OCZ Arc 100 SSD 120GB $59, 240GB $105, 480GB $219 @ MSY Pickup

270

OCZ were notorious for failed SSDs but with Toshiba picking them up it may be time to give them another go.

Prices rival the last SanDisk Ultra II deal but these use Toshiba MLC NAND which should last longer than the TLC NAND used in the SanDisk.

  • Still butthurt about my dead Vertex. Hopefully they've changed their ways

    • +1

2 years later My Vertex 4 still runs perfectly… :)

      • I think that was after the really crap batch with Sandforce controllers (2 and LE)

    • my vertex 2 120gb died in less than a year, had to send it overseas for warranty. but they didnt argue the point as they likely had so many failures. only took 2 months for a BNIB to come back, which I sold way too cheap
it cost a bomb >$400, so never again

    • I am still on vertex first gen 120gb.. 4.5 years and counti <ssd dies>

No seriously, it's been going fine for 4.5 years

      • My Vertex 3 has been going solid for many years now, guess we are just the lucky ones!

  • How do they compare to the Samsung EVO 840?

    • +1

It does pretty well actually. Wins some and loses some and if you compare the price it's a no brainer.

Samsung is more reputable, only $25 more for data security? How is it a is brainer for the former… o_O

  • Is it reliable? I'd like to put it in my macbook pro late 2011.

    • +2

no one know yet, you can test and tell us, but I will still stick with Samsung

    • It's reliable but not fast, everything about this drive says low end…

    • I've got a OCZ Vertez in my macbook pro 2011, it works fine. I guess the notebook only supports SATA 2, so I believe your just better off getting a better priced SSD.

  • My octane s2 was crap. Died and had a heap of problem getting RMA. Felt like I had to scream to get it done. Even when I did everything they asked to check the ssd, they still asked me to format and reinstall windows again even when it was still failing. Also, the firmware was a pain to update. Couldn't do it through windows. That will be one main buying point for my next ssd. Must be able to update firmware easily.

Very reluctant to buy OCZ again.

  • Good deal, but decided against buying this for a netbook due to the power consumption test here:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/8407/ocz-arc-100-240gb-review/…

This draws way too much power when idling.

    • why is the idle power so poor?

    • I really have to question the accuracy of this test. Only 1 significant figure in the results?

This drive is rated at 0.6W idle, but this review shows 0.8W…seems like they don't have an instrument to measure this accurately enough?

        again

i think maybe anand got an early test version?

i really trust storagereview over just about anyone else

        • Yep, this looks consistent with the Anandtech review that has idle power draw at just over 0.6W. Still unsure about this as it seems some SSDs draw as little as 0.1W while idling. For a netbook with a smallish battery, this might make a significant difference.

  • Good price however warranty for ocz is very tricky, you have to folk out both way of shipping cost for replacement if you r oz customer. Is that right? By the way,any good deal for Samsung SSD?MSY?

  • I just spotted something a little bit worrying. I was looking at the EGVA power supplies and I went looking to see what the 80 plus rating means and to see if this power supply actually has it. Turns out it only gets the 80plus rating on 115 volt. Then I looked at their 500w 80plus bronze and again no 230volt. In fact EGVA has no 230v power supplies at all that have been certified.

Turns out it only gets the 80plus rating on 115 volt.

80+ is still better than the non-rated PSUs with efficiencies as low as 60%.

In fact EGVA has no 230v power supplies at all that have been certified.

That's normal. Most switching PSUs are rated for the less efficient 115V. For 230V we get a slightly better deal since it's more efficient than 115V.

Only PSUs that only take 230V are rated at 230V for example the Corsair VS series.

  • Anyone know much about the D1500? My current modem/router is on the blink but my actual internet connection at home isnt the greatest so I don't want to spend a bucketload on a replacement.
