this is exactly the problem with internet and forums, one moron makes a mistake somewhere and blames it on hardware and other lemmings blindly follow caus they dont have the intellect to do anything else..

i guess you didnt read the whole thread you pasted did you?

What kind of RAID controller were you using? soft or hardware based? I have eSATA enclosures that have built-in hardware RAID and haven't had any problems with these drives being in it.

I've had a couple Seagate 5TBs that I pulled out of enclosures and used in my array for the last few months as well with no issues. One is my parity and one is a data drive. Like i said, no issues so far.

i wish they forced people to get a licence before commenting in the intarwebs…. some people just dont qualify to voice an opinion….

I stopped reading after "The disk locked up while trying to copy data to it".
Is he talking about a car's brakes or a hard drive?

The only thing that will stop you opening up a 2TB or larger external HDD and using it internally is if your PC lacks a UEFI and a GPT formatted OS disk (and hence won't be able to allocate any space beyond the 2TB mark), in which case all you need to do is install a device driver from Seagate and that'll take all of 2 minutes (a very painless procedure, but just make sure you do it before moving any data to the new disk).

  • Do these external drives from Amazon come with AU plugs?

    • i bought a 4 tb one a while back and it didnt, came with a us plug, but you can pick one up on ebay fairly cheap i got a genuine seagate one for $14

      • past deals on the 3 and 4tb have said its only the aus ones that come with universal power bricks, the amazon ones come with US only wall warts so its probably safe to assume these are the same

    • didnt see that, it is only a lightning deal now though so will be over in 2 hours

  • Dupe, no?

    • +1

im not sure it is a lightning deal so idk if the guidelines state anything about that???

EDIT- Not a dupe that previous bargain link directs to a different priced hardrive

      previous link here- http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J0O5R2I

      • Right you are, different model. Thanks for pointing that out. BTW, I bought two of the Backup Plus from the other deal. Obviously have yet to receive them. I wonder which model is best?

  • +1

The other was a different external enclosure design, and the other one looks newer. This looks like the old model. internal drives probably the same

    • The more recently manufactured Seagate Expansion drives ship with newer firmware, which drastically changes the HDDs idling behaviour.

  • +1 for including AC adapter in deal.

  • Is this the best price we are likely to get for the black friday deals? It's basically the same price as this deal that has been up for awhile now- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/171453

  • Received this deal in the mail a few days ago and i am not impressed…
The product had clearly been refurbished; had a large scratch on the black enclosure and on closer inspection after i had carefully removed the hdd from the enclosure i could see fingerprints all over the hdd holding bracket (obviously not from me).
Still waiting for my AC adapter so i have not yet had the chance to yet test it out, but i think the first thing i will be doing when i can is checking for bad sectors on the HDD. Very disappointing.
