Must See Things or must Buy Things in Singapore?

Hi guys

I am travelling to Singapore for 3 days next week. Any recommendations for must buy things or must see tourist attractions?

Cheers and thanks in advance!

For a very natural experience take a bumboat across to Pulau Ubin and hire a bike to pedal round a beuatiful unspoilt bit of singapore.

One of the best parts of our trip last year.

Other more typical things in Singapore…
the New gardens by the bay are incredible
    Sentosa Island is terrific.
There is a light show (free) at the marina bay each night

If you have the urge to shop in the middle of the night, there is Mustafas in Little India which is open 24 hours- http://www.mustafa.com.sg/
It has a wide range of electronics, jewelry, clothes, etc

    • Mustafas is just an experience in itself. It's so filled with crap it's a fire hazard. They still sell Beverley Hills 90210 Jeans. Reckon they'd do great on the Hipster market.

Shit i live in QLD…but Singapore Humidity takes it up a notch.

    Thank goodness for AirCon.

    Beautiful food in SIN.

    • Agreed on all points… And I even used to live in Manila.

Gardens by the Bay are Amazing

    • +1 - Completely amazed by the Gardens by the Bay. Highlight of my Singapore visit.
Look it up if you're not sure what it is.. none of the photos really do it justice though. Feels like Avatar the movie with multiple "Trees of Life".
I recommend going at night for their free "Garden Rhapsody" show which is at 7:30 and 8:45PM every night.

  • Visit the Kudeta bar at Marina Bay or One Altitude for night view of the city. Similar to Shangri-la in Sydney

Theres probably some cheap stuff at markets etc, but personally i found that Singapore wasn't that cheap especially compared to other Asian countries. Most clothing, electronics and stuff wasn't that much cheaper than here.

Universal Studios was pretty good if thats something your into. We also went on a night safari and that was good too.

  • +1

yes i second Singapore Aint Cheap for clothing and electronics …. wasted probably 2 days finding that out. Bugis is about the only place your likely to find a bargin.

personally i thought Sentosa was way over commercialized … good idea but geez how many shops do you need ? and another casino ? and the beach ? hmmm. USS was average, needs some work.

    recommendations (no order):
    skyline luge
kranji (if you like a bit of history)
ion sky (a great view opposite to what you get from the wheel and sky park).
botanical gardens (preferred over GBTB except for the domes, they are great)
night time walking down the singapore river path … start from the wheel if you wish.
hawker style foods in commercial basements

    secondary recommendations:
    bird park
henerson waves (its something a little different)

looking forward to going back one day because there was a few things i didnt get a chance to see.

and dont forget to take LOTS of water with you everyday and if you have a camera, heat it up with a hair dryer before you leave the hotel.

  • I also booked tickets to Singapore. Will keep an eye on this thread..

Gotta get the chili crab from Jumbo's.

    • I usually go down to East Coast Park for my Chili Crab (which is where Jumbo's is apparantly).

  • +1

Avoid buying electronics from Sim Lim square. You get better bargains on OZB anyway.

    • Yeah… That boat sailed 10 years ago.

  • +1

I lived there for 10 years… chilli/pepper crab at the east coast seafood centre, beers in boat quay, golf on Batam/Bintan, roti in Little India and cheap taxis are about all I miss.

You could always hit up the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling :)

    • +1

i had a few slings last time I was there… theyre like 30 dollars each now. I had to eat around 1kg of peanuts to even recoup half the price of a single singapore sling at raffles hotel. Had better elsewhere I think for cheaper, Raffles ones are just for the history.

  • If you're staying at the Changi Village hotel, the lady boys frequent the carpark across the road, near the hawker stands. Just in case it's your thing!

But if you are around Changi, check out the WW2 memorial. It's well worth the trip there to get an insight into the local view of the WW2 invasion. The cafe there is nice, but like the rest of Singapore's established eateries, not exciting.

If you're after a WTF food experience, down the back corner of the hawker area in China Town, there is a german guy selling sausages and other german food out the back of a trailer. It's been 5 years since I went to see him, so I can't say if he's still there.

  • The Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios, Orchid Garden, Lego Land (if you have kids- tours can be organised at your hotel & they will arrange a pick up). We went for the F1 this year. It was excellent!!!!! We got MRT under ground train passes for 3 days for $30. When you return the card you get your $10 deposit back. Also flights are cheap from Singapore to Bali through Jetstar

  • chilli crab!

also for the marina sands, don't go to the observation deck, that cost money, take a lift to the bar (which is one level below the deck) and get a drink
its the same view, about the same price and u get a drink!

The Chinese and Japanese Gardens is not too well known but I love it. Take the MRT towards the west and it is about a ten minutes walk from the Chinese Gardens stop. Free entry.

There is the world's largest tortoise and turtle museum in it (gotta pay for entry) and you can pet and feed hundreds of red-eared sliders all around you imagine that.. Will try to see if I can find a photo.

If you have time, I recommend just taking the train around Singapore to visit the "suburbs". Alight at any major stop and there's bound to be food and at least two malls. Cheaper food than in the touristy places and you can see up close the HDB flats, wet markets etc.

Have heard about the peranakan tour too which was recommended to me if you wanna learn about the culture. Other stuff: Black Ball taiwanese dessert (franchise) is so good, the bugis market stalls (back alley, not the main bugis mall), the sambal sting ray (yummy if you can take spicy stuff), Geylang for the fried dough fritters dipped in soy drink or coffee and other food and "services". maybe if you are tired from a day of walking, drop in to a charismatic church service lol. Free, an hour, thousands of people at each service, good comfy seats, an eye opener (I'm not Christian, just went there to see what it was like).

If you walk 5 minutes the other way from Chinese gardens station you get to jurong east swimming complex. Pools, water slides, jacuzzi, lazy river , wave pool and kids water playground. Great for a family day out from the heat and less than $2 entry.

  • Get lost!!!!!!

  • Take a walk down orchard road for window shopping unless you are into designer stuff. The whole road is exquisitely and brightly decorated and light up for x'mas. Changi beach is rustic and free. You can see all incoming planes real close flying above the coconut trees. Go to the Changi hawker centre for cheap food and cold drinks - the Nadi lemak (fragrant coconut rice with fried chicken, anchovies and sambas chilli) is pretty popular. Try the cold dessert like chendol (generous helping of red beans with bits of chewy stuff in coconut milk in shaved ice). Chinatown has glorious food too and the chicken rice at maxwell road market close to Chinatown is world famous (tien tien chicken rice is the one with many wannabes close by - look for the long queue). Little India in serangoon has all things Indian.

  • I was there a couple of months ago and stumbled across the Singapore City Gallery. It tells a slightly polished story of Singapore over the last 50 years, but includes interesting things like the different layers of the city beneath the roads and has models of the city. Free. http://www.ura.gov.sg/uol/citygallery/

I also really enjoyed the Singapore treetop walk. Took a bus to the start point, walked around MacRitchie Reservoir completely. The path goes along a golf course for a while, and there were heaps of monkeys. I ended up on a different bus and stopped in one of the suburbs (not sure which one) and enjoyed a nice meal. As lenlynn said above, cheaper food than in the touristy areas. http://www.nparks.gov.sg/cms/index.php?option=com_visitorsgu…

  • This will be a good thread. I'm taking my kids for their first trip OS in March. Staying in Bugis (at this stage)

  • +1

cor chilli or pepper crab.. gotta go to 'No Signboard Seafood'

    • Well I think you really have to have both, so you can decide on which you prefer :)

  • Well, thoughts of a holiday were short lived. Jetstar just changed our flights from a 6 day visit to an overnighter.

    • Oh no, :(

Well there may be an upside.

      more money to spend on OZB ;}

      • +1

Not sure I could spend more on OZB lol

Maybe a blessing in disguise actually. Think we'll head to Japan instead. Well, that's the hope but I've learnt not to get excited until the plane lands at the destination.

  • Don't forget to go to Lor Gylong :)

  • I went there recently, and created a google map of the things I wanted to see, as well as the hotel that I stayed at.

    https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zPW3snhB4bxM.krTb7mh4…

Hopefully that shows up. You will notice that I have mapped a number of chilli crab restaurants..
I can recommend going to the Maxwell Food Centre. There are two places I haven't filled in, which are:

    Former Gordon Ramsey chef dude
    http://bibikgourmand.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/oxwell-and-co-s…

The one michelin star dumpling place, which to me means that I'm a spoilt assface because I didn't think it was all that.
