Great camera body with two lenses. One of the best mirrorless camera bodies w/ a great sensor.
Better for someone who isn't going to go on and buy heaps of lenses (as the system doesn't have a huge lens range compared to micro four-thirds).

Part of their '12 days of Christmas' - different deals everyday.
Saw it in store but it is also available online with $9.95 shipping.
?Might be available for buy-now pickup in store.

Cheapest I've seen with both kit lenses. 55-210mm usually $200 on its own.

    • The camera isn't fully water-proof milk-proof ;-)

  • so cheap

the 55-210 is a rubbish lens though

camera is great with the 16-50 kit lens

    • +2

You could sell it and keep the body and 16-50 for $500-550.
Take it overseas and get the GST back on TRS and its a total steal.

But I suspect for most people, the 55-210mm would be great for kids playing sport, at the zoo etc.

    • +2

the 55-210 is a rubbish lens though

What makes it a "rubbish lens"?

It is on a number of "recommend" lists for the Sony E-mount system.

There are plenty of people who are happy with the lens after paying full price for it, so as a "free" inclusion how could it be a bad thing ?!?

    • +5

The 55-210 is not bad. No worse than the telephoto zoom kit lens from Canon or Nikon.

Good lens comes at a cost, usually more expensive than the camera itself.

    • +1

Great? Funny you say that, because the 16-50 regularly gets rubbished as the worst kit lens across manufacturers.

Having previously immediately onsold my Canon 18-55 for profit, these are my first kit lenses to be used and I gotta say they're OK. Especially at this price (there are places selling body only for more).

The man (woman?) has a point, shouldn't be negged for it: http://www.photozone.de/sony_nex/729-sony55210f4563nex?start…

55-210mm or similar kit lenses are generally useless, you have to go to all the trouble of changing lenses for average quality, and no flexibility, 55mm start makes it useless as a walk around lens.

With a camera and sensor this good, the lens is basically junk. Save your money and aim to get a decent lens in 6 months, or just get a different camera. Or resell I guess.

There is a great 18-105 F4, but I am sure it costs a bit. The main problem is the lack of decent lenses for Sony E mount.

      • +5

The 16-50/55-210 kit lenses are more than enough for beginners. Better glass won't automatically make you a better photography.

        • I started on the 16-50 powerzoom, found out why it was 'not good' and why I needed to upgrade.

Now I'm taking better photos from my phone than my friends who never bothered to learn and stick with auto on their DSLRs.

Having said that, the 16-50 and 55-210 are by no means 'good', but that doesn't make them useless. They are optically stabilised and should be more than enough for impressive everyday photos. If I went back to them today, I reckon I could take a few shots that would be hard to believe they were taken with those mentioned lenses.

        • -4

Here come the neggers again, shooting people for having an (informed) opinion. More of this and I won't bother posting information to help others make a choice.

I never suggested it makes you a better photographer - take that strawman somewhere else to play with.

You're combining a high quality state of the art camera and sensor with mediocre optics, and committing to endless lens swapping. The first question a beginner needs to figure out is if they really need an interchangeable lens camera. Most don't realize that if you don't plan to spend as least as much as you paid for the body + kit lens for better lenses in the next 12 months, there is no point in getting an ILC. Not with the amazing range of compacts available, get a G16, G1X II, X30 or something similar, the flexibility of a 24 - 120mm-ish beats 18-55 + 55-200 every single time.

There is a point to 18-105/135/200/300 superzoom lenses. There is a point to primes. There is a point to quality telephoto zooms, 70-200s etc. There is no point to a 18-55 + 55-200 twin kit. I have never met anyone who made good use of the two, and was happy to constantly swap. That 55-200 will stay in the bag, except maybe on a zoo trip.

Of course you can take decent photos with them. That does not mean you made the right choice for your needs. I have never met anyone carrying a twin kit who wouldn't have been better served by something different.

        • @plmko:

That's great. Except having a kit lens isn't a necessary stage of learning that makes you better in the long run.

        • +1

@scynaz: Are you forgetting the big size advantage of the 16-50 kit lens? It's pretty much a pancake zoom with OIS and powerzoom that starts at 24mm.

          @scynaz:

          Here come the neggers again

What are you on about, I was replying to Orpheus, not you.

And yes I agree kit lens doesn't make beginners better, but what's a beginner to use? A $1000 Zeiss or a $700 18-105? I mean the concept of buying $600 camera is already a big leap for many and now you want to say ignore kit lenses because they're "mediocre", go out and buy a lens that's more expensive than your already expensive camera, nah I don't think that even makes sense for beginners.

You've missed my point, if you thought I was trying to say Kit lens are fine and all, what I was trying to say is that learning is more important than getting too bogged down on lens choices. But whatever you want to draw from my comment, it certainly wasn't directed at you, so I don't know what you're trying to say

        • -3

          @plmko:

Was referring to the people negging my posts. Five in two minutes for the last one. I'll go back to leeching rather than contributing here.

$600 and a beginner - you buy an RX100, or G1X II or X30 or similar. Look for deals like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142995

If you're sure you need multiple lenses in the future, and know exactly why, then spend at least $300 on the lens, get ONE decent lens. Second hand if you can't afford new. Get a 16-50 / 18-55 kit zoom along with it if you want by all means. But one good lens - a 35mm prime, a 50mm prime, a 18-105/135, a 17-50 2.8, 17-70 F4, 10-20 wide angle, 100mm prime / macro, 15-85, pick based on what you want to shoot. Multiple lenses are a huge compromise in terms of flexibility and convenience especially with the quality high end compacts can give you. I haven't seen a single compelling argument here for why a 18-55 + 55-210 is the right compromise for anyone.

        • +3

@scynaz: So instead of using the free cheap lens this comes with, your advice is the only alternative is to spend a few thousand dollars on high quality primes and fast zooms or use a fixed compact with no EVF and no telephoto and no flexibility for changing lenses in the future? Right…

        • +2

          @scynaz:

$600 and a beginner - you buy an RX100, or G1X II or X30 or similar.

So why aren't people allowed to buy a $600 interchangeable lens camera? - it means future lens options that the compact built-in lens cameras can't ever possibly cover.

Multiple lenses are a huge compromise in terms of flexibility and convenience

If you think that, then interchangeable lens camera systems are not for you…
Most people who have the ability to change the lenses on their camera system would say the exact opposite ;-)

      • +1

I don't understand - the review you linked to is hardly a bad review for a lens…

According to the link the lens "performed better than expected"
"Sony's OSS seems to be as efficient as the more established systems by Nikon and Canon. The AF is virtually silent and as such also very usable for shooting movies. A really nice aspect, and that's typical for all Sony E lenses so far, is the build quality. A kit tele lens with a body made of mag-alloy is pretty much unique and it's certainly a differentiator when comparing different systems in shops out there - a smart move by Sony for sure here."
*"The lens is a bit underdesigned for the use on the NEX 7 but it remains a relatively decent, attractively priced option."

and all of the above review comments are based on paying for the lens, not getting it for basically nothing…

55-210mm or similar kit lenses are generally useless

Maybe they are "useless" for you, but surely you don't believe everybody in the world has the same usage requirements as you ?

        Save your money

Huh? The lens is being offered essentially "free" if you consider that the price is great just for the camera and 16-50 lens alone..
How can you "save" money by not "buying" the bonus lens ?

    • +1

i shoot the birds photos with this 55-210 lens , not bad link you may try different setting.

      • Nice pics :)

    • I am sure you have never used it and saying based on little reviews on it. Many of the reviews also say the same about 16-50 mm compared to 18-55 mm lens.

55-210mm Its not a day to day lens and I hope none of the zoom lens is. It is good for sports and wildlife pics.

Its good to have it in kit unless you have money to buy 18-200 mm.

      • Sports? With a 55-210 4.5-6.3? Oh my.

Some shots with the Mark 1 G1x: https://www.flickr.com/search?sort=relevance&text=g1x%20bird…

The Mark II, which is much better, was $600 in a deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142995

        https://www.flickr.com/groups/canong1x/pool/

No fumbling with lenses and camera bags. This is a camera you can have on you all the time. If you want pocketable go for RX100, but you lose out on zoom range.

        • Yes. You heard correct. Sports!! You can do that with this camera. At least I have done it. It is cropped to 82.5mm- 315mm in APS-C sensor and with this great zooming capacity, you can do wild life pictures or sports with fast auto focus capacity of A6000.
Neither I am a photo professional nor I am not here to teach you photography mate. But Stop trolling and if you don't like it, move on mate.
Did you not say you wont suggest more?

Secondly I never compared it to any other camera. I dont know if anyone asked that either and why you compared that to this.( that post got 4 votes!!)

          Sports? With a 55-210 4.5-6.3? Oh my.

Why not? At the widest aperture of f6.3 on the long end you should still get fast enough shutter speed at a respectable ISO for outdoor sports during the day.

        • -1

          @Gaggy:

That's not the point. The point is if you're spending $700 on something for sports and wildlife, this kit is a very poor choice.

        • @scynaz: $700 on sports and wildlife ??? Did I say that?
We were discussing the free lens 55mm-210mm only. You are not paying that for lens only.

  • Dammit. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than $781 delivered.

  • I just bought one from the website. It gave me free shipping (didn't have to do anything) to Melbourne CBD location.
I wonder if the shipping free because it is above a certain price.

  • +2

This is a great buy imho. I just sold my Nikon D800 and replaced it with this for an overseas trip back in October. Image quality is nowhere near as good as the D800, but it's 90% of what the D800 is. At this price it'd be stupid not to. Take it overseas with you and claim the 10% TRS and you're laughing.

  • Yep, good find OP. I was fortunate enough to pick the two lens kit from JB last week for $635 but that deal is over so this is the best price around at the moment. Great little camera. I also have a Nikon D7000 and the pics so far from the 6000 with the SEL50F18 50mm f/1.8 are very comparable to those with the Nikon and the 35mm f/1.8 in a much smaller package. If it goes to plan, I may well ditch my Nikon gear.

I don't think the 16-50 is all that bad for its size. That's the point - it's super compact. Great for a kickabout in a small package lens. All the reviews ice read say the same. I think its a keeper.

    • +3

What was the $635 deal from? Why u no post :(

  • JB Hifi had 15% off the cameras and it was selling at the same price with mix and match. ( camera body, 16-55 lens with bonus 55-210)
Bigeizz might have got 5% extra code only valid for Wednesday.

Current deal is also a great deal for this awesome camera. One of the best APS-C mirrorless camera in the market.

    • +1

Yep, spot on, Gaggy. It was complicated in the end. I went to a JB in Sydney CBD in my lunch hour and asked if it was both lenses an whether they had stock. The guy said yes to both but I didn't have time to hang around, so I went back after work.

A different guy this time told me that it was only the body plus the 55-210 and that JB had updated the website to reflect this, so I walked out. For the hell of it, I went across the mall to the other JB and the guy didn't get the memo and did the two lens deal. This was 7:30 at night so no point giving others the heads up an hour before closing. I was just lucky.

The other bonus is the $30 voucher in the box. As per another post, it can be used multiple times. I used it to buy $130 worth of stuff for $40. Can't complain.

      • Most of the staff members dont know, but I think with mix and match, if you ask them to scan the three items in their little scanner, it comes out to this price.
Which items you bought, I do have a $30 gift card from Sony.

        • +1

Bought the Sony alpha remote, pair of 3d glasses for our Sony telly, 3000mAh power bank and a USB stick. Had to buy the USB stick to get over the min $31 threshold.

        • @bigrizz: Ta. Will see if I can get anything. I was checking the SD cards and they were expensive even with the code.

      • How is this lens pack different to the mix n match offer at JB?

Are 16-55 and 16-50 different lenses?
Do we still get the $30 voucher with this offer at Camerahouse?

        Ta

      • What did you get from the sony store? Nothing seems to be worth buying?

  • Thanks OP. Just bought one for my dad as a Xmas pressy. The price of this bundle is just insane cos it beats overseas price!

    • True. this price beats even the black friday prices from US and grey imports which are rip offs for mirrorless. You get local warranty plys extra lens.

  • Does anyone know if this is valid with the bonus lens from Sony? I know the lens comes in this kit but you could end up with two zoom lenses?
Unsure of the product bundle code of this package. Awesome deal!

    • +1

No, I am sure the extra lens is the bonus lens. Sony does not sell the kit lenses anymore. You have to purchase lens extra.

    • -1

Of course this is valid with the bonus lens offer from Sony, so of course you will end up with two zoom lenses - the Camera House link quite clearly says "16-50mm & 55-210mm" - so yes, that equals TWO ZOOM LENSES…

      • I don't think that's the case here.

        • I don't think that's the case here.

I don't understand. Why wouldn't you get the two zoom lenses (16-50 & 55-210) they are advertising ?!?
(the 55-210 is a bonus offer provided by Sony - so why would they advertise it and then not deliver?)

Edit : If Gaggy is right about Silvion's question, ignore my comment Orpheus. Seems I may have made the fatal mistake of assuming someone might read a few lines explaining how the bonus worked, as per comments below - hehehe

      • Good luck. No where in the deal it says that. They are bundling the two lenses for that price.

        • +1

That is what I am saying; two lenses…

They are able to provide the good pricing because the 55-210 is a bonus offer provided by Sony.

The 16-50 and the 55-210 equals two zoom lenses - I don't understand what the confusion is ?!?

        • @oz-dave: I am not missing anything Silvion is expecting the bonus lens with existing lens shown in the deal.

        • +1

          @Gaggy:

Silvion originally said "but you could end up with two zoom lenses?"

          I still don't get it?
He WILL get the bonus 55-210mm unless I am missing something?
The 55-210 bonus lens is provided by Sony and delivered at point of sale by the retailer, so Silvion will get his α6000 Camera + 16-50mm Lens + 55-210mm Bonus Lens = TWO zoom lenses total

The fact they are offering this with the 16-50mm lens almost certainly means they are selling the ILCE6000LB package + bonus lens.
The only way he would miss out on the bonus lens is if the retailer doesn't have stock - but it would be pretty stupid for Camera House to advertise something they don't have stock of - but it certainly wouldn't be a first on OzBargain ;-)

        • @oz-dave: True. We both are saying the same thing. But initial words of his post interpreted that one 55-210 is included in the kit and sony bonus will come separate.

        • @Gaggy:

Umm ok, fair enough - so you reckon when Silvion said "you could end up with TWO zoom lenses" he/she actually meant THREE ???

No wonder I didn't get it, if that is the case LOL

        • @oz-dave: Yup.

        • @Gaggy:

I can't understand why someone would be asking if the retailer would give them two bonus lenses instead of one :p

So, Ok then - forgive my ignorance - hahahaha

Edit : So if you are right, I am starting to think I was in error assuming someone would read how the bonus worked - I actually thought Silvion might be asking if he/she would get the bonus for sure, because quite a few people on here have complained that physical stores didn't have stock of the bonus and they would effectively miss out if they went ahead and purchased.

        • @oz-dave:

          Sorry to confuse all.
I was asking if the package deal of the A6000+15-55+75-200 was open to the bonus provide by Sony to receive another 75-200mm. But after checking with the Sony website, i believe the bundle above is not included as Gaggy confirm at the beginning.
          Sorry for causing confusion!

  • +1

I owned 55-210 lens from NEX 5N and though I agree I didn't use it that often, but whenever I went out, I used it. It is worth the extra lens( remember it is free). It does not take that long to change a lens.

So if you are spending $399 retail price for the lens, then it might not be worth it. Prices like $199 or free with camera, it is a good zoom lens to have. Next everyday use lens is 18-200mm and it retails for around 900-$1200 based on model. Spending that much money is too much.

I think most of us would be either upgrading from point and shoot or previous gen or NEX, taking it as a first mirror less camera or second camera for a professional.

  • As far as i knew, it was an instant redemption of that bonus deal in store.

    • +1

It is auslagger - Bonus is available as an instant redemption at point of purchase through a Sony Australia authorised dealer, subject to stock availability…

It says so on the Sony website :-)

    • Dont worry. Misread.

      • Edit : No need for comment ;-)
(and damn, someone negged you quick sol3x)

  • Both lenses are great as a starting point for learning. After a few weeks or months, sell them and invest in a couple of prime lenses.
I currently use a 20mm f1.8 and the 50mm f1.8, both amazing and sharp and much better in low light than the kit lens which is f3.5

Definitely something to look into for anyone buying this series of cameras

  • G'day Guys
I really want to buy one of these kits, anyone know where i can get it for a similar(ish) price ?
    Cheers,
    Bogrolls

      • Wow thanks very much I didn't think to look there (as dumb as that sounds). I spent 30 minutes looking online and couldn't find a price anywhere near it, then came back saw your response and bought it straight away.

      • Link no longer works. So I guess the deal is over then?

    • Try in JB Hifi and ask one of the person to check the price for mix and match for : A6000 body, 16-50mm lens, 55-210 mm lens, it will come out to $678.30 if the 15% sale on camera is still on.

      • Thanks Gaggy, I will give that a go.

        • +1

Good luck mate. Most of the JBHiFi staff is over confident with little knowledge. Ask them to put in their devide and confirm the price for the package.

  • I bought it this morning however I got a processing error during checkout. The payment has been deducted from my credit card account. Tried to call and email but all went to my local store. Just wondering if anyone here know what is the contact details of the main office?

*I noticed that they have increased the price to $799. I hope they will still honour my purchase.

    Gday All,

Just a quick one to say I got a call from the shop today (i did click and collect) and it's ready in store to pick up.

    Thanks again!
    Bogrolls

  • Just picked mine up today from the store.
Thanks for sharing. We noticed that there was a "Free $200 Print Voucher with any puchase of a camera over $250".

So we collected that aswell which made an awesome bargain! Hopefully others get that deal to.

  • i just bought the same package (A6000 with 16-50mm & 55-210mm lens) from DigiDirect Melbourne city store for $714.00
I went to Michaels Melbourne store, and best price they gave me was $714, but only 2 display stock left. I didn't want display stock. I went to Ted's (2 stores down) and they couldn't price match, they quoted me $919 with 32GB SD card & 5-year warranty - what a joke, over $200 more. I finally when down to DigiDirect (3 stores down) and they priced this at $718, but sold it to me for $714. Brand new and all sealed boxes. From what I can tell it's Sony Australia stock, there is also gift card inside to the value of $30 for sony.com.au store. I'm a happy customer!
