FREE: Disney Pixar's RenderMan Software via Registration (Normally $495) Released Early 2015

570

For those that missed it last time, Disney Pixar has re-opened the registration for its non-commercial version of RenderMan, now due for release in early 2015. Enjoy :)

If you're an aspiring animator, this may just be the best news you'll hear this month. Disney Pixar is giving away (that's right - giving away) a non-commercial version of RenderMan, its in-house animation software. Free. Gratis. No catch. You'll be able to download the program some time in early 2015.

Disney Pixar has used RenderMan, which costs $495 (commercial use), to render some of its best-known animated features like Wall-E and Toy Story, so this is a really, really big deal.

Simply fill out the registration form, download the program when it's available in a few months, and start creating your very own Toy Story 4.

Here is the official FAQ from the RenderMan website.

FYI for people that don't know, this is only a renderer (albeit a very good renderer), you will need a separate application to create 3d models, scenes, and animations then render out using renderman, initially it will only support Maya or Katana more applications will be supported after release by 3rd party solutions…

If you have a student or faculty uni email you can get a free non commercial copy of Maya (and lots more autodesk applications) here
