I've given up buying from CellarMasters normally, I don't like what Woolworths is doing to the industry and most wines are "hollow logs" from virtual wineries, so it takes a lot to get me interested.

The CellarMasters Hidden Label Barossa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 has a list price of $18 a bottle, with the 50WINE code it goes down to $8 a bottle. But if we don't know what it is it's not a deal, luckily it is listed with the following tasting notes:

At the 2013 Sydney International Wine Competition, one of the judges commented that this wine exhibited tight closed black fruit and spiced oak on the nose, with plenty of spicy fruit and firm oak on the palate. One taste, and you'll be commenting simply "Yum."

Checking the 2013 Sydney International Wine Competition webpage in the Lighter Bodied Dry Red Wines section we can see it is the Sister's Run Bethlehem Block 2011.

Judges' Comments:

Marian Jansen
Blackcurrant aromas with red and black fruits, sour plum and iodine notes and a black tea fine grained tannic finish.
Xenia Irwin MW
Tight closed black fruit and spiced oak on the nose. Plenty of tight spicy fruit and firm oak on the palate. Still young. Some cherry fruit to finish. Good length and firm fine tannins. With food a rich intensity develops.
Brent Marris
A green herbal nose but ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit characters. Fine grained tannins. Good length. Very balanced. A good match. The leafiness of the Cabernet works well with the lamb and the fruit sweetness comes through.
Warren Gibson
Riper berry fruit. Classical Cabernet nose. Good balance and weight. The tannins in balance. An excellent match with the dish. The sweetness perhaps dominating.
Adrian Atkinson
A dense purple inky colour with black to the rim. A lovely cassis and cola aroma. Very vibrant. With the food the wine comes over as simplistic and juvenile.
Wilfred Wong
A deep ruby colour. Very good ripe black fruit aromas. aromas. A fine depth. Tight on the palate. A little bit of blackcurrant flavours. Brooding. Young. A bit diffused in the aftertaste.

  • never heard of this wine

  • At 8 bucks a bottle it's priced correctly in my mind. 2011 was a terribly vintage for the barossa. Good deal, thanks for posting.

    • Given it's a light bodied Cab Sav (more "European" style) I'm hoping that the growing conditions of 2011 would have suited it well.
