  • I bought this one the other day. Didn't realise at the time that it is dumb charger that works purely on a timer, which isn't good for the batteries and definitely not good if they are part charged. Also the batteries supplied are the Chinese made ones, which aren't anywhere near as good quality as the Japanese made Sanyo ones.

"Chinese made ones, which aren't anywhere near as good quality as the Japanese made Sanyo ones"

can you go into detail please

    • heard the same thing about the new Eneloops - will be hard to find many of the Jap ones left now…

Dan - the testing that compared the Jap made to the Chinese made Eneloops found that the new Chinese made units did not hold their power for as long as the Jap models. Whilst they have the right number of charges listed they simply are not made as well from what I read around the net.

      just google it mate.

      • I saw Japanese made Eneloop Tropicals at DSE George St (Sydney) the other day. Probably about 100 packs. Shame they were not on sale ($49.99 for an 8-pack). They do exist though

The tropicals are now on sale at $19.98 plus shipping

        • @xiangtan: Unfortunately you'll likely receive Tropical Panasonic (Made in China) ones if you buy from the online store. I did, like many others. That said, if you put in a bit of effort, you'll also likely be able to exchange the China ones in store for Japanese made ones (only if the store stocks them).

        • @xiangtan:

damnit i hate it when they only have home delivery option for some of these deals :/

Thanks for the feedback on the charger. Handy to know it only runs on a timer - which is useless, unless you want to damage the batteries.

  • marked as oos for me =(

May as well get the quick charger + 4 batteries for $29.99. Purchased this the other day from Dick for $35.

    • Is this the same charger as the overnight charger?

    • Forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference between this quick charger vs overnight charger?

I can see that the quick charger says "smart & quick" on the charger itself, but surely this isn't in the same league as the proper "smart" chargers other OzBangers rave about like the La Cross (sp) etc.?

      • I am an Eneloop newbie here so forgive my ignorance too. I believe the quick charger is a 2 hour charge and also has a microprocessor to prevent overcharging. Please refer to the link below. Compare chargers BQ-CC16 (quick and smart) and BQ-CC18 (overnight charger)

      • I have a La Crosse BC700. It does more than just charge, and it doesn't overcharge the batteries. Can't say anything about the Eneloop charger as I haven't used it before.

The overnight charger works on a timer….ie it will try to charge the battery until the timer finishes, this leads to damage to the cell as you are overcharging. The smart charger uses voltage regulation which means it reads the voltage state of the battery and stops charging once the battery reaches its charged voltage (~1.5V for eneloops).

this smart charger vs the LaCrosse or the Maha C9000? features, all of them will charge each cell individually (ie take a voltage reading per cell and cut off when necessary). However the more expensive chargers will give you more options. I don't own a LaCrosse, but I can tell you that the C9000 allows you to discharge a battery, charge a battery, cycle (charge, discharge, charge), and refresh/analyse. It also allows you to change the charge rate (which is important with different sized/capacity batteries) and discharge rate (ditto). I just used my C9000 to refresh a set of very sick Powerex Imedions (3 batteries were holding 240-250mAh and the last a healthy 1600mAh) after hitting the refresh/analyse cycle they now all hold a reasonable 1950-1970mAh.

It monitors each of the 4 slots separately and stops charging when it somehow determines the respective battery is full. Whether that cut-off is as 'intelligent' as the proper 'smart' chargers is up for discussion since Panasonic don't seem to publish proper specifications. Given how cheap Eneloops have become I for myself decided that this charger is good enough for me.

Thanks for the replies all… I am now enelightened =)

I bought the Eneloop Quick charger the other day for $27 odd and it is great.

I put some Eneloops in it that were charged a few months ago and the charger only ran for 20minutes or so then turned off. The Dumb charger would have run for 14 hours or so and cooked them.

    Great !

  • DS needs to promote some other goods. People are Eneloop-immune.

  • anyone seen any good deals on the smart and quick charger by itself?

    • edit: found these on ebay for AUD$15.98 that claim to have "peak voltage protection."

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SANYO-Eneloop-Charger-4-NiMH-AA-A…

disadvantage is, it must charge in pairs and is much slower

      • Dumb chargers.

      • Never mind, you changed your comment while I was replying to it.

Why can't OzBargain lock a comment when someone has started replying?

        • It'd be open to potential abuse if it was locked, someone could just keep the reply window open/re-open each time it timed out, I guess?

        • @Jekyll:

Thanks. I think I'll have to start doing one-line replies then, to lock the comment, and then come back and edit my reply.

I'm tired of writing a paragraph, then posting my reply, only to find that what I was replying to has changed!

You could quote it in your post, like so.

  • I would think that a voltage sense circuit would be much cheaper than a timer…
