Uber fare help

Hey guys just used uber in melbourne for the first time after having used it quite a bit in America which I just got home from. I was charged $59 and traveled 11km and 35mins. Is this a bit outrageous? I travelled more than 15km and about 40 mins in us and only charged around $30. Very upset as I definitely would not have used this had I known it would cost an arm and a leg.

Cheers

The app shows you the fare estimate. The $59 charge was probably during surge rates, which you must agree to before the booking can proceed.

  • How do you find the fare estimate without actually booking one? Also nothing about surge charges, nothing came up at all

    • From the main screen tap the little car icon under UberX/UberBlack, from there you can enter your destination and the fare estimate will be displayed. Alternatively, set your pickup location first and above 'Request uberX Now' you will see 'Fare Estimate'.

Attach a screenshot of your email receipts, is there no mention of surge charge in there?

You booked an UberBlack on that trip. That's a premium service with a higher rate. Your cheaper trip must have been through UberX which is Uber's standard service.

        • @DETHANAUT:

My god can't believe it, why would the first option automatically be on that, didn't even look at it. Absolutely spewing

You might have noticed the price of gas here too is outrageous. How much did you tip your Melbourne driver ?

    • +2

Zero, did enough tipping in the us!

  • Had you chosen Uberx instead of UberBlack, it would have been around $20ish fee.

    • I don't think so. A 15kms odd trip costs me around $40 here in Sydney. So I'm guessing 11km would be around $30 mark

      • Its not just distance, time is a factor as well

        • Yup.. takes me about 35 mins for that trip.

  • Damn Sydney uber black prices are crazy high

Based on your receipt, I'm assuming you did return(by accident?) fare, or were tricked and paid a return fare.

The link belows shows the journmey as 10km and $31 for Uber Black.

    • That's for an estimated 17 mins travel time. OP's travel time was 35 mins and 11.65kms. So the fare looks right.

Edit: under fare breakdown, charge for distance is $23 but charge for time is $27.. So it's because of the time taken

      • I got it, getting time and distance mixed up.

Havent tried uber black, did some research its essentially hire car service.

I dont know about now, but back when i use to work over time all the time and got cab charges home, my regular trusty cabbies, put me onto a hire car service - their way of subverting the taxi mafia, was essentially charge the same as a taxi fare with the luxury of a "limo"… just a fancy car

Emailed them explaining the situation and why on earth the premium would be the automatic option so they've given me $10 credit, really helpful…

  • I had used the free $25 in sydney, Said the fare was going to be $38, Thought sweet cheap trip then was stung $28 on top of the free $25…

    Good first impression!

    • Double check your receipt

Mine was pretty spot on, despite the fact that I had to stop for 5mins to throw up…

Normally this would cost me around $90… thats based on 2-3 years ago too…
