D-Link 2890AL ADSL2+ Router (Bonus Dongle AND Cloud Camera) $159 Inc Post @Wireless1 +More Deals

550
CYBERVIP

Got another “exclusive” newsletter offer from these guys - the code CYBERVIP looks generic enough and it's a good deal so posting it. Using the code brings the router down from $219 to $159 and makes shipping free. This is even cheaper than my previous post when they had this on sale, and it now comes with two free bonuses:

  1. DCS-930L Wireless N cloud camera - it appears Wireless1 gives this to you directly, probably shipped in the same parcel.

  2. Bonus Wireless AC USB Adaptor. This one is by redemption directly from D-link, but no model number mentioned on the promo page so not sure which one it is.

As mentioned in previous deal, we had done heaps of research on ADSL2+ modem routers for the bro’s new digs, and the 2890AL was the best of bunch in terms of price/speed/features/futureproofability. It has good reviews (including editors choice) on goodgearguide/pcworld. Lots of writeup on whirlpool also a few honourable mentions on Ozbargain. In our personal experience, it works perfectly with my brother’s setup and haven’t heard a single complaint from him about dropouts or reboots being needed.

Looking at current pricing though the usual aggregators - staticice, getprice, myshopping, etc - next cheapest deal is MSY at $192 excl shipping and without the webcam freebie.

They also have an Asus laptop and some Netgear stuff in the newsletter (the prices already appear as below on the website so I'm guessing the code CYBERVIP will activate free shipping as the newsletter mentions it?):

  • Asus G750JS-T4193H 17.3" Core i7 Notebook Windows 8.1 - $2299 - looks like really good deal for the specs - the cheapest I could find this was $2,599 at CPL via StaticIce
  • Netgear PTV3000 PUSH2TV Home Entertainment Adapter - $49
  • Netgear EX6100 AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender - $79
  • Netgear EX6200 AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender - $99 - tempted on this too but not sure if I need, the usual ozbargain problem lol

Ok back to work (and browsing other Black Friday deals)…

  • Arghhh. Just got the tplink Archer D7 from Wireless1 as well
Wonder if they will honour if i like to change product
    Sighh!!

    Nice post anyway!!

  • which one is better? this or the D7?

    • I want to ask the same question.

    • Bulk of the reviews/forums online comparing the 2 are pretty much divided. Ultimately will boil down to personal preference. You won't be disappointed with either, but I think with the amount of bonus action going on - this one is the better deal right now.

      • Thanks bought the D-link. Couldn't resist.

      • Thanks ccrap for sharing the deal, this is a member only special =)

The promote code only required for DSL-2890AL.

The rest of the deals does not required the code:

        Asus G750JS-T4193H 17.3" Core i7 Notebook Windows 8.1 - $2299

        Netgear PTV3000 PUSH2TV Home Entertainment Adapter - $49

        Netgear EX6100 AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender - $79

        Netgear EX6200 AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender - $99

Enjoy the deals with free shipping, it ends tonight.

    • Been wondering the same thing. Especially seeing as I missed the deal on the D7. Have read reviews and the manual of each and still can't decide…

Finally jumped on this guy. Need one to handle my new game console and the bonus adapter means my old laptop doesn't get left out. Thanks for this!

  • Bought this for way more a year ago. Brilliant router!

  • +1

I heard it's a good modem router as well. Nice price with the bonuses too

  • If taking into account the bonuses, The modem router itself works out to be $31

  • Camera is via redemption (or at least it was for me)

  • I'm guessing the free AC USB adaptor is this one (RRP 59.95):

    http://www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/wireless-ac600-dual-b…

The Wireless AC Dual Band Nano USB Adapter (DWA-171) delivers powerful wireless AC technology to your desktop or notebook computer. Simply plug the adapter into an available USB port and connect to a wireless network to access a secure, high-speed internet connection – 2.4GHz (150Mbps) or 5GHz (up to 433Mbps).

Good deal though, I bought it about 6 months ago for 219 but only got free camera via redemption.

  • Bought two (yes, two) on Thursday in Wireless 1 Parramatta shop with no discount and no IP camera deal. The guy in the shop did not mention anything about the discount and free camera, which, it appears, was coming next day :(

The routers work great (I tested both), I would highly recommend this model, easy to set up, both WiFi frequencies provide better coverage then my old Fritz! modem router, very easy to set up, stable, and looks really cool.

Meanwhile I wrote to Wireless 1 asking could they somehow compensate me for paying considerably higher price and not getting the cameras - at least getting the cameras would be, I believe, decent of them. Will update here when/if Wireless 1 responds.

    • Hi Derek,

This is a weekend member special, please private message us and we will sort it out for you.

      Thanks

Just to let everyone know - Wireless 1 did the right thing, and all is good, I am happy customer :)
Strictly speaking they did not have to do anything (though I think I am a member, as I bought rather expensive NAS from them only a few moths ago!), but they decided to do decent thing. In summary: it is good to see a retailer offering competitive prices and excellent service, I can only highly recommend Wireless 1!

like I always said, when companies make a huge profit, they won't feel obligated to discount anything, it's a shame that people pay so high for electronic products that otherwise drop down significantly in value later down the track. those companies make a big killing ripping off the consumers i tell ya! e.g. HN who sold me a 5 mp fujifilm camera in 2007 for almost $300

  • About to pull the trigger on this.

Just verify for me that the difference it will make with my TPG issued Netcomm Wifi N300 Router will be jaw dropping good.

I suspect the transfer rates I'll get when moving 'legal backup copies of media' from my nearly ancient but functional HP NW8440 lapotop to my WD Mycloud will be worth it alone????

Or am I hampered by the USB 2.0???

    Thoughts??

    • +1

Just some ballpark figures of practical speeds:

WiFi speeds on this (assuming you are running Wireless AC at fairly close range) will be about 30MB/s
USB 2.0 practical speeds are also around 30MB/s (for wifi adapter/harddrive)
      So no bottle necks there.

As a comparison, using wired gigabit (available on this) will get you around 110+MB/s
Using wired on your Netcomm gives 11MB/s (100mbit), not sure how wifi will be though, probably around 8MB/s
Most harddrives that are usb 3.0 should be capable of 120-180MB/s

Although obviously depending on how many eneloops are in they way, your wifi speeds may be lower than this.

I'd think he should see a bit of an increase with a WD My Cloud. The hardware is decent enough to write at 40 MB/s (seems to be the number a few google searches brings up when trying to find the write speed of WD My Cloud when hooked up by gigabit), which would be bloody rare to see a wireless N300 connection close to that speed.

On the other hand the USB sharing won't matter as it can't read or write to a HDD more than a few MB/s on either USB3 or 2 port.

Read speed of 9 MB/s and write speeds of 5 MB/s, which is typical of router USB shares with the itty bitty CPU and RAM those things have.

    • hi kfuerza,

This will be way faster than the Netcomm N300 you have and it will provide greater coverage.

      • Thanks everybody. Ordered one and looking forward to the increased stability and speed.

  • Just bit the bullet I'm upgrading from a tpg netcomm that drops out to the shit house.

    • +1

you won't regret… the range, speed and stability is awesome.

  • I think it's got usb 3.0 and 2.0

  • Awesome deal! Just got one. Im assuming they send the bonus camera and the adapter is via redemption?

    • where my plus at :P

and correct, they should just send you the camera with the modem but the usb is by redemption. You have till mid Jan next year to send in the redemption form but do it asap as dlink can take a while and xmas is coming up too.

      • Hi ccrap,

The promote does last til mid Jan next year.

Best to do the redemption within the first 14 days of purchase (invoice day ), as this is the time frame d-link allows for redemption.

If you guys experience any problems redeeming it, please email us and we will escalate to D-Link for you guys.

        • thanks for clarifying, missed that the redemption form says do it 14 days from invoice!

    • Hi kiveler,

The Bonus Camera is an Wireless 1 exclusive give away, it will be sent out with your order along with the DSL-2890AL. =)

  • My main concern, have experienced a reasonably high failure rate on modem/routers or rodent mouters is how painful, timeconsuming and expensive repairs are.

I previously spoke to Dlink on this and I got this pretty poor response. I note wireless1 doesn't have a reasonable policy specified on their website (i.e. consumer law compatible) on how they handle repairs. i.e. making customers foot the bill for back and forth on repairs.

So the question is has anyone had experience with these guys (i.e. interstate from them) So do I get it from msy instead because they do handle the returns process in the event of a failure.

    e.g. Dlink's attitude to repairs.

    Thanks for your enquiry.
D-Link warranty RMA is located in our HQ at North Ryde NSW. If you wish to return a faulty device to us after obtaining an RMA number through our tech support then the product must be returned to us at YOUR expense and we will return the replacement to you at our expense.
Alternatively please consider buying from a local retailer and checking with them if they will do this on your behalf as part of their policy. Most national retailers will happily do this for you or even replace the product on the spot depending on the circumstances.

    • hi phil99,

D-link has 3 years warranty with this product, for Networking products we provide replacement warranty if you have purchased with Wireless 1. We also cover postage sending back to us if it's within the 14 days DOA period ( after you contact D-Link to troubleshoot the problem, as you know sometimes it can be just a software/firmware issues, and you are just a phone call away from getting it replace, don't forget to get the RMA # from D-Link ).

After the 14 days, you can choose to:

      1. Send it back to us and we can still have it replace within the Warranty period ( postage sending back to us in this case is not covered when it's outside DOA period )

      2. Contact your Local D-Link service Centre if you do not wish to send back to us and have it repaired/replace by D-Link.

Hope we have answered your questions.

      • Hi Rep

Not worried about software issues, mainly hardware faults and firmware issues that never get resolved in a reasonable timeframe.

Here is what needs to be met:

        http://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/shopping/refunds-and-returns/…

costing costs for DOA of 14 days isn't sufficient to cover the terms of consumer affairs above.

Would consider buying from you if you were willing to adjust your terms to abide by consumer affairs guidelines above.

Dlink seem to have cut back the quality of their warranty service since the good old days so ultimately I think we'd be leaning on retailer support with their products.

        • +1

ACCC and NSW rules (both use identical wording quoted below) are different:
          https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…
"You are responsible for returning the product, unless the cost of doing so is significant. In this case, the business must organise and pay for the return or exchange".
This is raising interesting point: for a business registered and located in NSW, are NSW and ACCC rules overriding Consumer Affairs Victoria? Whatever is the case, I find Wireless 1 support to be well above the industry average.

As far as D-Link goes, they (as well as all other manufacturers I know) formally do not guarantee any software or hardware suitability for any specific task, or any resolution of anything which may be perceived as an issue by consumers. Typically they try to do their best within limits of fast changing technology… but provide no guarantees, and no firmware development for older products. It was like that yesterday, ten years ago, twenty years go, and in the "good old days" thirty years ago (yes, I am in the industry that long).

Actually if you care to check whirlpool.net.au forum discussion for this specific modem/router there is a D-Link person who is active there, responds to any reasonable question, and is passing user recommendation to D-Link designers. This is rare - Netgear NAS is the only other forum I am aware of with similar excellent support and manufacturer participation. Many forums (just one example: "official" QNAP NAS forum) could not care less about the users.

        • @derek324:

I don't see any indication that they wireless1 beyond ACL requirements in their support, in fact they haven't even responded to confirm if they comply with the basic one line statement.

No one can legally not guarantee their product is not fit for purpose so I would not worry about those outrages statements you've read on various websites. Even software vendors legally can't get away with that. There is definately a "grey area" of what is a critical defect and what is a "feature" but thats not what I'm talking about.

Frankly I don't care about that minor issues only concerned about the product being "basically" fit for purpose, which I've found not to be the case with a few brands out there. e.g. issues like wireless won't connect ipad or iphones and manufacturer never releases any fixes.

I might have a chat with the dlink guy on whirlpool actually as you suggest (thanks for the suggestion), I know a few manufacturers (e.g. corsair) try to pull the wool over your eyes the first time on warranty then come good on subsequent contact attempts.

Too bad wireless1 hasn't confirmed their compliance to ACL in VIC.

  • I didn't get my order confirmation. What's happening?

    • +1

      Hi Khey,

Please PM me your number, we will check for you.

      Thanks,

  • +1

Home grade routers are beyond crap and do not provide stability, for the first few months you have this device, it will work without any problems, then as time progresses, you'll find ADSL dropouts will become more regular and your device will stop responding when you really need it to work, the future to make money from home grade routers is really good because device turn around is high but for consumers, prepare to purchase a dud.. the last thing you want to do is restart your router once every 2 days, its a real pain in the ass.. I'm not saying this comment to target this device, its more to do with all devices for home use.

Oh, and as soon as a product is replaced by a better model, they will stop releasing firmware upgrades, so if you're on a firmware that provides no issues, don't upgrade your firmware for the fun of it..

  • I havent received my order confirmation either ?

    • Hi maheroz,

Please PM your order number as the other members do, I've confirmed all their orders are received and being processed or send out today.
