Kodak 10MP Digital Camera - $149 @ ALDI (Lithium Ion battery, HD video recording)

320
  • 10 megapixel sensor
  • 3x optical zoom
  • 3" LCD display
  • HD Video (1280x720p @ 30fps)
  • Optical Image stabilisation and blur reduction technology
  • Face detection technology
  • Text and sound tagging with multi-field search
  • Kodak li-ion rechargeable digital camera battery and Kodak USB A/C

Starts 25th June - this is a fantastic deal for anyone after a cheap, good quality camera. The highlights of this camera are the large LCD screen (3 inch), optical-image stabiliser (very rare for cameras this price), high-definition video recording (720p @ 30fps) and a lithium-ion battery instead of AA usually found in this price range. The battery can be charged in-camera which is a useful feature not commonly found on most cameras. But perhaps the most surprising feature is that you can charge the battery in the camera via USB. It uses SD/SDHC memory cards which are the cheapest and most commonly found ones - 2GB from $7 delivered @ Game.com.au.

Overall, for $149 - it's a real bargain.

** EDIT ** It may be possible to get the camera down to $141.55. Officeworks have it on their website for $299 so if you show them the ad they might match it. Problem is OW require the other store to have stock, and we're talking about ALDI here, so they might sell out quicker than you think and you'll be left with no camera. Worth a try though, could get lucky. Officeworks link

a bit of blooming but that’s expected of a CCD camera. highlights are well controlled, sharp and accurate colours.
this thing SHAMES that el cheapo 1080p camera posted recently, and to think i almost got That one…. haha

Make sure that you select the HD button on YouTube to get a proper feel for the quality.

  • can some1 confirm if price match works on this one ? office work, Harv Norm, JBH ?
    thanks

    • Price match would be fine if you can find any other store with it. Since it's being advertised in the catalogue should be no problem getting it price matched, if you can find it.

Officeworks have it for $299, so you should be able to get it for $299 down to $149, less 5% - final price $141.55

      See - http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dig…

      • good deal cyssero… btw Officeworks will price match if you rock up with the catalogue and tell them Aldi has stock - after all, not like they can ring Aldi to check (Aldi local stores dont have fone numbers)..

        • if they can't ring up to check, they probably wont honor it.

          • @wisc: I've personally price matched items without OW calling up to verify stock/price.

  • edit: hmmm. maybe i'm wrong. in the "features" page of kodak, they clearly show the benefit being reduced blur in still shots. one final caveat though is that the IS does not work with HD video, according to steve's review i think.

""IS" on the M1093 does work, although probably not as well as "OIS" on the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 or "VR" in the Nikon DX series AF-S 55-200VR lens. (Or, the problem could be that you can't brace the camera against your face, as it doesn't have an optical viewfinder.) But, I just wanted something that could fit unnoticed in a pocket for casual use."

Yes, it doesn't work in HD recording mode, probably because the load placed on the processing chipset would be too great to also consider OIS. But it does work in all other modes.

For the price, the fact that we can even talk about OIS and HD recording in one sentence is pretty awesome.

      • +1

yup agreed. i'm definitely getting one seeing it has ois. thanks for posting it!

        • +1

No worries :) I'd be grabbing it myself but I paid a decent price for my IXUS 75 which might take better pictures but has fewer features.

  • +1

Great price for a camera with HD video and lithium ion battery. Thanks!

  • +1

If you don't catch it at Aldi, you shouldn't have any trouble getting Officeworks to pricematch JB, who've got it for $198 (so $188.10 at OW).

Not as good, but for those of us in states where there's no Aldi or if Aldi run out, a decent second option.

Great info again, great bargain and also great comparison for office works pricing. It's been a VERY good week for OzBargain :D

I hope we have more weeks like this.

Cheers mate, always happy to provide as much info as possible as long as people find it useful :)

  • Been wanting a good cheap camera for god knows how long. Thanks Cyssero!

The only thing is. From one of the reviews you posted, it said there's a 30 second wait (buffer processing time or something) after 3 consecutive shots. 30 SECONDS! That's a VERY long time until you can take another photo. Is this true? I wonder if you can upgrade the ram like in a laptop haha.

    • This might be the write time to the flash card. The camera stores the 3 consecutive photos in the RAM, then writes it to the flash card. Since not all flash cards are the same I assume they use very slow Class 2 SD cards (about 3MB/s~ write). If you use something like a Class 4 or Class 6 I imagine the time between shots will decrease by quite a bit.

My Canon IXUS does the same thing, but it's nice having consecutive shots.

Ok, I found it, it is from steve digicams:

"One annoyance I found was, the camera will only take three full size images before the buffer fills. It then takes about 7 seconds to take another shot, but a total of 30 seconds to completely clear a full buffer of only 3 images! This was with us using a very fast Class 6 SDHC card too. Continuous shooting mode was quite fast, capturing 3 images in just 1.3 seconds. However, again the buffer fills with 3 full size images, and you have to wait about 30 seconds for the buffer to flush and shoot another set of 3."

Sorry, it's actually 7 seconds between shots after the first 3. And yes it was with a class 6 card. Can you tell me a little more about your ixus? How many full resolution shots can you take before the buffer fills? Once it fills, how long do you have to wait to be able to take another picture?

        Thanks

        • +1

Ah, I see what you mean now. It's been a while since I used my IXUS so I'll try and find it and report back :) Still, that shouldn't be a show stopper for you (IXUS cost practically double this, and has less features), the camera looks pretty awesome even if a little slow with continuous shots.

        • interesting quirk, but means little to me anyway. having used dslrs at 3.5fps i've never found a use for it. get ready for a shot then shoot at a carefully timed moment is way more effective. anyone else feel the same?

  • hi Guys,

Any ideas how this compares to the creative vado hd?

  • +1

    Great info, thx cyssero.

Any idea of what package come with? eg. memory card, charger, battery etc.

Moreover, is Melb covered in promo area as well?

    • +2

      Hi mate,

No memory card included, but you will get full set of cables (USB/AV) and battery with battery charger. You can pick up a 2GB SD Memory card for $7 delivered here - http://www.game.com.au/showtitle?code=194535

ALDI stores are nationwide so I don't see why there would be any problems in Melbourne.

  • You guys got me interested in this but reading more reviews it is really only good for its HD video capabilities (note: IS doesn't work in video mode) and point and shoot in daylight only.
The low light shots are really bad! Check out sample shots higher than ISO400.. it starts to look like impressionist paintings!

Thanks for the link, but i'd like to correct a few points before others may be misled.

      http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_TZ7_ZS…
this link shows a rrp$749 panasonic tz7 and as you can see, the iso400 image isn't any better than your link of the m1093

Truth is, many people are not appreciating the physical and technical limitations of point-shoot cameras thesedays. With 10megapixels on 1/2.33" CCD (actually a pretty good ccd size for ps camera. some use 1/2.5") the pixels are tiny, and have little light gathering power. Ideally you should only shoot at base iso (iso64 in this camera), to up to iso200, like you mentioned. if you need better high-iso image quality, there aren't many point-shoot cameras that can do it beside maybe the Canon SX10 and SX1.

I'm not sure whether your comment about its IS is true. i know it was mentioned in the review, but i think kodak's site said: image stabilising in movie mode: Yes (not in HD). so it sounds like ois is available in SD, just not HD.

My thoughts on the worthwhile pros and cons of the camera are:

      PRO:
-Very decent HD mode, recorded in x264 format, which is way better than mpeg2 that some cameras offer (eg pana tz7). you can record about 2-3times as much with the same quality and file size
-OIS for all modes other than HD vid.
-USB chargeable!! lithium battery! light and also dont have to carry a charger when travelling
-huge easy to use 3" LCD
-i actually think its above average high ISO image quality, judging by the dcresource link

      Con:
-No IS in HD mode, which is a real shame since HD will be what i'll shoot most of the time.
-slowish lens (f3.1-5.4 i think). better cameras start at f2.8 or even 2.5. benefit of this though is that lens is lighter and of course, cheaper for us
-No custom white balance, so you're stuck with the presets and auto white balance
-Possibly shorter than average battery life (rated 220 shots)
-average flash power for the class, which is to say pretty low.

      Other thoughts:
-what a great spare camera to have! perfect complement to a dslr or any other bulky cameras you have
-yayyy hd. i've had enough of vga on a camera thank you
-even as a primary camera, it appears to do a stunning job. just dont over expect what's possible on a compact point and shoot camera.

Yes i'm having a slow sunday. still in bed typing this up. i hope it helps some people.

for what its worth, i have the m1033 that seems to be the same minus the IS.
not a hardcore photographer, but i love this camera, its fantastic for what i needed, really love the panorama stitching function that i assume the m1093 has aswell

  • confirmed, OW clarence st sydney 2000 does not have it. OW centre said only 2 availb, and far from city. i might just go to aldi then

  • +1

Bought one today from OW for $149.Dee Why & North Ryde Store have plenty in stock

    • Didn't you get a pricematch?

      • Original price at OW was $299.After I mentioned about the ALDI offer,OW put the price down to $149 and adviced that they can't reduce 5% more because it's already been reduced at ALDI- which is not the normal retail price.

        • So OW can only reduce 5% off "normal" retail price? lol
Anyways, good for them to give it to you for $149.
