COTD (www.catchoftheday.com.au) are having an ASUS laptop sale tomorrow - the prices are usually quite good.

What do you want to do with your laptop? - you can sum it up into two categories :

General : Surfing the Web, Email, Documents, and Collection / Printing Photos
Games : Games or High End Photo Manipulation

I'm guessing you will want a general laptop, so the next thing to consider is the screen & hard disk size.

15'4" is a good size so that the laptop is not too big, and 250gb should be more than enough for general activities

The processor should be a dual core, or even better core 2 duo - but this the biggest impact on price.

How much are you looking to spend?

  • I saw that Catch of the Day, who've had a few popular bargains on this site, is announcing their "Asus $1 million mega netbook sale" starting tomorrow midday (Thursday 15/10/2009). I'm not sure if a netbook is quite what you had in mind but I think 10" netbooks are becoming quite 'normal' nowadays and their performance is really quite fine, especially for just email and internet, however the DVD drive is perhaps the main thing lacking. For me personally I picked up the Asus 1002H with a host of features and a chicklet keyboard when cotd had it for $499. I suspect it could be part of their sale tomorrow, and hopefully they also have some larger non-netbook models with dvd drive.

Alternatively, or if you need something more urgerntly, you could always check out a computer shop like MSY or Fluidtek who are known for their low prices. This one for $429 may also be okay: http://www.itestate.com.au/pages/product/pdt_product_detail.….

  • yep we need a general I have just started using photoshop elements and our pervious puter was very slow in saying that it was 8yrs old other than that no gaming my kids are 7yr and 4yrs so we have a few games nothing serious… as for $$ I was thinking anywhere from $600 to $800ish not really sure I haven't looked into them til today ..
I def want a dvd so a netbooks not what I want but I will have a browse of the site anyway
    Thanks Nat :)

    • Well you can always get a $40 external DVD-ROM (which is what I have). Or if you're willing to try salvage the DVD out of your desktop, you can turn it into an external DVD with something like this - however you will need AC power when you want to use it.

There's also links to at least two other bargains in that thread that would easily suit your purpose! ;)

If you can hold out for a month you are much more likely to get a good deal - by monitoring the oz bargain site :).

Your probably looking at the $800-1000 range if you don' want a net book, or around $700-900 as a bargain / special. If I see anything I'll post it up for you.

If you really need one now, StewBalls's link should do the trick.

  • Check out http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Notebooks%20Wiki

Assuming you need a general unit the Lenovo G550 is hard to beat in terms of bang for buck. http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=g550+lenovo…

  • Great thanks for those sites I didn't know about staticice still checking it out… I'm looking at these at the moment /ACER-EXTENSA-5635Z- and ACER EMACHINE 725 VISTA HOME PREMIUM

I'm just wondering if there will be better deals over the next few weeks when windows 7 comes out?? What do you reckon?

Aren't those Acer's Desktops rather than Laptops? When it comes to laptops I think you will find that Lenovo generally have a better built quality than Acer.

A new desktop would probably be the cheapest if you chose to keep the monitor from your old unit. Some ideas here http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs

There is a current 25% off selected Lenovo Laptops here http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/landing_pages/promos/2009/affili…
however I doubt you will get much under the $685 for the G550 as listed in my first post.

"When it comes to laptops I think you will find that Lenovo generally have a better built quality than Acer."

        Huh, based on what?

My direct current experience with Lenovo is limited, but whilst mine is so far positive, my buddies that work for DET (who now use Lenovo exclusively) tell me to avoid them like the plague! WTF??? My direct experience with Acer is not limited however, and I can assure you they're fine!!! ;)

The moral to the story, there's too much FUD about brands circulating without substance!

  • Oh I didn't know that about Lenovo I have never heard of it before since I have heard of Acer a bit I figured it would have been the better prod..
No we def need a laptop will sell our monitor so no probs there…

  • +1 for Lenovo over Acer for a comparable spec laptop.

    • Six of one, half a dozen of the other IME! Go for the best price for those specs, neither will disappoint! ;)

  • Thanks for all the help guys I found an
    ACER 15.4"
    320gb hhd
    4gb ram
    2.1GHZ pentium dual core processor
    windows 7
for $768.. so I went with it I was getting sick of searching to be honest….
Thanks agin for all the help
    Nat :)

  • Recently bought a Lenova GE550 from MSY in Sydney for $539. Definately the cheapest and best price. Even dell works out to be more expensive than that.
