    [Membership Required] NSW

    Why only NSW ???

I think everyone in Victoria is already a member…

  • I've been a member for 12 months now (got free membership with the Amex deal). I cannot see any reason to renew my membership. Cheaper prices can be had at Woolies/Coles if you wait for sales or play the Woolies code game.

Agave and Chia seed are the only two things I buy that are consistently cheaper. But not worth the $55-$60 membership.

Pro tip. If you do find value in your Costco membership and intend to renew allow your membership to lapse and take up a new membership on the day you need to do a shop. And be sure to take up the membership on the 1st of the month, it gives you an extra 30 days(13 months total).

      • Also if you are 'dissatisfied' with your membership:

On Membership: We will refund your membership fee in full at any time if you are dissatisfied.

Just keep in mind it may need continual membership to maintain the lifetime warranty on stuff since purchase records are tied to your account or something like that in case you buy a TV or something.

Personally I agree with knackers don't think it's worth it either, since the majority of the items are usually the same prices oz-bargainers would stock up on stuff when discounted at supermarkets. But someone else in my household insist on it and pays for it so whatever.

While those prices are available at Costco all the time, you also have to buy in huge quantities where you end up with a trolly over $100 just for a few items. Great if you need that much, but I doubt many people actually do.

Also their range is fairly limited to conservative products only, like chocolate and vanilla flavors, only one spiciness level of nados sauce and so on.

a household of 3+ is generally sufficient to make it worth it or if you struggle to find time to look for and stock up on all the short term sales done by other retailers like woolies coles or aldi.. a one or two person family it would only be worth it if you were buying a lot of electrical items.. eg. then the warranty side is the best in Australia (currently assuming it is not abused) particularly given the poor state of affairs with how manufacturers currently handle warranty procedures and how dodgy extended warranties are, particularly those offered by the so called "big" retailers such as harvey abnormal, the bad guys, dick h smith, officedoesnotworks etc.

          @paulojr:

I agree with the warranty part. Technically it's not even a warranty, it's a 'if you don't like the thing for any reason if it's perfectly good we'll refund you whenever'.

The thing I find dodgy about it though is you have to maintain membership to keep that option. And when I pressed the floor manager (I assume, they pointed me to her when I asked about warranties) that's the only option she recited to me.

As for the value preposition, I'm sure many people find it worth it. I was just stating in my opinion, when I live a decent drive away from a Costco, and most of the purchases going to waste because we get sick of eating tons of the one thing we decided to buy on a craving then in my case it's not really worth it. We do buy like 4+ cases of eggs every visit though because extended family wants them so there's that.

And I was pretty tempted on that $400 xbox, though I probably wouldn't use it much :p That would have been worth a years membership by itself.

        • @natsumezoku:

Yeh I think the continous membership is an insurance "probably" thing. e.g. if you don't extend your membership your probably the kind of person that would use the policy more often than other people, hence adding the exclusion protects them from too many claims. Not sure but that's the only reason I can see for the condition. For me $60 a year is ok for piece of mind, particularly given the hell I've been given by retailers like the bad guys and harvey for just trying to get clearly faulty items fixed.

I had a good laugh recently when I returned a brother multifunction printer, after brother told me $3 a page in printing costs due to a diberate nightly cleaning cycle that used up the ink was normal and they would refuse warranty.. I had the last laugh when I took it back to costco and got my money back and then told brother it was now their problem not mine! ;)

Not sure if costco would ever change the way the work to make the grocey side more of a value proposition. I'm not even sure how to given them feedback.. website is shocking and the phone number seems to divert all over the place. They aren't very contactable basically.

        • @paulojr:

For me the issue was 'Oh I have 2 months of membership left. I want to buy something that normally has a warranty of at least 2 years. If I buy it, I'll have to renew my membership or else I'll only get 2 months worth.'

And based on the fact that I mentioned I don't think the membership is worth it you can see how that left a bad taste in my mouth. :p

But yeah, it has it's ups and downs.

If I lived closer to a Costco, the cheap pizza and hotdogs alone would be worth it :) And I don't think you even need a membership for that if you were sneaky about it.

I'm sure people are smart enough to make the decision for themselves if Costco membership is right for them. I'm just adding some food for thought.
