    I don't understand what's so GREAT about chromecast !!

    • +15

i think because ozbargain dream is to have one, like american mans dream have one million dollars

      • +1

        OK Niko Belic

    • Because of Netflix and Hulu if you are interest.

$35+$5 shipping not so good as last time.

    • +7

I'd much rather a full fledged ethernet / 1080p capable XBMC machine. Ideally something which can render the thumbnails quickly too on a big library (so not v.slow flash ram in it, like the Apple TV2)

      • +1

pretty much this, which is why you spend 3x more on a Roku 3 and actually enjoy it

        • -1

Is that a good option, or one of those dedicated Android devices? I've got a HTPC but I'll be damned if I know what to recommend to friends in the sub $200 range which kicks ass

      • +2

Good luck building an XBMC for $40!

        • You can pick up a raspberry pi for about $70 complete. I've got one for each tele in the househould.

        • It does a lot more, a LOT more.

        • @hamwhisperer:

Sorry, I should have made my point a bit more clear (as opposed to being cheeky…).

The Chromecast and an XBMC/HTPC are aimed at slightly different users - so the price points will be different (we're close to apples and oranges territory here!). Sure the Chromecast doesn't do as much, but it comes at a price to match. For someone who is looking for a REALLY cheap setup, the Chromecast is perfect. For someone who is looking for much more, a HTPC (or a games console) would be for them.

In the interests of being transparent: I don't have a Chromecast, and I don't intend to buy one (because I have really really slow internet). I have a gaming PC, ultrabook and a PS4 (and a TV), all of which meets my needs already.

I have heard of the raspberry pi but I guess it's just one of those things where I don't see a need for it in my setup (or a Chromecast, htpc, WDTV, AppleTV, etc…). I'm not ruling out having one/some/all of them in the future though (if I ever move to a place with faster bloody internet!) - I am a geek and ozbargainer after all!

Chromecast turned my 5-6 year old 55" Full-HD Plasma into a Smart TV which works far better than any of the media players and Android TV adaptors I've used in the past (admittedly a few years ago now). $40 very well spent and means that I wont be tempted to replace the TV any time soon :)

      • +1

Never get rid of a plasma until it dies, far superior picture to lcd.

        • -1

How can you make a statement like that if you don't even know what model TV he has? It's possibly not even Full HD.

        • LED is better tho and uses nearly a quarter of the power

        • @pmupsinep: What part of "55" Full-HD Plasma" don't you get?

        • @asa79: I clicked plus accidentally on your comment.
          It should've been negative, sorry.

    • I don't get it either. Mine's plugged in, but it rarely gets used, I will sometimes cast a youtube video on to the big screen, but apart from that it's a waste of an HDMI socket for me.
I don't get netflix either, sure it's cheap, sure it's on demand… but there's really not much new interesting content… 4 me.

      • why netflix? have you try popcorntime?

        • -2

We are talking about legal stuff why don't you say torrent.

        • @superforever:
          Who's "we"…?

The discussion is comparing product features/cost/ease of use.

        • -2

          @Utopian:

No I am replying @callmejon because he talked about popcorntime.

        • I has a PopCornHour… that's actually quite good.
Ultimately nothing beats HTPC + MPC-HC + Codecs properly configured.

        • @raybies:
          Who needs/uses codecs anymore?

        • @Utopian: OMG… anything that decodes or encodes.

        • @raybies:
To spell it out… Who still gets conned into needing/installing an internet of crap codecs. Decent machines/players have everything they need.

Chinese made eneloops just don't have the same appeal to me any more after seeing those results how they are inferior to Japanese versions - guess you get what you pay for still applies.

    • Yep, may as well just get the Aldi lsd's now if you can't get loops cheaper, $6.99 for a 4 pack of AA or AAA.
      Made in China also.

      • ALDI LSDs are worth the trip

  • +2

I accidentally used the expired code XMASGIFT last week which was a half price shipping code from last year (saw wrong expiry date) but ended up getting $20 discount. Not sure if it still works now but you could try. A friend who has a new account said it was showing Coupon conditions have not been met while my account is showing You have reached the usage limit of this coupon.

wonder what the qualification is. Didnt work for me.

        • I had one account worked. The others are not working.

      • +2

I am just getting Coupon conditions have not been met.

      • Me too. Got a PS4 controller for $48 delivered with XMASGIFT code. Nice deal!

    • Found an old forgotten account that I opened in 2008 to work with the XMASGIFT code.
The one opened this year didn't work.
      Thanks Fishy

      • +2

I opened my account in 2008 as well. Still remember those days when COTD only had 1 deal a day and sometimes CatchAThon. Items were usually dispatched within a couple of days as well.

    • XMASGIFT not working for me. Must be targeted like the BDAY one

  • Eneloops are the best.

  • hehe i can't get in, you've all crashed the site!

    Example: http://shopping.scoopon.com.au/event/43359/product/eneloop-a…

Maybe OP or Mod should add to description.

  • Got a $31.50 Chromecast, thanks OP

  • The xmasgift gave me a $20 discount! Suggest you all try it too!

    • Sorry, can you please elaborate? Thanks :)

Edit: Nvm, I don't know how you got it to work though :(

  • Hrrrm looks like this is expired? "You have reached the usage limit of this coupon"

Edit: Ah yes I did use this coupon code a while ago. Just check your previous orders more than likely if you are getting that message you have already used it.

  • A good stocking filler, bluetooth speaker with wireless microphone. Here is the link. $9.95 on Catch selling for $66+ on ebay and $99.95 on apple store

    • WOW i knew apple was a rip off but i had no idea it was that bad. nice find johnno

    • Microphone only works with app as per reviews. SO kind a useless unless you need a Bluetooth speaker. Just keep in mind, that the speaker is not portable.

  • xmasgift still working for anyone ?

    • Yup!

      • Ok did a chat with COTD guys, it will work for any COTD account who have not placed any order in the year 2014 :P

        • Cool. Also note that you cant just make an account now and get it to work

    • nope.

  • Logitech UE 6000, good deal at $49.98.
    http://m.catchoftheday.com.au/event/40248/product/logitech-u…

Looks like they have Black and White in stock at the moment.

  • I've got this "conditions have not been met." after added XMASGIFT code.

  • AA Eneloops
    AAA Eneloops
    $10.98 ($10 credit + BDAY)

    Chromecast
$21.50 (same as above, 2nd account)

I've never bought into the Chromecast hype but quick research tells me $21.50 delivered is a great price so I'm gonna have a play.

Also got the Samsung 64gb PRO MicroSDXC for $17.50 USD today (Amazon) in a one off stroke of luck (it's now back to $51) so I think it's been pretty good pickings today :)

    • yeah but you got to remember that it's perceived value unless you resell for a profit

      • +1

True. I was always going to buy more Eneloops though, so $5.49 a pack has saved me money.

The Chromecast and the 64GB MicroSDXC card, technically I don't even need them but I'll put them to some use.

        I have a problem :)

        • haha yeah buying stuff you kinda don't need. but if you workout how much you save or stuff you actually need boom plenty of room to offset stuff you don't need.

        • @Chef-Johnson:

          Works for me :D
