Help! Buyer Threatening Negative Feedback Because 'iPad Too Slow'

Hey guys. I sold an iPad 2 with iOS 8 (fresh install) on ebay recently. No issues with transaction or postage. All details of the tablet were clearly disclosed including hardware, operating system version and condition. It was in excellent working condition.

However a few weeks after the transaction the buyer is threatening to leave negative feedback because they feel the iPad is 'too slow'.

I think the buyer has hopelessly unreasonable expectations from a 3.5 year old tablet. I made no representations of the speed, and even stated that I was upgrading to a new model. Surely the buyer should be aware of the capabilities of what they are buying, especially in a private sale. The A5 processor with iOS 4 was reasonable in 2011 but it's not exactly snappy now.

What should I do?

  • It is always a risk selling IT items as you never know the skill level of the recipient.
I would just hang in there until he does something, sometimes a slightly disgruntled purchaser comes to realise that they should have checked the products performance more and therefore some of the blame is theirs.
You have written to him explaining that the ebay ad fully disclosed all specs and age of the ipad.
If he was expecting the performance of a current model unit then that is what he should have purchased.

What if you tell them to go into an Apple store to get an Apple staff to look at it, Apple will probably tell them its normal for the age and specs of the ipad. Might help get the buyer off your back as the buyer will most likely trust what Apple tells them than what you say.

Be supportive as the seller as best you can, but if you feel the buyer is making it up and you've not done anything wrong and they are threatening to leave negative feedback, report him to ebay.

  • I have an ipad 2 and since loading ios7 it is bery slow, i will not be loading ios8 as i believe it will slow down even more. Sounds like your buyer as said previously has not done his homework, it maybe worth trying to find an article on the internet regarding ipad2 being slower on newer versions of ios and emailing him the link. I believe he has got what he paid for, old hardware with new software. Try running Windows 8 on an early celeron chip with slow smaller RAM etc….

  • There are a number of articles on the internet regarding ipad2 and ios8 eg. http://www.technologytell.com/apple/141189/ios-8-downside-ma…
Email this to him, he has got what he paid for, i would just explain nicely to him this fact.

    • Get him to upgrade to 8.1.1. It is supposed to quicken things up a bit for iPad 2 users.

  • yeah, I got a work ipad 2 and with 8 its slow! have to update and see if it improves it

just updated to 8.1.1 on work ipad and its much better
still slightly slow but much better

If the buyer has threatened negative feedback then report him to eBay. It is called feedback extortion and eBay will remove negative feedback from any buyer who has threatened a seller with negative feedback.

  • one of my ipad is the orginal ipad, still working well. slow with an ipad 2? may be I am easy to please.
does the buyer know how to close the app opened or reset?
