OzBargain 2014 Christmas Charity Donations - $14,580 to Charities of Your Choice

UPDATE 18 Dec: The poll has finished and the top 4 charities for this Christmas are:

  • Doctors without Borders
  • RSPCA
  • Beyond Blue
  • Cancer Council Australia

They will be receiving $3,645 of donation each. Thanks to everyone who participated.

UPDATE 14 Dec: Please vote on the charities now we have all the suggestions. There are 258 unique commenters at this point thus OzBargain will donate $12,000 + $10 x 258 = $14,580 this Christmas. The top 4 voted charities will receive $3,645 of donation.

It's December and OzBargain has planned to donate at least $12,000 to the charities this Christmas. We have already made more than $50,000 contributions to various charity organisations in Australia over the last 3 years, and for this year the plan is a little bit different. We will be taking suggestions from the commenters again, similar to our last EoFY donation. However to be fair to each of the charities suggested, votes will not be allowed until I have got a full list of suggestions. So basically it would be in two stages — first I am getting the suggestions from the commenters, and then I'll reset votes on all the poll options so all of them would start out equal.

Moreover, like last year's Christmas donations, we will be donating $12,000 + $10 x number of unique commenters in this thread until this Saturday night. So for example if 300 user accounts commented in this post, we will then donate $12,000 + $10 x 300 = $15,000 to the charities.

We will pick the top 4 charities based on number of votes, and then equally distribute the total amount to those charity groups.

Timeline

The timeline would go like this:

  • 9 Dec — start taking suggestions
  • 13 Dec 11:59PM — suggestions closed, votes reset to 0 and let the voting start! Also count the number of unique commenters so far and update the total donation amount.
  • 17 Dec 11:59PM — voting closed. Top 4 charity groups chosen, which we will be donating to.
  • 18-24 Dec — OzBargain will donate to those charities picked

Now let the suggestion come in! If you are commenting on this post directly (not replying someone's comment), you shall see "Suggestion" there above the comment box. Put your choice of charity there + some reasons why this charity is worth donating to for this Christmas, and I'll add your suggestions to the poll.

Since it's Christmas, please think about which charity organisation would be good to donate to.

Suggestion Guidelines

Just a reminder. If you are suggesting a charity

  • Make sure "Suggestion" field is filled when you are making a top-level comment, so your suggestion would be added to the poll. It would be in the approval queue and I'll approve them when I get a chance.

  • In your comments please also link to the website. Under Poll Options you can click on the time to go to linked comment where the suggestion was made in the first place. It would be useful for others to see what the charity is about and able to go to the website to check it out.

Terms and Conditions

There are some rules…

    Suggested Monash Children's Hospital

Fantastic work Ozbargain team, there are many great suggestions above!

I would like to suggest Monash Children's Hospital - http://www.monashhealthfoundation.com.au/event/newmonashchil…

My 2yo nephew has had a rough start to life, and we've spent many nights in the children's section of the Clayton Monash hospital, most recently an overnight stay a week ago due to a bad seizure. The staff are brilliant, although more resources would not go astray, particularly as the beginnings of a new hospital are underway. Unfortunately we've been told to expect more hospital visits as my nephew grows, so I'd love to see some funds go this direction.

  • Excellent contribution OzBargain Team.

I would like to suggest Kids Under Cover. Kids Under Cover supports vulnerable young people between the ages of 12 and 25 who are either already homeless or at risk of homelessness.

  • I have to go with Royal Children.

I think the work carried out by them is very important

  • Cancer Council Pink Ribbon

    Save the Children

These guys regularly pop up on Humble Bundle. Rated four stars on Charity Navigator.

Though this year I'm rather interested in prostate cancer research. It seems to be an area that is neglected and there is still no known cause for it.

  • $10

  • altomic beer fund - they do great work.

    • IF only 100% of the donations go toward beer, unfortunately I heard last year much of Altomic Inc's funds went towards drugs and hookers :(

      • that's an unmitigated lie……..it was only 27%

    Suggested Rare Cancers Australia

    OK, here is my tilt.

    http://www.rarecancers.org.au

My reason for proposing this is having witnessed first hand the devastation of getting a dealt a shitty hand in the cancer lottery.

It's clear we are a million miles away from effective treatment on the lesser profitable and therefore less researched cancers. Here is the stat- every year 44,000 Australians are diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Every year 24,000 Australians will die from this.

    Let's do some good!

  • Suggested HammondCare Health and Hospitals

I would like to suggest HammondCare Health and Hospitals, my nominated charity for regular donations from me, in particular Braeside Hospital, which is currently fundraising to build a cook fresh kitchen for the patients.
They are doing very good work in looking after vulnerable patients, in Rehab; palliative care; in particular Mental Health services for Older People and people suffering from dementia; which are normally not considered as "attractive" services for donations or community support.
For more information, go to www.hammond.com.au

  • My nan knits cuddley bears for BEAR COTTAGE. It's a place for very ill kids, most of them with a terminal illness.
When they check in they will have a homemade bear waiting for them on their bed.
    I think they deserve a donation :)

  • Scott Loxley is walking 15,000km around Australia in Stormtrooper armour (well, Sandtrooper to be precise) to raise money for Monash Children's Hospital. He is doing this truly solo, with the occasional friend or supporter sticking around for a few days. Scott has just cracked the 10,000km mark, but he still needs lots of donations. All donations go directly to Monash Children's, Scott doesn't get anything out of this for himself.

Scott has an Everyday Hero page at: https://newmonashchildrenshospital.everydayhero.com/au/storm…

You can find Scott on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/StormingAustralia

Even if he doesn't directly get donations from OzBargain, I encourage the readers to go out and throw a few $$ into his Everyday Hero. 15,000km is a long bloody way. Doing it in Stormtrooper armour is even worse. He deserves some donations, but if you can't do that, just leave him some words of encouragement.

    • I think it would count as the same suggestion as bobsi18's here. Definitely an interesting way of fundraising.

      • Close enough. Funds would be going to the same place.

Suggested Street Swags (For The Homeless)

    Street Swags

A bag with room for extra belongings, the street swag is made of super lightweight waterproofed canvas with a high-density foam mattress. It offers its users a degree of comfort, warmth and protection from the weather. Designed for those living on the streets, its discrete appearance and camouflage colours, offer some safety for those who need to be invisible.

Street swags has empowered and brought together all levels of community. Corporate, and private entities, donate funds to sponsor the street swags. Prisoners sew, gaining work readiness skills and qualifications. Aboriginal Communities gain government employment, home industry skills and their finished product for their families. School children roll and package street swags with blankets, pillows, hygiene packs and knitted winter essentials. Numerous aid organisations, hospitals, community groups and volunteers distribute them across Australia.

Someone negged this without providing any context as to why. I've upvoted to restore the balance, as I can't see anything obvious for this charity that might warrant it.

If there is a genuine reason for this, negger should share it, as this might influence the voting decisions for a range of people. Otherwise, bravo on the low and anonymous attack.

      • Thanks :)

  • +$10 and happy holidays !

  • Just here for the extra $10 donation

  • Suggested Habitat For Humanity Australia

    Suggested Youngcare

    http://www.youngcare.com.au
This organisation helps young people who have illnesses or injuries that would usually see them placed in an aged care home as there is nowhere else for them to get the care they need. They also provide support for families such as respite .

  • Suggested ARDA Australia

ARDA Australia. I recently helped volunteer for a couple weeks at a house for street children in Bolivia, and ADRA helps support such programs.

+1 for OzB for giving back to the community!

    • 10 =)
  • Once again, great work OzB!

Sorry - It appears that I don't follow instructions well and voted early.

  • Suggested The Smith Family

The Smith Family - Christmas Appeal
    http://www.thesmithfamily.com.au/campaigns/christmas-girl
    http://www.thesmithfamily.com.au/get-involved/give-toys-or-b…

Since it's Christmas, there's plenty of disadvantaged kids who would love to enjoy a pleasant Christmas.

Would encourage anyone to please donate a present or give your time to help sort and deliver presents.

    • They do great stuff for homeless people etc…but imo toys for children over Christmas rates fairly low on my scale of things to support when people in 3rd world countries are dying because they don't have basic water/sanitation or die from preventable things like malaria and cholera which we don't see here…

Maybe I had a tough upbringing but from the age of 8 onwards I never got Xmas presents anyways…

      • Parents never bought toys for me and all my christmas presents were regifted. I remember hiding a transformers toy I really liked in the store room and I hid there whenever I wanted to play with it (found out in the end lol). Don't judge my parents by that though, they did so much more for me and I had a great youth.

  • Suggested Emerge Women & Children's Support Network

Suggestion for this awesome org that supports victims of domestic violence.

    http://emergesupport.org.au/

More than one in three Australian women who have had an intimate partner, have experienced violence from a partner or ex-partner
1 in 4 children in Victoria have witnessed family violence against their mother or step-mother
There were 29 family violence deaths in Victoria in 2013

  • Can we vote for more than one charity?

    • If you have multiple accounts you can

  • Keep up the good work.

    Suggested Oxfam Australia

    Oxfam Australia http://www.oxfam.org.au/

    • Relatively low overhead/administration costs
    • Focus on solving poverty by helping people help themselves (animals for eggs/milk/breeding, water sources, etc)
    • Doesn't align with any religion but allows any (or none)
  • Very generous scotty :)

  • +1

I WOULD LIKE TO VOTE FOR UNHCR, united nations high commission for refugees or EFF, Electronic Frontier Foundation.

  • Great work. Happy to be part of OzB.

  • +1

Medicine Sans Frontiers - This has already been suggested, but they're pretty good. They were founded during the Biafran conflict in Nigeria because the Red Cross was unwilling to go into the conflict zone. They go to the dodgiest, most war torn places on the planet, and have lost dozens of their volunteers/employees. Now I just have to remember to vote on Sunday.

Nice work OzBargain. Under the facade of batteries and chromecasts is a heart of gold!

Sanfilippo is a rare and fatal condition. Affected children have a life expectancy of just 12-20 years and there is currently no effective treatment or cure. But there is hope and you can help make it a reality.

  • Good work OB.

  • important, great work!

  • Suggested Sea Shepherd Australia

Always been following & supporting SSA , gotta admire how they put their lives at risk for the precious seas creatures, especially vs those barbaric Jap slaughterhouse. We have enough fish to eat! No need for whales & dolphins!

    Suggested 300 Blankets

300 Blankets is a great charity that provides the warmth of blankets and friendship to people experiencing homelessness in Victoria. They also work together with existing homelessness charities and services to ensure they have blankets to give to the needy.

  • $10 tax deductible

  • Trance is love. Trance is life. +$10

  • Add $10 for me too

  • I can not understand why people didn't vote for something like doctors without boarders which effect a lot more people.

    • +1

      Because:

      IMPORTANT

Do not vote yet until coming Sunday. I have spelt out the reason above, and the votes will be reset at 12AM this Sunday.

    • +2

      That's because voting doesn't start/count until Sunday…

We should make an exception for those voting for Alzheimer's Australia though..its not their fault…

    • Perhaps because we all think that doctors should be required to host boarders - and backpackers and various other itinerants - in their homes.
Médecins Sans Frontières - or Doctors without Borders - however is a very noble cause and worth supporting and is on the list.

    • I wont vote for them because of the tactics they use to get vulnerable people to sign up to regular, large payments. Spent one day in the job and never went back.
