astone AW-N290 802.11n dongle ?

      • can someone please recommend me a wireless N dongle that's compatible with this unit?

  • Looks like they've just updated the page to say that the 808GB HD is installed :)

Now looking for a cheap HDMI cable :) Any suggestions?

    • I bought a few off eBay a while back, cost about $5 each with free shipping! ;)

      • thanks, did you just go for the cheapest one you could find? Do you happen to recall the seller?

        • Lol, yeah I did actually, I'm olympic-level stingy! The seller's nick was sky198381, I was very happy with the transaction too, fast delivery! :)

    • I bought a few off these guys. came in 5days after ordering and was alot quicker then Deal extreme
      http://www.budgetgadgets.com/advanced_search_result.php?keyw…

      • oOo thanks :)

  • Looks good just bought one,
Even for just HDD will be worth it!

    • You know that 1TB HD can be have for around $100?
Unless you after the lucky-8 drive.

      • I know… so for $90 I get a awesome HDMI media player… very cheap IMO

  • So has anyone actually used one of these?

Going by the specs this seems like an awesome deal. Most other media players don't seem to have a lot of HD support particularly for mkv files, and most are only HDD, whereas this has Ethernet.

  • I bought one. It's a good price IMO.
$198.99 delivered for a media tank with 808Gb HDD, MKV and H264 support. not bad at all.

Here are some other deals for comparison:

Zazz's deal for today is the Noontec GV-3731 for $128.75 plus $12.95 shipping. It has similar specs as the Astone AP-300 but without hard drive and no H264 support. Add a 1Tb hard drive and you pay $260.70 including shipping.

Over at ShoppingSquare the Noontec GV-3731 with 1Tb is cheaper, $239.90 including shipping.

  • Couldn't sit on the fence anymore, just ordered one :)

  • Doe's anyone know the dimensions of this player? on the Astone site they say it is 101 x 146 x 30.6 mm (L x W x H) but this is the same size as the Astone Media Gear AP-100 player.

    • Size: 206 x 142.5 x 48.1 mm (L x W x H)

  • Caved in as well… the mkv and h264 support got me, can finally retire my X360 as my media player.

  • I bought one as well to replace my X360 as a media player.

I have the Astone AP-100, and it works quite well.
The X360 interface is still cleaner and faster though, but at least I wont have to boot the X360 multiple times a day to put on the kids tv shows.

    • Reqman, can you tell me (us) will the AP-100 (which operates the same as the AP-300)play DVD rips in a way that you can navigate the file as if you were in the original DVD menu? Will it play an ISO of a DVD with menu support or does it just play the movie?

And can you have thumbnail images for files for easy identification (my 3 year old wouldn't be able to read the fle names and he needs to be able to use it, like he uses the DVD player it would replace).

      Thanks for any info!

  • Does anyone know how fast the Ethernet is on this?

Is it 100mbit or is it 1 gigabit?

    • +1

Surely it would be Gigabit it is the standard nowadays.

1080P over 100mb/s is fine anyway, all my stuff streams fine around my network.

You need a gigabit router/switch to utilise the speed anyway.

      • The review for the ap-100 model on TweakTown says that they couldn't get a fast enough speed to stream 1080p smoothly. That was through wired as well.

      • "Surely it would be Gigabit"
Nowhere on the website or on astone's website does it say gigabit
I think the above is a very dangerous assumption.

        • Gigabit lan has been the standard for ages, but now that u mention it you would think that it would state gigabit lan. I'm thinking you may be onto something there.

          • @TheWiz: As per my comment below. Manual says: Ethernet 10/100 Mbps RJ-45, SAMBA client, UPnP

If it turns out to be gigabit then that is a bonus.

  • +3

There is a good video review of the AP-100, which has the same interface as the AP-300, here -

    http://www.viddler.com/explore/TweakTown/videos/54/

  • Great review but the interface is not that flash compared to other media centres I've seen.

Have anyone bought stuff from these guys before?

Seems like a bargain. Without a HDD, its $220 from AusPC - http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php?redir=http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/show_product_info.php?input[product_code]=MU-AP-300&input[category_id]=

I'm really really tempted but would like to hear from others about their experience with 1SaleAday.

    • The seem pretty good brought some laser pens from them a while ago and they came around a week later(im in WA)

They have a American site to the have only just started over here i think

  • Wow thats awesome just brought a 2nd HDTV and was thinking of trying to get a 2nd PS3 for this type of thing but this seems why better.

Hopefully blueray players drop in price aswell soon

  • How long does it typically take from when you order to when it is received at your home. I live in Melbourne.

  • +2

    I ordered one too.

Here is a link to the User Guide: http://www.astone.com.au/products_files/AP-300%20User%20Manu…

Interesting the manual refers to Model ZP-530 which after a google search I found the same device made by Zinwell Corporation http://www.zintech.com.tw/modules/product/page.php?tbdsn=127

Refering to Jm51 video link above: Check out video quality at 11:00 into video. Picture is so smooth :)
    http://www.viddler.com/explore/TweakTown/videos/54/

Spec in manual also have ethenet as: Ethernet 10/100 Mbps RJ-45, SAMBA client, UPnP

  • Ah crap, Missed out. I only got home at 12:45 and it's changed to the damn Micro SD cards :-(

  • Guys, Anyone received the media player yet?

  • No not yet… Mine still says confirmed as the status… Hasn't changed since it was ordered… Hope it is slowly progressing behind the scenes… Anyone else?

    • :( Same as mine. Tried to call but only got to mail message. Left a message but I got the feeling noone will ring me back … by the way … they swapped the phone line to the fax line and vice versa :(

  • I haven't received my too, hope they give us an update soon. I'm really looking forward to it.

  • I wouldn't expect them to be posted until sometime this week. Maybe today. So hopefully by Friday. Would be nice to have it for the weekend. ;) a wink for anyone at 1saleaday following this thread.

  • Hi all, I'm in the same boat waiting for the Astone. I've left a message via their website, emailed them and left a voicemail message. No response.

This morning I rang Astone (02 9742 3288) to inquire about the order with 1saleaday. Was it real? I was connected to their account manager who mentioned that they were away on holiday. Of course! Jewish holidays. 1saleaday is a NewYork City electronics shop and this is their local Australian branch. (Don't mess with the Zohan anyone?!) Anyhow, Astone said that all of the units are still in Astone's warehouse ready to ship to 1saleaday.com.au tomorrow, and likely to go out to all of us later this week.

By the way, I was also assurred that the 808GB hard drive was included and installed and that I wouldn't be dissappointed by the unit.

Cheers everyone. Let's hear when you receive your unit!

    David

    • Good work sucnip, nice to know.

    • UPDATE: auto email from 1saleaday saying my item has shipped.

Also received a personal email from support saying the same.

Looks like this one is a go!

  • Hello All…

Got through to someone on the phone at 1saleaday, nice guy… Anyways, tells me that they have the said product and am packaging them to ship out either today or tomorrow. Hopefully we will get them not long after… And yes hopefully before the weekend to have time to tinker with…

    Cheers…

  • I just got an email to say the item shipped.

    • Me 2… maybe that wink worked ;)

  • Yep, just got the email saying it has shipped. woohoo!

  • GRRR… cant wait for it to arrive.. I expect tomorrow now!

  • My paypal echeque payment just cleared today, got an email saying status changed to Confirmed, just had a look at my account details on the site and status says shipped, haven't received the Shipped email notice yet, I'm expecting delivery some time next week.

  • Have anyone try to go to their website??? It has DNS error, looks like down but still able to go in if you put in ip.

    • Clear your cache (IE, firefox …). after that dns will work as well.

btw, does anyone got the player delivered?

      • No, I am thinking for me early/mid next week.

  • I ordered one and want to use it as part of a media centre am planning to get a projector does this thing allow tv to play or will i have to get a set top box? If so can someone recommend one. Thank you :)

  • looking at the back of the picture on there site, I would say no as there is no coaxial ports.

    Aacheney

  • +1

I just got mine. I'm in Melbourne.
Hopefully most other people get it today too.

    • Lucky bugger or should I say Scumbag. he he… haven't seen mine yet. Any feedback yet?

    • Did it come via courier or Aust post?

      • Courier - I guess. It was delivered to reception at my work.

I haven't tried it, but the unit looks well made - and weighs a lot (with the included HDD).

    • Still waiting, I officially hate you! ;)

  • +1

My wife just rang. My just got delivered. I am in Melbourne as well. I will have something to play around this weekend :)

Hope you guys got yours soon.

    • +1

My hate list is growing, gonna need a bigger notepad if I don't get mine soon! ;)

  • Anyone is Sydney get theres??

im still waiting, ordered 4, I think it will be really heavy….

  • I received mine aswell today. Good looking unit. I've hooked it up to my tv via hdmi, but i'm finding issues with 1080p file playback. I can't work out if it's my hdmi cable, the tv or the media centre.
I also bought the astone wi-fi dongle which I've hooked up and works well.

    • You wont be able to get 1080p across wireless.
you will either need to copy to internal HDD or usb memory stick
