Recomend a Childrens Bicycle

Hi, I have a 5yr old and want to get her a first real bike. She is about 115cm tall, and has a bike but want something to help her starting riding properly. I have no bitumen near me so it will have to put up with gravel road and driveway. I live in SE suburbs of Melbourne.

Where is a good spot to start? Any recommended brands. I bought a Giant MB 10 years ago and it was ok. Hope to spend less than $300 but i want to get something that is nice to ride. I have a younger daughter so it might get handed down.

Thanks.

If you want a name/expensive bike go to a bike store and the store will get your daughter to try a few and see what's best.
But I suggest just because of the age is go to toys r us and try ones there. They will have all types already built and are cheap and good enough quality to last ages.

  • I just bought my 5 year old a bike from Kmart. $70. It will 2 years and then she will out grow it.

  • If you want a decent bike go to a bike shop, they will fit your daughter properly. If you want something cheap because she will grow out of it quickly go to Kmart etc.

I am a keen cyclist and I was having a drink with my cycling buddies just before XMas. The guy that owns the Local Bike Shop was there and he said that in the week lead up to XMas he had heaps of parents coming in because they had bought cheap $70 bikes from KMart but either had trouble assembling them or the poor quality control meant there was some part or another that didnt fit or was poorly adjusted etc. They came to his shop asking for help to put them together as the KMart staff aren't bicycle mechanics.

He said he told each of them it would cost $100 for him to put the bikes together, most were upset as they said they had only paid $70 for the thing in the 1st place and didnt want to pay another $100 for help to assemble it. His point was that his bikes were maybe $50 more to buy but had been put together professionally by qualified mechanics and that he would stand by them if something went wrong. If he fixed a cheap bike that he hadn't sold he got nothing out of it beyond the potential legal liability if something broke and some lawyer pointed at his mechanical skills putting the thing together.

I just threw out 3 kids KMart bikes in a hard rubbish collection, kids had outgrown them. The little one my youngest used to ride with training wheels as a toddler (he is 13 now) felt like it weighed more than the road bike that I ride as a MAMIL!

In terms of brands it seems all the big bike brands also do little kids bikes as well. I wasnt into cycling back when my kids were small but if I was buying a kids bike now I would find it seriously cool to see a little kids on a miniature Trek or Specialized etc If it was only a few bucks more than a 'Bob the Builder' bike then i would definitely go for the Branded bike. If for no other reason than I would know it was made or at least supported by a serious bike company that knew bikes rather than just another stock item from a warehouse.
