Motorola Nexus 6 SmartPhone 32GB Midnight Blue $766 in Stock Amazon France RRP $884 GPS

1370

2 reasons why I'm posting this deal:

1) Cheaper than AU Google Playstore and the farce we had today with barely any units in stock.
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_6_32_GB_…

http://ausdroid.net/2014/12/11/nexus-6-launch-australia-tale…

Playstore price is $869 + $15 standard postage = $884

2) In stock and ready to ship in time for Christmas if you get express post.

Once you put it in your cart VAT is removed = 499.17 EU + shipping
Standard shipping = 15.13 EU for estimated delivery date 24th-30th December
Express Shipping = 35.22 EU for estimated delivery date 16th-18th December

= 514.30 EU w/standard post = ~$766.14 - save $118 over Playstore
= 534.39 EU w/express post = ~$796.10 - save $88 over Playstore

*Prices quoted are with 28 Degrees MC with no currency conversion fees

But most importantly its in stock!!! This is the international version so will be the same version as the one from the local playstore with all that 700MHz 4G+ goodness. If the release from the US was any indication, the AU release is going to be marred by slow trickles of stock every Wednesday when it sells out within a couple of minutes.

Supposed to be sold at local JB Hi-Fi's as well, but the ones that I/others/Ausdroid have attempted to contact know nothing about the device. When it does eventually come, it'll probably be at Playstore prices and be limited to 1-2/major stores like the Moto 360. Also unclear whether they'll be sold unlocked or on contract with Telstra.

As a comparison, other grey importers like Kogan are getting stock January 5th - $859 + post (essentially Playstore price). Handtec/Clove December shipments are all sold out and with the sliding AU$ is $820+ with shipping.

Pros of Amazon vs. Playstore
- In stock now & can be delivered before Christmas
- Significantly cheaper ($120)
- Same 24 month warranty! (confirmed)
- Free returns within 30 days as per Amazon vs. 14 days of GPS
- Great Amazon service - warranty return is covered by Amazon

Cons of Amazon vs. Playstore
- Need EU plug adaptor for turbocharger

Update 13/12/14: Credit to Matt Clifford from WP who has confirmed 2 year warranty and free return postage with a free replacement as well before sending your faulty unit back - essentially the same as GPS.

Just spoke to both Amazon France and Germany via live chat and Google Translate. (Worked surprisingly well!)

Both have a 2 year warranty and can offer a replacement before sending the faulty item back. Return postage is definitely >on Amazon Germany and I believe the same with France although the rough translation made my question hard to understand >for him.

Also for this interested in the 64gb model from France, the shipping is over 40 Euros and that is an error and will be >fixed! (You're welcome) it should be 15 Euros like the 32gb model and they had the wrong weight on there so I was >informed it will be fixed within an hour or so. Both Germany and France now have the same price for shipping so can order >from both and see which ships first.

My CC has just been deducted today - Thanks to the recovering AU$ it was just $766 total for standard post! (~$120 off GPS/RRP). Some people have also already received tracking from Amazon France. Hope everybody gets theirs soon! :)

For those tossing up 32GB vs 64GB, the 32GB version has ~24-25GB user available storage. While there is no mSD expansion card slot, you can still expand the storage via a $1 OTG msD adaptor or dual OTG msD/USB memory stick. For me, 25GB is enough for all my apps, docs, pics, music and the odd movie. For Titanium backup, nandroid images and other media, you can plug in something like the above as required. I stream most of my media through a networked HDD which has saved a lot of space. While its not as convenient as onboard storage, +$60 for an extra 32GB is a substantial cost if you don't need the storage on a daily basis.

The obvious comparison is with the Note 4 which has arguably a marginally better screen (smaller but latest gen), camera, expandable storage and exchangeable battery.

But if you're a tech geek and know what the Nexus program is about, you'll cast those minor cons aside for pure unadulterated Android without the influences of TouchWiz. However, if you want simplicity and things to work out of the box, then the Note 4 might be better. You need to root/install custom ROMs/kernels to enable the LED notification light, double tap to wake and adjust the screen colour saturation for example.

3+ years of Android OS updates, custom ROM/kernel and developer support on XDA is in my opinion priceless and warrants the premium over the Note 4 which could have been had for ~$720 during the 20% Ebay sale recently. In 2-3 years time if you decide to hang onto the phone for that long, it'd still be a useable device running the latest version of android, whereas the Note 4 would have been long abandoned by Samsung.

YMMV.

Enjoy!

  • Hmmm someone's a hater going by those last few paragraphs…

    • +1

Being critical based on inference alone might make him/her a hater, but this is a common observation of how Samsung operates its Android offerings. This puts the Nexus phones much more in line with the update experience which iOS users enjoy, one of the final lynchpins of the iOS ecosystem which has yet to be overcome by Google, and this is a very good way of going about marking a difference.

      • I agree, the Nexus line is a great choice for those who want the simplistic approach of an iPhone without being locked down to itunes. No argument there. My personal opinion which matters to nobody else other than me of course is that Samsung has an overall higher build quality in my (limited) experience (owned a One, S, 4 and 7 gen 1 & 2) but hopefully this is a thing of the past due to Google not making manufacturers cut so many corners by limiting the RRP so low. My main gripe though is of course the non-removable battery or expandable memory.

Also please note that he has significantly changed his post since I commented. Original is here.

+1 both for the deal and the detailed description. Not at all interested in picking this phone up but enjoyed the read.

    • +7

Thanks :) Longtime commenter - about time I shared something back! :)

      • +1

I love how enthusiastic you are lol

    • Ditto!

Been waiting on my Lollipop OTA update on a Nexus 4. Found out recently Telstra are blocking OTA updates. I am on Boost which is also impacted. Put a mate's Amaysim SIM in, instant update available.

Prior to mate's SIM, couldn't even get the update without a SIM installed over WiFi.

Telstra networks clearly not suitable for one of the benefits Nexus devices offer.

    • Hmm thats annoying. Guess the only way around that is to flash the update manually via your computer or install a custom ROM.

      • +1

Or grab a mate's SIM once you know of the problem :-).

Thanks for the great detailed post

        • I did this yesterday with my Nexus 5. I am on telechoice and Telstra was blocking the update. Put my expired optus sim in and it got the update before it had even finished booting.

        • @jimmej:

          I guess that's why my Nexus 5 isn't updating…

          Why is Telstra blocking it?

    • +2

Finally got 4.4 for my S4 (outright from OW) about a month ago, speedy update, my phone reboots randomly as a new feature.

      • +1

Mine also did that for few days after the update. The OS itself is power hungry than Jellybean, now I am charging my phone twice a day :(

        • Have you managed to fix it? Apparently a factory reset works. Mine reboots even when it's charging.

        • @krisspy: I didn't do anything, it fixed itself. But the battery drain is still a problem. I am not sure if factory reset will fix that. I am too lazy to backup all the data and do a factory reset and reinstall all the applications :)

      • -1

        What's OW?

          Officeworks

        • -3

I didn't know they sold Android updates.

    • You sir are a legend - have been hanging out for OTA
Got it on Nex & - why not on 4?
Now who do I know with a sim

  • +10

I was hoping google would continue to push the boundaries of how good a phone could be in the sub-$500 range, rather then compete up in the flagship range. So nexus 6 is right out for me. However, as noted, this is a good write up, and looks to be the best deal for this phone right now.

    • +2

I was really hoping for the renewal on Nexus 5. :(
Though that being said, Nexus 6 looks really good too. I am with what you said pretty much.

    • Yeah.. still hoping they would come out with a cheaper phone. All that was required was better (battery + 3gb Ram may be) in nexus 5.

    • I think OnePlus has taken up that challenge.

    • They would be undercutting the moto x if they did that

  • +4

LG G3 seems to be much better value….sorry…

    • +6

      I forgive you

    • +4

Depends on what you're after: 5.5" vs 6", Nexus device vs LG proprietary. Its a bit like comparing apples to oranges.

No one buys a phone for an investment. Its a pleasure device. I like my updates and custom ROMs/mods and want a huge screen thus for me its worth it.

If you want a bang for buck phablet go for the <$350 Sony Xperia Z Ultra (6.4"), or normal sized phone then the Moto G for $200 odd is pretty hard to beat.

This deal brings it inline with the Note 4 and I'd pay a $50 premium (vs $720 Ebay deal) for the aforementioned software perks.

      YMMV.

    • If only the G3 had an s805 soc. I know the korean version does, but I believe the frequencies are no good here?

I got a lumia 1320 for a phablet experience, I am enjoying the phone, despite it being windows and being low spec.

      • +1

actually the frequencies work here. I think what you mean is the 5G frequency doesnt work here. However, our networks dont support 5G yet, and it will work just fine on 4G and 3G. i know cause i researched this, was thinking about getting this phone. if only it was a little cheaper i would get it..

        • I've seen second hand ones cheaper?

Most of those second hand ones usually were "just out of the boxes" ones. Though with the recent change in law, I am not too sure with G3 Cat.6.

Because of the government being an idiot in Korea, the telecommunication companies control the phone market as well. So it's hard to find phones with decent price when you look at outright phones.

So people tried to avoid this by doing the following:

          1. Get phones that are heavily subsidised by the telecom companies with plans (This is usually done to get higher market share).
          2. Stay with the telecom companies till you can get off the plan.
          3. Sell the phone so that you can recover the investment and profit from it.

Though with the new law introduced, I heard that this became incredibly hard, so I am not too sure, but I know that buying phones outright is ridiculously expensive in Korea.

      • +1

The Cat.6 version does, but not the original G3.

They basically released a variation of G3 in Korea that supports newer LTE technology.

I've heard that they were not planning on releasing it globally for 3 months, but I think it has been more than 3 months since they released in Korea, so… I don't know.

EDIT: I am not replying to the comment directly above, but replying to Ronnnie's comment.

  • +6

Rather buy a OnePlus One tbh, i know a lot of people say QC errors and stuff but the new batches are pretty damn good

    • +4

Pros and Cons for both for sure. Up to you to decide whether the premium is worth it:
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/nexus-6-vs-o…

I've been following OPO from the beginning and they've put me off ever buying one with their marketing and attitudes.

      • same here, if they shipped to Australia, I will have one in my hand now. Too much trouble to use forwarder or buy overseas as it end up not much cheaper than branded phones like LG G3.

    • +3

I got a OnePlus One direct few months ago. Regret it as issues started and no such thing as support from them! So much for a warranty. Might as well just throw $450 down the toilet.

      • +1

I'll give you $5 for it, then you're only throwing $445 down the drain :)
My OPO has been a beast with no issues at all.

        • That there's a good bargain.

  • +3

I don't understand why any company other than Samsung have not introduced a stylus to their phones in the 5"+ size. I would love this phone or the LG G3 or the Sony Xperia or the ipho… oh no, not the iphone. Anywho, no stylus = no deal for me.

    • +1

Yeah I agree I don't understand that either. Too bad Samsung uses TW.

    • Samsung has shares in Wacom?

  • Great post, just ordered one and chose the express shipping :)

  • +1

    It aint 64GB no dice!

  • +6

I dont get it, The whole appeal of the nexus range was the awesome price of the device - that wasn't as speccy as the competition, but had vanella android and great support…with the price bump they really sold out their early supporters :(

    • +1

Perhaps it'll be like the gnex, start out pricey, but 6 months down the track be a bargain! One can hope. :)

    • +1

Only the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 were at good prices.

The others were as pricey as the flagships of the time.

"Early supporters" were used to paying a lot for a Nexus.

      • +2

Nexus S was very good value too. The only expensive one that springs to my mind was the Galaxy Nexus.

    • +2

For the Nexus 4 and 5, maybe, but earlier than that the phones weren't priced so aggressively. So not quite 'the whole appeal', I think. It still has vanilla Android and great support, after all, so it's not like their value is completely diminished.

      • +1

Yes only the LG Nexus has "awesome price". I commented on it when Nexus 6 was first announced. Both Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus were $700+ when they first released.

        • I think it might be because LG has less of market power than both Samsung and HTC. I know that LG wanted to make the Nexus 5 to be named Nexus G like Galaxy Nexus, which Google refused. So it might be LG not having enough power in these negotiations (which for us is good).

    • I owned every Nexus including the Nexus One since 2010. Sad to say but after the price increase - no more.

  • +2

"In 2-3 years time if you decide to hang onto the phone for that long, it'd still be a useable device running the latest version of android, whereas the Note 4 would have been long abandoned by Samsung."

…but not by XDA you mentioned earlier. I'm still using my old Samsung Galaxy i9000 (the very first one) with Android 4.4.4 on it, god bless XDA developers :)

  • +2

I had no idea Google started selling premium phones.

  • -6

my oneplus one is half the price and it makes me twice as happy

  • +1

Nexus 4 is where google peaked. $249 for a top spec phone.

    • +5

I'd put the peak at the Nexus 5. Paid $326 after TRS.

      • I'd still say nexus 4 as hardware improvements weren't too great for the cosbidering the time after release. Had similar processor, graphics and the same 2gigs of ram. Thing the nexus 5 had going for it was the non glass back making it a bit more durable but the nexus 4 specs for its time and price point were unbeatable. Hence the 700+ like deal for nexus 4 on OzBargain.

        • Bigger screen, full HD resolution, faster CPU, thinner and lighter. I can compare them every day since my wife has the N4. With the fragile glass back hers always is in a case, mine is naked, that increases the difference in size and weight a fair bit. Also, the $249 was the 8GB version, $299 for 16GB, plus shipping, so actually $319. And a major pain to get a proper tax invoice for TRS…

    • N4 was top spec on paper, it was junk in reality. N5 same LG rubbish camera and battery life. N6? made by motorola, hooray!
but dont ever do a software 'upgrade' from the shipped os, new 'features' of unreliable power hogs are google staples

Thank You Very Much for a Superb posting with SUPERB Info & Analysis.

    Best Regards,
    George

    • For a moment I confused George with Google and thought OMG Google is on OZB :)

  • +2

Still too expensive at this price either wait for Z3 to come down in price else buy a G3 or add a bit more money for note 4

    Otherwise get one plus one.

All the above are the better alternatives

  • Initially I was gonna get the Nexus 6 but the wait was just way too long. My phone had died and I needed a replacement immediately. Seriously, it was announced in mid October and only now it's released? That's over 6 weeks long, killing any hype. I opted for the Note 4 instead and have been loving it.

    • Good choice, the Note range are excellent. I don't understand all this TW hate tbh either, initially yes the extra apps installed bloated the old phones slowing them a bit but there's no way you could consider a Note 3 bloated. It runs as smooth as butter and is extremely well built. I'm using the Google Now launcher and as much as I'd like a new Note 4 I can't justify it as my Note 3 is still awesome.

    • 1 for the detailed description.
  • Nice description. I'd like to know OP's view on Z3 vs Nexus 6 - apart from the software difference.

    • I think both phones appeal to different markets.

People who want a 5.2" phone probably don't want a 6" one and vice versa.

      Pros of Z3 vs N6
      Cheaper
      Better battery, camera, expandable memory
Easier to handle - at the cost of screen size

      Cons of Z3 vs N6
      -Way less custom ROM development
-Custom development hampered by the Z3's locked bootloader and DRM keys. Unlocking it (required even for root to my understanding) makes you loose those DRM keys, meaning worse camera and display (no sharpening)
      - Smaller screen
      - Android updates way better on the N6 - faster and guaranteed for longer

Its a bit too much like apples and oranges imo…Comparisons vs a Note 4, XZU, Huawei Mate7 etc are more valid

Essentially you'd only want a N6 if you want
      a) a huge screen
      b) vanilla android with guaranteed fast updates and tons of custom ROMs
      c) flagship specs

If you don't care for in particular a) and b) then there's very little reason not to get a Note 4/other phablets.

  • +1 for the description.

  • Custom ROM/kernel and developer support on XDA for the Samsung flagships is just as good as it is for Nexus devices

    • +1

That's what I was thinking, half of the OP's argument for Nex 6 applies to many other phones out there, LG G3 and Note 4 have a lot of custom ROM/Kernal support.

      • +1

They never work as well due to proprietary code and drivers which never gets released. Thus you always end up with something that has poor reception (propietary modem), imaging and battery life with bugs which never get squashed.

It's like trying to jam a circle into a square. It works but never quite as well as stock. No such issues with a nexus device.

I could go on…Samsung has Knox which can be tripped with minimal modding and voids warranty, Sony with Drm keys which when you unlock the bootloader for root screws the camera, audio quality and screen… I can go on.

        • Ah Ok, but as far as I know my LG G3 is easy to modify and no proprietary code that I know of (or if it does, it is still open for easy customization), the modem, camera and display drivers for example are open for use to be implemented and easily customized for new Roms as is evident by several Rom's I've tried.

        • @TRANCE:
I own a G3 as well. Most of the "custom ROMs" are just modded versions of the stock LG firmware. If you flash an AOSP version (which has no Optimus UI) like CM12, Liquid Smooth etc, you'll notice the difference. The camera, battery life and reception is nowhere near as good and will never be.

  • Yeah you can't compare a custom rom to official suppport

  • Says 1 to 2 months wait now for amazon france, and germany says not in stock =(

  • No one has properly discussed frequencies supported. I highly doubt it will support the new 700mhz 4G frequency coming out very soon. Bit of an issue when buying a phone from overseas I guess..

  • Mine arrived yesterday evening. Hope everyone who ordered gets their's soon :)

  • fyi:

    JBHiFi have stock (most stores)

Google Play has also started shipping (despite 5th Jan Shipping date)!

  • Ordered yesterday 64gb model on Amazon France with Express shipment. Total amount was EUR 592.76 = AUD 916.08 (as per bank statement). Shipped same day with UPS. Scheduled Delivery: Monday, 05/01/2015, By End of Day Last Location: Departed - Koeln, Germany, Tuesday, 30/12/2014. 20 EUR could be saved with slower postage. Considering product stock is available looks like a best option, even if price is almost the same as on Kogan and Yatango.
