Refurbished. Do you buy? What to avoid? Where to get good stuff?

Ebay has 'refurbished' items very now and then. What are your experiences with refurbished goods? What to avoid? What to Buy?
My experience: Digital radios. A load of people buy them, can't tune them, or can't get dab reception, and return immediately. A lot of good savings. I picked up a refurbed Bush Digital radio on ebay (from the bush supplier) - obviously never used - quarter of the price from DSE.

Any other bargains lurking out there?

  • Well for your purchase, a Bush Digital radio for 75% off, you can't go wrong taking that risk.

Most refurbs are returns that were faulty or DOA and repaired. They usually have the same guarantee & warranty as new items.

Perhaps stick to items that aren't overly technical or require reliable use everyday like a laptop.

  • Graysonline has heaps of refurb stuff.

I don't get their bidding system (and have never bothered) but outright prices can sometimes be decent. They only come with a 3 month warranty though so I wouldn't buy anything too expensive from them.

  • I've recently purchased a refurbished Alienware pc from Dell and the experienced really put me off buying refurbished.

    1. The PC contained another persons data, photos etc - Had I been a crook I could easily have stolen the last owners identity/credit card details. Whilst you might say that the last owner should have been more careful I believe Dell have a duty of care to wipe pcs.

    2. It was broken and the problem had not been fixed by dell as I inherited the same issue.

I guess my point is that it depends on the merchant.

    • i bought a dell inspiron i7 5000 refurb. had it for 3/4 weeks no problems, it is like brand new.
The way its been I would buy again.
15 day return period if you don't like it and 12 month new pc warranty.

    • I've bought a few laptops/pc's from the dell outlet. haven't had any problems with any of them. All of mine were wiped clean of any ones data (if there was any there to begin with) and i think at least 2 of them had not been even taken out of the box. Sometimes they end up in the outlet store as someone has customized a computer, then cancelled the order after it was put together. The Alienware laptop im using now is from the outlet store and its still going strong after about 3 or 4 years, Just the battery cant hold too much charge anymore, but that's expected from using it 8 hours a day 5 days a week.
