Moving Houses, Is It Worth Getting New ADSL or Just Using Mobile Phone Hotspot?

I am moving out to a new rental with my g/f,

is it worth purchasing a new ADSL connection , or just increasing my mobile spend to a 10GB data plan and using a mobile hotspot for my internet?

pros/cons ?

Depends on how much data you guys need per month…we found it better to get a new ADSL 2+ internet connection since we were getting a lot more data compared to a 3G/4G mobile hotspot!

  • most ADSL connection locks you in a contract. Are you ready to pay the cxl fee should you have to move out of your rental place prior to the contract expiry ?

    No Contract Required ?

Sure there are cheaper…you could always change providers i guess :)

$100/m 200gb incl phone line. no install charges apparently. no contract

Too expensive for ADSL, maybe OK for cable….

    2 main questions

    1. How much data do you use a month?
    2. Do you plan use the landline much?

Here is a list of month-by-month (contract free) plans

Well you haven't really given us any information about your usage patterns and how much you intend to use and what the various costs are.

Just go for what is cheapest.

That said, a line will generally always be faster than 3G. If you have 4G coverage, you might get closer to what you can with a line.

  • TPG does unlimited ADSL for $60/month including line rental. 10GB on Optus mobile broadband is also $60/month. TPG's setup is ~$150. I think TPG has a 6 month minimum contract. Personally I'd go the home rental, as I have an Xbox one which annoyingly requires 1gb+ updates every few days (it feels like at least). 10GB is really only enough if you only browse and hardly download anything/watch streaming media.

But yeah, more information will help the forum answer your question :)

  • thanks for the replies so far -

    some answers:

Current situation, $60/mo Telstra mobile plan , 1GB included (iPhone5)
Girlfriend is $35/mo mobile plan with 2.3GB included

current home ADSL at my mum's is $50/mo , usage around 50GB month. (unlimited plan… some months I use up to 80GB)

Telstra landline rental at my Mum's is $35~ month

Do you plan use the landline much? No not at all, don't care if there is no landline in new place.

I guess just looking at my usage, there is probably no way I could get away with a mobile data plan , unless its some 4G dongle bundle with a mobile plan

still unsure which way to go. maybe Naked ADSL unlimited and just get the g/f to pay half

    • If you are living together, then you will need to account doubling your quota (if you use 80GB a month, then cosider a 200GB plan to account for both your usage.)

      My two suggestions are
TPG Naked DSL 200GB plan $59 a month
      http://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Providers/TPG/Naked-D…

6 month contract. $129 setup fee. BYO modem.
      100GB peak and 100GB offpeak.

      OR

      Alternatively: MyNetFone's 200GB plan, $49.95 per month
      http://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Providers/MyNetFone/N…

      100GB Peak, 100GB offpeak.

Min. Total Cost: $248.95 for first month

      If contract length is…
Monthly (no contract) the setup fee is $200
If 12 months the setup fee is $100
If 24 months the setup fee is free.

      BYO modem.

  • Hey Eckorock,

I work for an ISP and am happy to help you out.

PM me and I'll explain the different paths you can take.

My personal opinion about Naked DSL is to stay away. Unfortunately, when you go on Naked DSL you are generally forced to waive Customer Service Guarantee (CSG). This basically means that if a third party fault (i.e. faulty landline) the ISP can legally take as long as they want to fix the problem. This is how companies like TPG get their prices so low (its good to always read the small print).

We supplied Naked DSL for about 6months, and had several issues. I personally had Naked DSL and had problems as well. On the other hand, I have had friends who have been on Naked DSL with no dramas whatsoever.

Point that I am making is Naked DSL is a luck of the draw. It's generally cheaper, but not by much (depending on port availability).

The other factor you need to consider is if Naked DSL is even available at that location (another thing I can help you with when you PM).

There is a lot to consider, and it makes it very hard to give accurate advice with limited information.

  • I just noticed a lot people talking being locked into contracts when getting an ADSL line installed… This is true however I move every 12 months where Internode are super awesome and just restart the contact on my move. Given this I don't see why other ISP's also wouldn't do the same.

    • Most other ISP's charge less than $80/month for unlimited ADSL(2+ if available) with line rental, I don't see why Internode wouldn't do the same.
I pay total $60 a month for unlimited 100mbps fibre (TPG FTTB), Internode's ADSL2+ is exactly twice the price for 1.2TB, and NBN 100mbps is $165

      • Its quite simple really… Internode isnt a budget ISP. You get what you pay for, excellent customer service, not that you need it, flat out speed all the time, andof course a warm fuzzy feeling that keeps you going back.

Now this certainly is off topic…

i can now see all the replies about never having issues with cheaper ISP's and to that i say… good for you

  • the other factor is that because I'm on a 12-month lease, I (probably) shouldn't sign up for any 24 month offering
