Help with Internet Connectivity Problems

Hoping some people may be able to help me with some internet connectivity issues I am experiencing on my computer.

I am currently running my PC through my home WiFi connection through a USB WiFi stick (only option I currently have available), and seem to be having connection issues with it. My computer will stay connected to the WiFi network itself, but just won't load anything at random moments; and it does this on a continuous cycle. All my other devices that run through WiFi (laptops, phones, tablets, etc.) seem to work fine without any of the issues my PC faces, so possibly the modem/router is not the problem.

This is also the 2nd USB WiFi stick I have purchased, in an attempt to resolve this issue, which did not work.

Are there any methods I can currently do to resolve this issue?

  • We need a bit more information.

    Does it say "No Internet Access"? when you click on the status of the wifi connection? If so, reset your network adapter. Then make sure your Wifi IPv4 settings are set to Automatic

    Or does the WiFi seem to just disappear and reappear again? Or how strong is the wifi signal that's being received? If signal strength is fluctuating up / down it's a sign that you may have wireless interference, run Ethernet cables if that is the case. If that's not possible get yourself an EoP adapter.

    • When I click on the status of the wifi connection, it would say "Connected"; however when I want to open a webpage for example, it will just either load indefinitely or say it can not connect at random moments (happens on both Chrome and Firefox).

      As for the signal strength, it's steadily on 4 to 5 bars at all times. It's just the speed of the connection I get; it fluctuates from full speed to nothing, only on this PC.

      Also, tried troubleshooting the network adapter just in case; it claims the connection has no problems. Then made sure my IPv4 settings were set to automatic by following the link you sent; which they already were.

      • It could also be malware related.

        Try a different operating system.

        Do you have a copy of Linux on hand? Go to http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

        Make yourself a Pen drive linux (Puppy Linux is small and light). Run Unetbootin, in the drop down box choose Puppy Linux and then insert a USB flash drive and start the creation process.

        Boot the computer off the USB flash drive. Power off the computer. Insert USB drive. Power on computer. Press F12 when it boots up and then choose the USB drive, press Enter to boot. You will then run Linux.

        Also another method to test. When you say you are unable to get on the internet, can you still actually access the Modem router's web interface?

        Also try pinging a device on your network, like 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1 and see if you have any packet loss.

  • Hmmm would it be 3G Internet congestion…..what time(s) of day are you experiencing this issue? I am only hypothesising here just in case?

    • Huh…3G? This is a problem with his local wifi connection, it has nothing to do with 3G.

      3G internet congestion? My wifi connection is from an ADSL2+ line, then through my modem/router I get my internet connection to my computer; which I need a USB wifi adapter for as I can't get an ethernet cable in the room.

  • It would be helpful if you could provide some screenshots

    1. Delete the wifi connection on your pc and re-establish the connection.
      … if that does not sort it then..
    2. Look for a setting, possibly in power saving?, to do with sleep mode with wifi connection or similar.

    This happens a lot with mobile phones but with them you just select a setting to keep the connection alive.

  • What Windows/OS do you have?
    Blind guessing if you are running older Windows.
    Internet Option, Check LAN settings, Click Autodetect…, Unclick proxy ….
    (I am no expert…from past experience)

  • Do you have any baby monitor or wireless home phone near by? Their frequency might interfere with your WiFi.

    • Also try selecting channel 11 on your WiFi admin (from automatic)

  • Eliminate the WiFi from testing.

    Buy a cable long enough to run from the router to the PC. Take out the WiFi USB stick. Test for a few days.

    I'm not going to begin to explain why because I have in countless other threads and posts around the internet, but if nothing else helps just do it.

  • Device manager>expand network adapters>delete all. Then, top of same page, click icon to refresh/install new hardware.

    Properties window of the wireless adapter>look through tabs & buttons until you find "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" & un-tick that box.

    Within the accessories folder under programs> right click command prompt>run as admin> ipconfig /flushdns —>enter

    At the same prompt, sfc.exe /scannow Won't hurt to run a file check.

    A Malwarebytes Free sweep wouldn't hurt, either. Get it at ninite.com

  • This is super common in cheap USB wifi….
    I recommend investing in a powerline ethernet kit.

    But anyway, go into the devices properties and turn the transmit power down a touch. For most, this resolves it.

    Also, make sure both your wifi card and router are set to a short preamble.

    If your router has a 40mhz mode, disable it.

  • As a first step, make sure you have the latest driver for the USB WiFi adapter (check the manufacturer website for any recent driver updates).

    If the above doesn't fix the problems, then make sure you have the latest firmware for the modem/router.
