Top Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones - Sony MDR-1RBTMK2 $246.84 Delivered @ NanoByte Solutions

70

Long time commenter, first time poster.

This being my first deal, I will start by making a couple of bold statements that I happen to believe to be true and think I can get away with, followed by the details fellow OzBargainers may find useful:

1) This is the best price for these anywhere in the world at this point in time (they have recently sold used on local ebay for more than this).

2) These are the best Bluetooth headphones you can get at this price. Period.

Link to these on Sony's site.
Link to an Australian review.

Are these audiophile quality headphones? No, but neither are any other Bluetooth cans, at any price.

Are they exceptional value at this price? Absolutely.

A quick list of features:

  • 30-hour battery life
  • Integrated S-Master Amp (audiophiles will know what this means)
  • AptX
  • NFC
  • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE)
  • High Resolution Audio capability (needs an external DAC via USB)
  • Playback controls

They are also arguably the most comfortable full-size Bluetooth headphones on the market today.

Keep in mind that the break-in period is quite long - from a few weeks to a couple of month of normal listening, depending on your daily usage. They also come with a cord, so can be used passively.

For optimum quality, I always recommend to control the volume from the headphones, while having the source (e.g. phone) volume at the max.

Spotify, GPMAA and the like sound very nice on these, but to really appreciate the sound quality, throw some well-recorded FLAC/ALAC material at them - just make sure the headphone is in the AptX mode (hold Vol+ while turning them on - the blue light will then blink 3 times) and that your device supports it.

If they have an Achilles' hill, it's the mic's sensitivity - people at the other end of the phone have a hard time hearing me. Not surprising, really, considering the mic's position.

I bought these cans from the same seller a couple of month ago for a slightly higher price when the Aussie dollar was stronger than it is now, which makes this an even better deal.

This is obviously a grey import but, unlike Kogan, these guys actually list a physical office address in Melbourne. I don't think the pickup is available, but given that the delivery is free this is hardly an issue, unless you want these as a Christmas present.

The email and phone are operated out of an Indian call centre, which I have found to be very helpful and overall had a great experience with the purchase so can definitely recommend.

Mine was delivered with a courier in two days flat (even though they quoted 3-5 days), but I was lucky that they had 1 in local stock at the time.

The prices tend to fluctuate but is correct at the time of posting.

  • 3 times more expensive than that Air-Fi Matrix 2 deal recently. I'd hope these have great sound for that price difference.

    • The Matrix are great for the price, but are not in the same league as these.

  • Pretty bold statement indeed… Though I doubt I can find better price in Australia.

    • Not just in Australia - they cost more on Amazon etc, even before taking into account the exchange rate and shipping costs.

:P I know places back in my place that had them for approx $200 AUD, that is slightly off topic and doesn't really matter since it's not available in Australia. The only reason that I bought this up was because you said it was the best price in the world.

Though, yeah, it's a good solid price, really really good price.

  • These have noise cancelling?

    • No active noise cancelling. The passive noise cancelling is decent though, unless you have very large ears.

  • Alwyas a good idea to put the head-fi review in http://www.head-fi.org/products/sony-mdr1rbt-premium-bluetoo… looks like positive but only a few reviews so far I would recommend looking though the forum there for more info

    • +1

Yes, these are mostly good, but keep in mind that the head-fi reviewers most likely would have paid considerably more than this.

  • I've been after a pair of these for a while

I don't know what the lowest price has been. All I found were around $280-300

I used to have a pair of MDR-1r. I didn't know it takes that long to break in and sold them.

    Thanks OP
I bought a pair for $265($12 for delivery) via PayPal to Melbourne Metro area

  • hi guys/ elektron,

may i ask if nanobyte solution is still the cheapest site to get these? I've been after these for a while as well but missed out on the last sale as well..

  • Nanobyte currently have them for $265.91 with free shipping.

i-tech.com.au are $10 cheaper and have a $14 shipping fee, but you can pick up for free if you're in NSW. I have never dealt with i-tech so can't comment on whether they are legit or the customer service. Make sure you are getting the right item, as their vendor code doesn't have the MK2 reference in it (although the product description does).

You can check price comparison sites like staticice.com.au and shopbot.com.au.
