Recommend professional possum removalist

Has anyone used a professional possum removalist that they can recommend? What was the cost, and did it come with a 12 month warranty?

A friend has had a quote that claims 6 entry/exit points to seal up and removal of the possum(s), and also some rat treatment, for around $500 plus $150 for the rat treatment.

Does this seem reasonable?

Many thanks.

i had a possum removed from my house, guy told me their protected species and all he could do is moved it down the road, came back like 2 days later.

    • Thanks for your reply.

Didn't he plug the holes as part of the service?

      Isn't a 12 month warranty standard?

      What was the cost?

nah, house was quite old. Holes everywhere (we were renting), was charged i believe $50 for the relocation. Eventually moved out, horrible horrible times there haha.

  • See where the possum is getting in. In my case, going up into the ceiling and see where the sun shines in. Once it gets dark, the possum goes out for dinner. Get up,on the roof with something heavy like bricks or roof tiles and coVer up all he holes so it/they can't get back in.

Meanwhile, at the supermarket buy the blue square waxy looking rat poison say about 4 packs and wearing gloves so the rats can't smell your hands on the packet, throw them around all over. Keep that up for as long as it takes to get rid of them. Rats are smart and will take a few days to take the bait. After about 1-2 weeks if you do these things carefully and methodically (as our PM) says, it will all be fixed. Otherwise, pay the poison guy and make sure to get him back in the warranty period to lay more rat bait - 30 days or so for rats.

  • i'm pretty sure they can only be relocated to somewhere very close by, so chances are they are going to find their way back.

they can get through very narrow spaces (i've had one which sleeps in a wall cavity)

  • Ratsak is cheap

  • The pest man who did my ceiling for rats used the blue square waxy blocks and recommended those form Coles or Wiilies. That's what I use. There is no point in moving the possums if the entry points are not fixed IMMEDIATLY. They are territorial and will come home.

    • the problem is if you just shut them out then they will probably die without another place to go to

  • The OP's friend obviously called a pest guy because the possums are a problem and they couldn't solve it themselves. All the half arsed suggestions are just that and don't answer the original question. 6 entry points would suggest a long standing possum problem with at least one family living in the roof. This means several visits to get them all, plus the work involved in sealing the holes properly. Depending on the state, they might need to instal a possum box on the property as well. Same goes for the rats. They have most likely been there a long time and would be well established. A four pack of Talon from Woolies isn't going to solve that problem. Like all work required around the home, if they aren't happy with the price, get another quote, or do it yourself. Unfortunately a DIY possum removal/proofing job is most likely to fail miserably and then they will still have to pay.

Actually all of the things I suggested were done by me and they all worked. The rat poison has kept my roof clear after a one year hell of rats. So don't tell me it is half arsed, the expert did it, I followed up and continue to do so. It works. As I said, it what the experts uses and recommended.

Same with the possum it still runs OVER the roof, not in it. No reason why 6 holes can't be handled by the home owner.

Sure easy to suggest another quote, bleeding obvious really.

      • No. First off you called in an expert…then followed up on his work. But when it comes to the OP. You reckon it's easy peasy and to DIY. The work done at your place wasn't half arsed because an expert carried it out. Your suggestion that the OP can do it themselves is half arsed and should be ignored.

What's to stop someone killing a possum on their own property, wrapping it in a black garbage bag and disposing of the remains at a nondescript location?

Law & Order: Possum Victims Unit

  • If you shut them out, they will find another place to go, especially if you put up a possum box that's actually designed to attract them by its appropriate design.

  • Most possum boxes I have looked in have bird nests in them.

    All sorted for my friend.

The quote above was bogus. The guy never even turned up to examine the house.

My friend got another quote on Boxing Day.

    • The contractor turned up and climbed on the roof and did the circuit looking for holes.
    • He found a large hole in the front that was accessible by the lower roof covering a bay window.
    • He plugged the hole with a steel sheet.
    • He took a tile out and installed a one way door
    • He left some apple slices inside and outside the one way door.

The possum made a huge racket that night and there was some intermittent noise the next days. The contractor came back two days later but my friend wasn't sure the possum was gone, even though the apple was gone. So the contractor left a slice inside the one way door.

The contractor came back after the New Year and the apple slice was still there. My friend hasn't heard any noise since the first two days the one way door was installed.

Cost: $250 including 12 month warranty.

    • What company was this?

That guy sounds good and reasonable and successful, doesn't get any better than that.
