Hi all,

First deal so hoping you can get some value out of this. Let me know if I've made any errors.

I asked GearBest for a coupon for the MeegoPad T01 and they gave me one for my readers so I thought I'd share it here for those who love a bargain. Cheapest I can find on AliExpress is $99.60.

How would this device perform in this situation:

First - use with a monitor to configure the network and install uTorrent and a remote VNC host app eg. Splashtop or LogMIn.
Attach an external USB hard drive as the storage for uTorrent.

Then operate headless (without a monitor).
Control it remotely via a VNC client.
Use uTorrent's remote control feature to add and control torrents.
*** could the Meegapid handle uTorrent with up to ~50 simultaneous download torrents??

Do you think it could run iTunes? Then you have an Apple TV without the limitations.

    • A lot of people use Apple TV for AirPlay, you cant do that with iTunes alone as far as I know. Also, you can find the Apple TV at a lower price than this already.

With that said, this product can do a lot of useful things and is a great deal.

      • xbmc and airplay tho…

  • Anyone else thinking that you could make some sort of DIY laptop with with thing? Let me think…

*broken laptop bought cheap to use as shell
    *Meegopad T01
×USB Hub(s), with additional SD Card reader attachment

Any ideas on how this could be done, and powered?

  • Compared to an 8" tablet with same CPU & RAM:
    - You save $30
    - You get 2 more USB ports
    - You lose the screen
    - You lose the battery

If using it as a video player, I personally prefer the convenience of the tablet. Can sit on the couch and set it up without all the wires and sore back from sitting on the floor in front of the TV.

Not sure what chairs/lounge you have but I find it much more comfortable watching on the TV in my recliner.

  • Buyer beware:
This uses a budget wifi part (Realtek RTL8723BS) that likely won't be good enough for HD streaming (which is its purpose you'd think). See here for a test of its ability, turns out v poor.

Going on Lon Seidmans review, this doesn't come with an active Windows 8 install.

Instead of Windows 8.1 with Bing, which would of been freely activated, it comes with a 30 day trial of Windows 8 so you will need to fork out for a valid licence which would cost more than the hardware itself.

Not such a cheap stick afterall unless the manufacturer gets onboard Windows 8.1 with Bing.

      • glad I passed for now….. keeping my eye on both the meegopad and pipo x7….

        • I'd ordered the meegopad before i found out about the licence. I've since cancelled that order and ordered the pipo x7 instead, as it sounds legit.

  • This would be great to install a google chrome remote. Presto! Mouse and Keyboard controlling from your phone!

I've started a paypal claim for 'item not as described' as the activation server blocks the product key used. (Error code 0xC004C003)
I'm now having to deal with gearbest who will refund me provided I send the item back but why should I pay for return shipping? This is effectively a counterfeit copy of Windows.

    • In a similar boat as yourself. Very tempted to raise a paypal dispute but Im still pushing for a legit key as item is not as described.

Here is the response I got to my ticket:

      Dear Peter,

Thanks for your message and inquiry.

      Please check http://www.maximumpc.com/reminder_windows_81_preview_license….
You can install one Windows 8 in your place , is it ok?
If you need one, you can pay intel company 22usd and get Windows 8.

      Have a nice day!
      Best Regards
      Nydia

I'd like to know where to get the key for $22 though :)

      • Your support person at least understands the issue. I got…

        • I got that a few times at first as well. Currently I have a modified version of the windows 8 executable in my inbox (of course yahoo wont let me download because it detects it as a virus….) They are trying to get me to install the cracked version .. Updated again requesting a product key in text format. Lets wait for the next stunning response. Hows the paypal claim progressing?
