The Garmin Forerunner 220 Heart Rate Monitor measures essential running data like distance, pace and heart rate. It’s like having a coach on hand, providing constant feedback and recording all your stats so you can focus on your run. In addition to using GPS to calculate distance and pace, it has a built-in accelerometer. This allows it to capture distance and pace data when you’re running on an indoor track or treadmill, with no need for a separate foot pod accessory. The accelerometer can also track distance when GPS is unavailable, such as when you run through a tunnel.

Auto Pause: With the Auto Pause feature on, the 220 automatically pauses when you pause your run (at an intersection for example) and starts again when you start your run
Workouts: Design your workout or get a free training plan on Garmin Connect then load it on to your 220 for real-time coaching on pace, time and distance
Personal Records: 220 keeps you motivated by letting you know when you’ve achieved a personal record from the mile to the marathon
Colour Display: 220 features a high-resolution colour display putting essential features at your fingertips and in vivid colours for quicker comprehension

  • How's this watch for say Parkruns?

    • +3

It would be perfect. The Garmin 220, and the flagship 620 are the gold standard of running watches in their respective price brackets. DCrainmaker is a great review site to see if it's suitable for your specific needs.

Note, for those who have Amart All sports nearby, they will match and beat this price by 10%. They are owned by the same company.

  • This may be a silly question but it's been several years since I owned such a watch, do these still require a chest strap or are they accurately getting the heart rate from the wrist band / watch now?

Summer workouts and a sweaty chest strap used to be annoying.

The 220 still needs a chest strap. Optical HRMs as a technology are coming along, expect decent ones in the next generation of watches/devices in Q1/Q2 next year.

      • Nice, thanks for the tip. I'll wait it out as I don't "need" one for a few more months anyway!

  • They still use the chest strap, the chest straps are vital now, as they measure a lot more, ie vertical oscillation and also ground contact time. (Not that I care for these)

Considering this or a 610 for a little cheaper… Choices choices

    • +2

610 cheaper? Any info would be great, have been after superseded 410 or 610 for a while but rebel still want full retail despite new models being out for 12 months

  • Tempting offer…

  • Does Amart Allsports have a price match policy?

    • They have a price beat (10% off competitors price). Couldn't find it on their website, but it's here: http://www.royalrandwick.com.au/Stores/AMart-Sport

    • yeah, i bought the Garmin Vivosmart at Amart a couple days ago for $135 as JB hifi had them for $150. Retail price is $199. They had a sign up that they would beat by 10%, so I asked and got it.

    • They do its the wait/hold message if you call them! They tried to only match when i went instore caus ethey had to make sure the local rebel had stock to price beat. I pointed out its a tv advertised special i cpuld buy online in gront of them so it doesnt matter if local store has no stock i can get it at the advertised price.

Tl;dr they'll price match but you may have to push depending on staff

  • I'm thinking of grabbing one of these as its a good price but it can be had for under $300 without too much effort so don't impulse buy it based on rebels 30% off marketing.

    • I remember when the 220 and 620 just came out, Rebel and Amart one weekend had a 30% off all HR watches.. I could've had a Forerunner 620 for $350 or so.. unfortunately it was still out of my price range.

  • If I hadn't just bought one of these second hand on ebay, I would be tempted. Ozbargain level: scrouge.
