This is one of those really sad times where I buy an app but then have NFI how to use it :( I've even got an N54L NAS from a previous deal, but looking up how to set up plex on it is just a bit mind boggling.

    • It's not that hard.

    • There's youtube videos on how to set it up.

    • let me know if you need help.

Just start doing it, it is much easier then you think.

      • Thanks guys… Yeah might have to get stuck into it on the weekend. I managed to get freenas 64bit set up on it so surely installing plex on it can't be that hard….

Better from the Amazon store in their previous deal - $0! :)

    • Amazon give plex away all the time, I imagine it will be free again for the holidays

    • Except the Amazon version is apparently way out of date. There are threads on the Plex forums about it.

Edit: this might actually no longer be an issue!

    • Amazon, that's where I got mine for free :)

Edit: Plex have screwed me twice for payment in the past so if its not free I'm not interested, they have sold out and lost me as a paying customer.

Edit 2: I think the above reasons allow me to neg.

Edit 3: sauron256 don't take this personally its just that plex the company are greedy feckers.

This was free a few weeks ago via Amazon.

I'm annoyed Plex is trying to charge a subscription rate to use Plex on the Xbox. It's simply not worth the lifetime fee of $US150 either. Thankfully Xbox now has DLNA.

Agreed… would like to a see this one-off price for xbox one version… hopefully its planned soon

$5 or I wont buy it.

  • What's the real difference between Plex for Android and Plex for Google?

    • +3

As the name said, One is Plex for Android, another is Plex for Google TV. Google TV is like Apple TV.

62 cents if you got the HN Telstra $30 Starter kits for $8 :)
77 cents if you get the current Auspost deal ($15 for $15 topup + free $30 starter kit).

I think I got up to a total of around $18, but it's been dry on surveys for a while now..

You should probably get a doctor to check that out.

  • thanks, just got mine on Andoid, heavy user of Plex.

got this free in the amazon sale, i wouldnt pay for it, its crap.

Mediahouse is a much better option. Once Plex designs the app to push content then it becomes useful, otherwise, why anyone pays for it is beyond me.

    • Yeah with you. I've never seen the value of Plex myself, downloaded the free apps, ran the server on my NAS, and a lot of files stopped playing and/or stuttering.

Went straight back to Serviio for the server, and clients don't seem to matter much with that - run whatever you like it just works.

What's so good about it? I'm perPLEXed.

      • Works great over my Chromecast which is how I use it.

        • Yeah, look could be the Plex server on my Thecus is a bit dodgy, but I'm sure I tried my notebook as well and I just COULD NOT get it to accept all file formats and if it did the stuttering was horrendous.

The network is Gigabit through and through with the Thecus NAS supplying 120Mbps+ streaming over an aggregated double ethernet link.

Works great with Twonky, works even better with Serviio, but for some reason Plex didn't like my files. I stopped trying.

Absolutely possible I'm doing something wrong or forgotten to check a box or something though. Could just be my incompetence.

  • They probably need to find something to spend their Telstra prepaid credit on, and at $2 couldn't care less if it goes to waste or not.

  • I can't get Plex working with my HP NAS (running ubuntu) (won't recognise my additional HDD's)

Has anyone had these problems, and solved them?

    Cheers

    • +1

      Get xpenology

      • cheers mate

    • +1

Have you tried Serviio? I find it works a crapload better than Plex.

      • +1

        Xpenology isn't a media server it's a custom OS

        • +2

Yeah sorry Dez, I was trying to reply to the fact sab couldn't get Plex working, not the actual Ubuntu installation.

Having said that I wasn't aware of Xpenology. Did some reading and am now though! Synology's GUI for it's NAS devices are often lauded as the best. Good to see coders bringing that to other NAS devices. Impressive.

          Learn something every day…..

        • cheers mate

    • Just mount the drives on Ubuntu and you are off. They are mounted and it still does not recognize them?

      • that's precisely the problem!! they are mounted and plex doesn't recognise them =(. tried multiple fixes, considering switching off either plex or ubuntu entirely at this point.

  • Just bought this and can't figure out how to add files to play from my Android phone to Chromecast. I connect ok and select offline and on screen it says add files to plex but on phone it has my library and channels and no way to browse files on my phone. I was using localcast no problem to play offline media.

    • That's because you need a server for it to work. A desktop, laptop, microserver or nas could be used. On one of those devices you would need plex media server installed.

  • So I cant use this straight from my phone to my Chromecast to watch movies from my card like I can with localcast, then its no good for me can I get refund on this.

    • In the plex app, under setting enable "advertise as server" and it might work. If it doesn't it won't but there other options to push content from your phone to chromecast
