Bought a tub of Chocolate Honey Nougat last night. Was just gonna have half…. Gawd. Ridiculously good at that price

  • I'm happy with my 4l tub of neapolitan from Colworth's for about $4.20

Excellent price. I hope the IGA supermarkets in WA are not closing down left, right and centre like they are here in Sydney. In my area there have been 3 or 4 IGAs close down in the space of around a year.

Yea, local supermarkets are getting hammered by the colesworth. iGA has initiated a price match campaign though to try to stay competitive, so it's good to shop there just to help sustain competition or else it's just the big 2 running the show.

      • One has to ask? Why weren't IGA matching prices previously? I can only assume they were not getting the same prices from distributors or they wanted larger margins on their products.

I think I'm going to make myself look like a crazy person for posting this but here goes nothing. Has anyone noticed that the texture or consistancy of Connoisseur has changed of recent? I think the last time Woolworths had it at half price was when I first came across this. I bought 6 tubs and 3 flavours and they have sat in my freezer over the course of a month. The difference in firmness was quite noticable and I felt little resistance when serving using an ice cream scoop. Once served it turns to a liquid-y state of melting very quickly. I know it is summer but that shouldn't affect how it is coming out of the freezer. I have since bought some of the similar Aldi variety that I get when Connoisseur isn't on sale and found that it froze firm and served firm before melting slowly.

One of the appeals of Connoisseur is that it is a denser thicker ice cream than you often find in the 2L-3L tub brands. Previously I have had to leave it out of the freezer for a minute or two before attempting to serve it from the tub as it is so dense and firm and needs to warm slightly.

I have checked my freezer and nothing else seems less frozen and I have tried turning down the temperature in there. Despite this the ice cream is so unfreezed that you can feel it squish slightly if you squeeze the side of the container. Meanwhile Aldi's premium-sorta ice cream remains as firm as it as it ever was when kept in the same freezer.

Your first problem is that you are using an ice cream scoop to serve it. Everyone knows you are supposed to just grab a spoon and eat directly from the tub and then say "oh crap I am almost done. oh well I might as well finish it off" :-)

Your issue above could be how it was transported. If it landed in Woolworths and sat on the dock and started melting, then was put in the freezer and re-froze, it does affect quality of the ice cream and it seems to end up being more "icy" than smooth.

      • Thanks for replying. I feel like this is different to the issue that occurs when ice cream melts and then refreezes. In that circumstance ice cream can still become firm again but its got that icy texture and appearence. In this case it is like the ice cream is unable to freeze.

However I can't be sure that perhaps if left to melt initially and then refrozen at the store that Connoisseur has a different reaction than other ice cream and that maybe I have just not observed this before.

        • Here is my detailed assessment since I'm a Connoisseur err… connoisseur. :P

          1. Have you considered where the Connoisseur is placed in your freezer. Since it is a 1L container it might fit in the door of your freezer, whereas the 2L-3L tub cant. This means that everytime you open the freezer door, the Connoisseur is more susceptible to temperature changes, whereas the 2L-3L tub sits on the shelf in a deeper and more colder area (less temperature variations).

          2. Ice cream container: Connoisseur is a 1L container so it has a higher surface area (more contact with warm air) compared to a 2L container. This means that if you take both containers out at the same time, the connoisuer will melt faster.
An example will be boiling eggs. A small egg will cook quicker than a big egg, due to its larger surface area (the shell more contact with water).

          3. Is the seal on your freezer intact? Highly unlikely reason, but if it is not, means things closer to the door will not be as cold as things deeper inside.

          4. Ice cream quality. Connoisuer is deemed high quality because it uses a good amount of cream (thats why it taste so damn good!). The cheaper supermarket brands tend to have water or milk as one of its first few ingredients (to cut costs). I find the cheaper ones tend to take longer to defrost, due to the higher water content.

It is highly unlikely due to ice cream being out for a long period of time. I have accidentally left a tub of connoisuer in my car overnight previously (it rolled out of the shopping bag). When I discovered it the next morning, I quickly put it into the freezer. When I opened it later, it had a more icy texture. it's ok to eat (I'm still alive), but certainly not good enough to give to other ppl to eat (tasted more like a cheap ice cream and takes alot longer to melt).

          TLDR: Connoisuer is good!

Edit: Just tasted it and it is good. I better go buy another one to compare :P

        • @mmd:

Thanks for your reply and thoughts. I should have replied to this earlier but must have been in a mood and didn't.

          1. I place it at the back where I always keep it and where it has previously set firm.

          2. I only eat the 1L cylinder types of ice cream so I don't believe it's the contrast between experiences with 2L and 1L varieties that is getting me

          3. Good question but I believe it is. Fridge is a Samsung that was purchased last year and otherwise no other food appears to be affected or less frosty than it usually is.

          4. Similar to 2, I don't eat the lower quality supermarket brands. My rule of thumb for how firm the ice cream should be comes from my previous connoisuer purchases.

Hopefully just a quirky batch somehow. Fingers crossed for the next time the deal comes up and that the supermarket I visit has all or most flavours to choose from.

  • Does this applies to iga xpress?

    • Not available at IGA xpress stores.
Plenty of normal IGAs to choose from tho.
